Here we view it as a chance for education, of a chance for young people to get some experience before going off to be real adult, a carrier for those who have the skill and disiplin, but most importantly most people in our society has done fist time service (In 2016 draft was extended to women, before that we volenteered). We all have a connection to both the military and civilian population. Plus the gun culture here is very healthy as a result.
