HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN Is Brilliantly CONFUSING *reaction/commentary*

The way you were treating Harry like a murderous fiend for blowing up his aunt while simultaneously stanning Sirius Black, the alleged mass murderer 😭😭

One of the best parts in the book is Harry telling Vernon that he has a convicted murderer as a godfather and that Serius would be writing to see how Harry is doing and if he's happy.

Snape shielding the kids when he sees the werewolf is my favorite emo boy moment.

Here's some important information that wasn't revealed in the movie (only the book) but is important for the next ones: Remus Lupin, Sirius Black, Peter Pettigrew and James Potter were the ones who made the Marauder's Map when they were students. Sirius, Peter and James are unregistered animagi, meaning they can turn into animals (Sirius - dog; Peter - rat; James - stag). Remus is Moony (because werewolf), Sirius is Padfoot, Peter is Wormtail and James is Prongs (alluding to a stag's antlers, that's originally why Harry thought the stag patronus was his father's). This is important to know because some of them will be called by these nicknames later on. Anyway, keep enjoying the series, I love your reactions! :)

The potion Snape references as Lupin transforms is a Wolfsbane potion. Essentially what it does is allow him to transform with his mind intact. But because he didn't take it this time, he has no idea who any of them are.

Fun Fact: the triple decker was custom built and REALLY slow (because it's super heavy) so the way they filmed it was let's say the triple decker was going max 10 MPH, the other cars and buses went 5 MPH (and then they sped it up in post production) and they only filmed on like one road because the triple decker couldn't go under bridges or anything, so yeah. :)

The Dementors are attracted to messed up people with dark and/or trauma in their lives. This makes them excellent guards for a prison full of deranged killers and dark wizards, but it also means they target people who are depressed, or experienced messed up things.

Omg no it would not be iconic if Hermione saved Harry. They already took SO much away from Ron and other characters to give to Hermione (who is my favorite character btw). One of the best Ron scenes in the book was him standing on his broken leg to step between Harry and a presumed mass murder, claiming Sirius would have to kill him first to get to Harry. But alas, they gave it to Hermione in the movie 😪

The scene where Lupin expresses disappointment in Harry for recklessly putting himself in danger is meant to be a direct contrast to Snape threatening and being scary. The books make it crystal clear. Snape doesn't manage to make Harry see the consequences of his actions or to make him feel remorseful. But one speech from Lupin made him does manage to achieve that result.

In case you're curious: the reason Aunt Marge blew up is because it's a side effect of saying the Silencing charm incorrectly.

You commented on the mood and style changing from the previous two and while the story from the books does get darker when the characters (and audiences) age, I think the big change between this one and the previous two films is the director. The first two films were directed by Chris Columbus who is known to have directed the Home Alone films. The first two Harry Potters share the fast paced children’s adventure mood and style. Columbus did remain as one of the producers for the third film but it was directed by Alfonso Cuaron. He did not take part in any of the other films. The director for the fourth film was Mike Newell, who again did not take part in any of the other films. The final four were directed by David Yates and to me as a viewer the four latter films have a similar style and feeling to one another where as the two middle ones feel a bit mis-matched in a way as they stand apart stylistically. I still like them very much but they are quite different from both the first two and final four films, so I do believe it’s much due to the changing directors.

The immense editing needed on HP movies is why most reactors split each one into at least 2 parts. Harry and friends never murdered anyone. The first movie has Harry killing Quirrell but in the book Harry just kept him in pain hoping help would arrive in time but he passed out just as Dumbledore arrived. Voldemort killed Quirrell by leaving his body and leaving him so weakened from possession and burns that he died.

I heard that dementors are meant to be some kind of physical embodiment of depression. If that is the case, I think they did an absolutely incredible job with their design in this movie

Dumbledore was recast because the original actor sadly passed away.

This is my favourite film in the Harry Potter franchise, I love Lupin I feel so bad at the scene when he transforms into a werewolf it looks so painful 😢poor man.

Funny you should mention how Harry should use the fact that his godfather is dangerous to his advantage, because that’s exactly what he does in the books 😂 Whenever his aunt and uncle would try to mistreat him or deny him something, Harry would mention “Oh, I need to finish my letter to my godfather, who’s an alleged mass murderer on the run,” and the Dursleys would change their tune. It’s hilarious. Also, Sirius Black is the one that signs the permission form so Harry can go on trips at the end of the book.

I love the casting of Gary Oldman as Sirius Black. He plays the character so damn well. David Thewlis was fantastic as Remus Lupin, as well.

So this is to explain the names Marauders Map. This is explained in the book, but the movie didn’t explain it. Moony= Werewolf = Remus Lupin Wormtail= Rat Animegus = Peter Pettigrew Paddfoot= Dog Animegus = Sirius (which means dog star) Black Prongs= Stag Animegus = James Potter (So in a way Harry’s dad did save him.) Remus became a Werewolf before he went Hogwarts. His friends became Animegus so he wouldn’t be alone during the full moon.

Makes me sad seeing snape because the man who played him passed away, very sad

First time I heard this book was on an Audiobook CD...I put it in my CD-rom drive and laid in bed with my eyes closed, and of course soon was fast asleep. I woke up later, slowly, and began listening, and it seemed so strange and disjointed, some parts repeated and some flung in out of nowhere...then I realized that I'd had my media player set for shuffle/repeat the whole time.

The woman that plays the fat lady in this movie is married to the guy that voices the shrunken head on the Knight Bus.

The problem with the old "forge the signature" plan, is that you have to commit to it, or not. You can't be requested it, claim that it's not signed, and by extension, couldn't possibly be signed in any realistic time....only to have Harry turn up, now signed. Knowing this difference was the key to a professional ;)

Sirius is supposed to be about 33 years old in the book, but it always made more sense to me that Harry's "elders" should be older than that, including his parents. Like, at the end of the last year, Harry would be only about 3 years younger than they were. Gary Oldman was about 46 here. We are more accostumed to adults (from the perspective of a young teen) to look older than 30, so I prefer the casting decision for all of those involved (Lily, James, Sirius, Lupin and Snape).

A lot of people do consider this the best movie. Not necessarily the best book, but every book after the third book was way longer so they had to cut out a lot more for the movies.
