Hey Nathan, Since it's cold and snowing how's that cab working out for you. Lol. Haven't heard you say anything about it in awhile and thought I'd ribbed you a bit. Thanks for sharing. 🇺🇸
Wow....that mantle timber is stunning. Pure artistry created by nature. Who ever ends up with that over their fireplace is going to be one lucky person. I can picture it mounted, with an antique clock, some family photos, and festive stockings hanging off the front of it at Christmas time. Thank you for once again sharing the spender that you get to see each time you cut into a tree.
I don't know what it is, but the fact that this man addressed me as "friend" in the beginning of his videos, makes me want to watch everything he's got on the channel. There's something there that makes me know he truly means it.
I don’t own a mill but I sure enjoy what you do. Wish I was younger I would buy one. Question: how long does your saw blades last assuming no nails? It looks like you can sharpen them? Rod in Washington.
@@rodreid8555 hey friend and you know that strangers are friends like nathan that you have yet to meet. i am joking that i am having a midlife crisis and i am 65 years young. i am in a forced to be in a rehab institution so my former sister can piss away my hard earned savings. thank god money is in pensions that she can not touch. she makes promises that she can not keep. and does things that are plain evil. and she keeps digging holes that may get her in jail behind bars for the rest of her life. potential charges attempted murder of her one year older brother me. she promised to take care of my social security. not likely now she is in social security eyes as being a scammer. soon she will be reported for tax fraud filing mine and my deceased wife's state and federal taxes without my consent and without my review. she wanted to sell properties that have been in my family for over 50 years and she has not seen the property in 30 years. it was pasture land that grew from 50 acres to 75 acres for tax purposes. it grew from pasture in to a woodlot under the vermont land use program. i have a neighbor with a small 5 acre homestead who thinks he owns my land. but he may lose his land to cover the penalties for timber trespass. in terms of the kingston trio it takes a worried man to sing a worried song but i won't be worried long. my humble advice is to look for reasons to do something instead of reasons for not doing something. but be realistic also. don't let age be a reason for not doing something unless you are on your death bed. longevity has changed significantly in the last 100 years as knowledge grows. in colonial times life expectancy was around 35 years now it is about 80 years and it might change with covid but i personally know people over 100 years of age who are wanting to get called to heaven because they lived to long and they want to die. they live to die and i chose to die to live. my friend you have choices with the grace of god choice wisely if you chose to be old you are old if you chose to be young you are young. since i am 6 ft tall i probably will never be taller. i might shrink a little because of bone compression but it will never be as short as my life partner who became my wife who had scoliosis as a child and height challenges under 5 foot. but if i get on my knees she is a tad taller than me.but we might be closer to eye to eye. as mary chapin carpenter one of jane's favorite music artists. shut up and kiss me. i feel lucky. hey breakfast is calling and in burger king terms i am hangry ( hungry and angry that hot food is getting cold) so later friend.
That butternut is gorgeous. Some of us amateur carvers would love to be close enough to get some of the "off" cuts from your mill. I almost cried every time you said burn pile.
This is the only channel where I feel bad if I skip ahead over narration to get to 'the good stuff.' I only do it if I have just a few minutes to spare, but the presence you bring to your discussions on the wood and what's going on in your neck of the woods is a lot of the value of your videos. (Beautiful wood here, too)
Nathan I just enjoy spending time with you and your day. Yep snow is nice but a pain when it melts. Thanks so much for all your sharing and hard editing work. Peace and saefty be with you and your family!!!
WOW, just wow, that mantle is just gorgeous. The grain of that butternut/white walnut really is some B-E-A-UTIFUL wood. Sure wish I was in the market for a mantle, I'd buy that beam from you in a heartbeat. Thanks for sharing it with us. God really is an amazing artist, and you, like many sawyers, are great at finding the beauty He created.
I love the area of Tennessee you live in we live next door in eastern nc and Visit Tennessee every chance we get . Beautiful place and nice people. Awesome videos . Thanks for sharing
I was remembering as a little boy going to the local lumber mills with my dad to buy lumber for his chicken houses and barns. There used to be a lot of these small lumber mills back in those days but now only a few left. Those were good memories over 60 years ago watching lumber get milled with the big round blades when I was a child of 4 years old.
I love Butternut, my father cut one down years ago and saved a number of blocks from 3-5' long. The tree did not have a long trunk. Its been at least 40 yrs ago and I have been sawing it in to 3/8 boards I use to make jewelry boxes and such. A relative passed away recently, an army vet and I made a flag box for the family out of butternut. I use the rotted areas by using epoxy to fill and stabilize it. I really covet your boards, but I live in Oregon and I will just enjoy the fact that others like the wood as well. Nice show.
The money shot starts at 16:03 . Wow... This is my first time seeing Butternut. I've seen a tremendous amount of hardwoods over the years including hundreds of thousands of feet of surfaced Black Walnut. I've always liked it. I'm one of the very few people who enjoys the natural contrast between the sapwood and heartwood in walnut. This butternut really didn't look like anything too special until you hydrated the surface and brought out the grain. There are some gorgeous colors in that wood.
I went to work in a sawmill after high school in 1971. Our head rig was Two 42” circle saws , one over the other. I was head sawyer there until I became a heavy equipment operator in 1979. I’ve never lost my astonishment for breaking a log down into beautiful lumber. Ive built every house Ive lived in…6….but NEVER built the house before a shop. My woodworking tools have been with me my entire adult life. And so have my guitars and amps!
"White Walnut"! I learn something new every time I watch your channel. I must have 500bf that was given to me labeled White Walnut and little did I know it was Butternut. Thanks for sharing.
That bucket of water, ...that was a real treat. Can’t get any prettier than that. Thanks. I keep thinking what a beautiful coffee table that would make. Love it!
WOW !!! What a beautiful mantle that is going to make !! Wish I lived closer ... Alaska is a long ways away ! Love your videos. Give the kitties a scratch for me. I have just two rescue cats. They were outside, alone for about three years before I saw them and started putting out food for them. They both live inside now and are very happy cats. Always nice to see ALL your kitties ... NINE ... WOW !! Thanks for all you do to keep us entertained and informed. Wishing all the best to you and your family for this New Year.
I'm recovering from a major surgery and I find your videos very soothing to watch. Thank you for including Mama Cat. Your love for what you do is inspiring.
I saw a butternut kitchen in Fine Homebuilding magazine probably 40 years ago or more and it was beautiful. Always wanted one and it would be the kitchen of my dreams. I settled for a nice Beech this time. Nice to see the inside of this log. Amazing. Greetings from New England.
splash water on red cedar. it will be just like that with SPAR clear coating. SPAR is a high ultraviolet coating made for boating. last a long time and with age will slow the grey to next to nothing.
Wow...I remember the days when you had no sawmill shed. That wet, sticky snow would have shut you down for sure. You are really lucky to have found a property with that quonset building on it!!!
Watch everyday for your channel and videos, wonderful resourceful of nature, You’re like those logs, every time we open the videos it’s like Christmas every time.
WOW!!! The only butternut I knew about till this video was a squash. This is way more exciting! My folks, and in-laws, and us are all moving iut to Fall Branch. Just a skip from you! My father-in-law is 73, and been a cabinet maker most of his life. We are so excited to come and meet you and buy some beautiful slabs from you for our projects!!!
What an amazing place you live in, It is so beautiful. Thanks you for your videos, I look forward to them. I get so excited when I see a notification that OTW has posted a new video. I was surprised that Momma cat was out when it was snowing and wet.
I am envious of the bandsaw mill and the rest of your set up. The videos are great and thanks for your milling methods/explanations. Not many RU-vid sawyers get into the woods on the technicalities of the work. Glad to see your show does. Thanks!
Here i am sat at a computer in a house outside London UK, thinking what a great job you have. where did i go wrong all those years ago? Keep sniffing the sawdust and posting these great insights to another world.
Nathan Thankyou for showing us that beautiful Butternut. In Australia we have a pumpkin by that name which I assumed was because the inside was the colour of butter but sometimes we get them with the outside color same as your slabs. Loved you “revving” your friend we do it worse in Australia comes over well in speech but not so in texting. Know of an older gentleman Bernard Longbottom known to his mates as Bernie Short-ass, which he got all his life and took as a compliment from friends only mind.
My grandparents had two butternut trees in their front yard. One got rot and has been cut down. The other is trying to hang on... I remember my pap God rest his soul counting how many buckets of those sticky nuts he picked up every season. Part of me wants to cut up some of that tree thats left and make something nice from the wood. Miss my grandparents but part of me is glad they are gone and don't have to see how this world is ending up. There isn't many people from their generation left and the good values they had.
There's still a lot of good people in the world, they keep it running. That generation was tempered by the Depression and World War II and valued honesty and truth because it was necessary for survival. The younger generation will either learn it or perish without it, but I have faith.
Yeah, equality is a terrible thing... The older generations 'values' destroyed the environment and discriminated against people for their beliefs. Enough is enough and good riddance.
I remember way way back in high school being introduced to butternut. I made a number of projects with it over those next few years. Across from the wood shop was the ag shop. A classmate decide he was going to build a farm wagon from the ground up. His dad had a bunch of wood in their barn and he brought it to the school shop. So the next week came the lumber, all 2"walnut. In spite of the shop teachers trying to talk him out of using that beautiful well seasoned walnut for the wagon bed, he insisted. The most beautiful wagon bed I ever saw! Oh well! Thanks Kindky Bathan! DaveyJO in Pa.
Rain, rain, go away. Completely understand the sentiment, Nathan. We had more than 5” on the 1st and it has rained everyday here so far this year in not such large amounts, but definitely more than 1” each day. Need a couple of dry days in a row to finish cutting up some logs.
Imagine my surprise when your videos came up on my suggested watch list, as a woodworker who likes to watch milling videos. I hear a very familiar accent and looked up your website. I was born in Kingsport, raised in Gray, and lived in Kingsport until I was 30. Moved to Atlanta over 20 years ago. Want to move back now. Small world. Congrats on living the dream!
My first time watching and thank you. That log was absolutely gorgeous even before making it into anything. A work of art right off the mill. I am going to subscribe and enjoy more of your videos. Thanks again.
