In this video we'll be looking at the Spruce tree and harvesting some seeds. I detail what to look for in the pine cones of the spruce to signify they are ready for harvest, and demonstrate an easy way to collect seeds from the cone. The methods shown here are widely applicable to other spruce and pine trees.
I'll be storing these seeds and documenting cold stratification in a future video. My goal is to grow these seeds into trees next spring. Stay tuned to the channel to follow my tree growing journey!
Happy Harvesting!

I grew up with these in my front yard. Our white spruce is on the left side of the house and it looks like a huge Christmas tree!

I followed your harvest advise and it worked great. I would add a note to newbies that one should collect the cones as soon as they are ripe or before warm weather pops them open. I'm doing white spruce, larch and black spruce if I can get to the woods and find some cones.

Have you heard of MRS/Multiple Root Zones growing technique? For example trying to root a clone on both ends, or bending a lower branch of the plant into a separate growing medium to essentially have 2 root balls and 1 plant. There seems to be very little information regarding this online, would be awesome for you to try!
@JimmyBHarvests
@JimmyBHarvests 2 года назад
Haven’t heard of it with that name, but what you describe is similar to air layering- a method of rooting tree branches. Would definitely be interesting to try

I remember that I had a little spruce tree I have planted in six grade but that little tree is at a house I used to live at and I know it have been 7 years almost 8 years since I have graduated from high school but sometimes I do miss my little tree it just apart of the old house now to me it does seems like who ever owns the house they pretty much own the tree to

Nice video! I’ve been trying to do this but I was able to find the seeds, but they didn’t sink in water. Should I plant them anyway?
@JimmyBHarvests
@JimmyBHarvests Год назад
Ive used the float test to assess some bigger seeds, like walnuts and acorns, but i haven't tried it with these spruce seeds. They're so small i wouldn't really expect them to sink anyways. Probably fine to plant. Lettuce seeds are pretty similar in size and the floaters often still germinate. Best of luck and keep me posted im curious how it turns out!

What season did you harvest? Asking from Saskatchewan and I've never harvested tree seeds before. The kids and I just collected a ton to try and plant at our new farm but I haven't tried getting seeds out yet. Just wondering if I'm too early/late. Thanks 😊 🙏
@JimmyBHarvests
@JimmyBHarvests 2 года назад
I did this in the fall. If youre collecting now in the spring my guess would be that most seeds flew away out of the cones last fall/ winter. Could still be worth a try. I planted my seeds maybe 6-8 weeks ago and they are just starting to pop up out of the soil. Best of luck!

@@JimmyBHarvests oh ok. Thanks a lot! I'll try and see if I get any out. Worst case scenario I'd I get none and then I'll just try collecting some in a couple of months from what is already there. 😁

@tombryant4518
@tombryant4518 2 года назад
@@alphaomega8373 Ah, I see. I don’t get very many freeze/thaw cycles where I live to create the ice problems you have. Once it’s winter here, it’s -20°C for months with a month of -40 to -50°C thrown in for good measure. The falling needles feed the soil so I don’t need to clean anything up. Having some maples in my yard would be nice though!
