You don't need to destroy the bags during harvesting but invest in a simple semi-automatic bag grabber and its content pourer at 180 ° displacement so as to recycle the bags. Also, the deformations on the yams were due to stones or obstruction that prevented the yams forming well and also prevented their elongation. You could invest in sand hopper and stainer to take care of the stones whilst filling the bags. Your using of the machete is also bruising the yams. Once you can design a bag grabber and pourer, there shall be no need to use the machete as a digging tool. Think about it carefully. All the best. Thanks.
Did u prune the yam when it was flowering? And again u used clay soil to plant as I could hear from the sound of the shovel, the yams needed water but it was obvious they were not supplied with much to sustain their full growth that is why they are stunted, I have seen people harvest 5times bigger than yours. My parents started doing this and theirs is doing fine. They r to be harvested in two months time.
You can reuse the soil. How I do it is by mixing the soil with cow dung or chicken dung, bag the soil and plant my yam seedlings. This is where you save cost, you don't need to pay for soil to be supplied, all you need to do is treat the soil with manure and bag it. More saving is made since fertilizer application is eliminated as the soil is manure rich.
I harvested my yams thus month December after 8 months and they were mostly small though I added NPK fertiliser at some point, about 4 months after planting. Not sure why this is so. But I noticed my sand are not muddy like yours but more loose, could thus be why? What did I do wrong please?

Why destroy the bags can you find a method whereby the bags are shaked to loosen the dirt then pull the yams out or overturn the bags and remove the yams then reuse the bags again
You should do your research very well you can't grow Yam the way you did and get good results because: 1. You don't arrange the bags line by line, 2. There was no little gaps in between the bags at least there should be a little space of 3- 5 cm, 3. You didn't do proper staking that all Yam stem can hangs on , 4.those big stones should not be allowed in to the bags because it most surely cause hindrance to the growth of the Yam tubers ,5. Your Yam toots did not breath well because there was no penetration of AIR into the bags. So you have a lot to do because the results of those yam tubers were too poor compared to the money you have invested on each bag that might runs in to millions of naira in total cost, if care is not taking that business May runs at lost.
