In this excerpt from the S03 episode in New Orleans of The Life-Sized City, Mikael meets Harry Shearer to hear about how the flooding in the city in was man-made and caused by shoddy engineering by the US Army Corps of Engineers more than the hurricane itself.

Part of my family has lived in the area for over 100 years. Tens of BILLIONS of dollars of federal aid have been spent on these levies and flood mitigation since the 1950's. Begs the question: where did all that money go???

Cities around the world could handle floods a lot better if they took some flood engineering tips from the Dutch.

At that time, I was active duty in the army, stationed in Germany, for the "war on terrorists", while my unit knew i couldn't afford flights, yet wouldn't let me go tdy to another unit to help with relief. I should've known then. There was still sand on hwy 90 from it when I got to drive it in 2007

Why you dont build below sea level. This goes for any beach city or town. Imagine if it was a small beach town with 3k-5k ppl....they would all ne dead.

Of course better anti-flooding system would be great, but if you are basically gambling don't be all of the sudden surprised you lost. It is not a question of "if" just "when".
