Girl, the law is: after you finish the How to Train Your Dragon trilogy, you have to react to Kung Fu Panda trilogy, and if you had reacted the trilogy Kung Fu Panda first, you would have to watch How to Train Your Dragon soon after. P.S: I don't know if you've watched Kung Fu Panda, if so, amazing. If not, it will be a trilogy that much worth watching.

BTW, there are a few cartoon series that take place between the first movie and the second. They're not necessary to understand the films, just some world building and character development. The first is Riders of Berk, the second is Defenders of Berk, and the third is Race to the Edge.

when this movie go out on DVD and i had bought it, i watched it so many times, one of the times i took pictures all the way through just to get pictures of Toothless when he smiled or was adorable! AND STILL IS!!!!! SO ADORABLE!!!!!

Notice how in the 'kill the dragon' scene, the Nightmare ran around the top of the arena trying to find an exit first, before noticing Hiccup and getting ready to fight. Their first instinct even then was to flee, rather than kill.

I love how we all agree the dragons are cute and amazing and humans are gross and suck and are icky

I love so much about this film. I love how the kids just automatically respect competence, like they turn on a dime. [I also have to point out that while the kids are initially mean because kids are mean (until the see his competence and turn, which I love), the adults are "mean" to hiccup because they want to keep him *alive*. HE IS VERY, VERY SMALL.] I love every uncertain or awkward look that Stoick gives when trying to converse with Hiccup, that Hiccup doesn't see or understand. I adore Hiccup's sarcasm. I LOVE how for the most part, engineering solves exponentially more problems than violence. I love that Toothless is really a big cat. Love the pacing. The First Flight is WONDERFUL in every still and every dramatic twist. Toothless forcing Hiccup to do a dance around his art was the promo that made me watch the film in the the first place. I love Fishlegs and his D&D stats. I LOVE Astrid and her dragon ride, the point where she waves her arms in the air and smiles like the young kid she really is, for the first time in the film. I love that everyone's personal skill becomes relevant in the end. I love the Stoick and Gobber friendship. I love that Astrid is taller than Hiccup. I love her pep talk and that it works. I love that Hiccup's ending state is exactly reflective of Toothless. I love how broken Stoick looks when he walks out of the room after insta-regretting saying "I have no son," and I love love LOVE the look on Stoick's face when he watches his son in the air on dragonback for the very first time-all their feelings are so clear even despite the roughness of their culture. I quite like the roughness of their culture; it's very honest (this is related to how the kids just automatically respect competence without holding old grudges) (Not to imply the War on Dragons is not "grudges," but it's a key plot point. Otherwise they are very in the moment people, at least in this film.) I love how Toothless SAVES STOICK RIGHT BACK. ("Pretty Woman" reference. I know I'm old so I'm providing citations. :D) Again, actions are immediately rewarded in the moment without wasting precious time on grudges. Toothless actually cringes away from Stoick before he realized Stoick is helping, but then accepts it wholeheartedly. I love the fully supportive reaction of the entire village at the last battle. I love the French dub!! Many translations don't capture the original spirit, this one did (even though they changed Hiccup's name, grrr) I love how GOOD these people really are even with flaws and while still struggling to understand. I love that Hiccup is a lefty, and they don't forget this in later installments!! (Nor do they forget his little chin scar throughout the franchise, that is REAL CARE and pride in their work!) Relatedly I love how the sleeve of Hiccup's shirt snags for a literal *instant* on the Monstrous Nightmare when he introduces it to Snotlout. They didn't have to put that in there but it's such a tiny, realistic thing, and the film is FULL of that stuff. I love how the soundtrack cures my bad dreams, and I love how the author of the book adored and hyped this film even though it was a completely different story. So very much heart and understanding was put into this production. I am a grown @$$ woman and I have repeat watched this specific film more than any other.

I just realized, when Hiccup said he was the first Viking who wouldn’t kill a dragon, I thought about the second movie

You GOTTA watch the sequels, this is one of the few truly perfect trilogies out there

You right Rebecca, I saw the 3 movies in IMAX and it was a fricking experience, every fight, flight and background scene was a delight to the eyes, specially the 3rd one with the color pallet and the background foreshadowing.

When I first watched this in theaters many years ago, I audibly gasped at the scene of Toothless diving into the flames after Hiccup. It was an incredible moment to see!

This movie is still the most amazing 3D experience I've ever seen in a theater. They took on severe limitations, with the number of characters available in any scene, in order to prioritize the 3D effects. But those flying scenes were worth it. And the ash falling after the final battle honestly got me to raise a hand, as if to brush it away, before I remembered I was sitting in a closed environment.

Ever watch a zookeeper actually talk about animals? It's usually some variation of: "[x] are dicks" or "[y] are the most savage thing ever and you will get wounds" or "[z] emits an horrible smell that you can't get rid of for weeks." Yeah realistically, befriending dragons would be much like trying to befriend great cats or polar bears. They probably will just pounce on you because they can. Except rhinos, apparently rhinos are just giant labrador retrievers.

Whenever I watch this trilogy, I always bring out the tissues because I cry quite a bit more than normal.

I can't wait to see how you enjoy the rest of the series

I also recommend the HtTYD Christmas special. It's a sweet segue, very Gift of the Magi, and shows Hiccup in a phase where he's still learning to use/frustrated with his new leg, which doesn't happen again (he gets very competent fairly quickly).

14:30 Well... Hiccup did say at the start that his village has stubbornness issues and thats why they never left. This movie is so good with foreshadowing and parralels its insane Also its pretty reasonable for Stoic to hate dragons with a passion, they keep raiding his town and they caused the death of his wife 19:29 Hiccup refusing to try and stop helping toothless even if it means drowning himself speaks volumes to his character

People who think Toothless is like a dog must have never owned a cat 😂 That dragon is a cat, plain and simple! Hiccup even uses the Jason Galaxy "Da Vinci" technique to befriend feral cats (you put your hand out, one finger slightly raised, look away and wait for the cat to approach)

This movie looks so stunning because the studio brought on Academy award winning cinematographer Roger Deakins as Director of Photography

This, Megamind, and Shrek are my favorite animated DreamWorks movies.

Chris Sanders actually did see Toothless looking at the bird to mean he realized the bird had what he lost!

If it makes you feel any better I was chatting with an animator that worked on one of the How to Train Your Dragon films and he didn't know any of the characters names, he was just like, "oh I'm animating the fat kid" or "Do you mean the black dragon or the white dragon?" just stuff like that, it was really funny.

Just in case you're wondering, fans of this movie didn't have to wait however long for the sequel. Just like The Incredibles, we didn't think there was gonna ever be a sequel until it was first teased.

The blacksmith Gobber is one of the funnier characters just because he's played by Craig Ferguson, very funny comedian and was probably the last good late night host before he retired. Can't wait to see you react to 2 and 3 the entire series is fantastic
