Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Alonso Duralde, Film Critic, Podcaster, Author, “Hollywood Pride: A Celebration of LGBTQ+ Representation and Perseverance in Film”
About Harvey's guest:
Today’s guest, Alonso Duralde, is a renowned film critic, journalist, author and podcaster whose movie reviews and commentaries have brought him great respect, both within the film industry and among the general public.
He’s held a number of prestigious positions, including artistic director at the USA Film Festival in Dallas, arts and entertainment editor at The Advocate magazine, film critic for MSNBC.com, senior film critic for The Wrap, and featured critic for Rotten Tomatoes. He co-hosted the T Y T Network program “What the Flick”, and he’s been a writer and editor for The Village Voice, Movieline, and Detour Magazine.
Currently, he’s the Chief US Film Critic for The Film Verdict. In 2005 our guest wrote a great book entitled, “A Hundred and One Must-See Movies for Gay Men”. Five years later, he published another really fun book called “Have Yourself a Movie Little Christmas”, which highlights the best - and worst - movies of the Yuletide season. A few years ago he followed that up with another wonderful book that he co-authored, entitled, “I’ll Be Home For Christmas Movies”.
And now, he’s released his brand new book published by TCM entitled, “Hollywood Pride: A Celebration of LGBTQ+ Representation and Perseverance in Film”. This meticulously researched and beautifully written book reveals the fascinating and often suppressed history of the evolution of queer culture on film, spanning from the dawn of cinema, through the “pansy craze” of the 1930s, the Red Scare of the ‘50s, the New Queer Cinema of the ‘90s, all the way up to today, chronicling the evolution of LGBTQ+ storytelling.
This comprehensive book is entertaining and insightful, and highlights the most important, groundbreaking movies, and showcases the achievements not only of the actors, but also the writers, directors, producers, and others behind the scenes, whose achievements defined and exemplified the best of the film industry.
Our guest is a member of the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and the National Society of Film Critics, and he currently co-hosts THREE highly popular podcasts: “Linoleum Knife”, “Maximum Film” and “Breakfast All Day”. He’s also appeared on CNN, PBS, TCM, ABC, in addition to being featured in numerous documentaries.

As someone who wrote a Ph.D dissertation on E.M.Forster in the late eighties (and was confronted with a surprising amount of resistance in addressing Forster’s homosexuality) I find Alonso’s ideas, enthusiasm, & energy to be a positive indicator that society can embrace acceptance & change! Thanks for bringing him into the spotlight Harvey😀

@@harveybrownstoneinterviews8980 Thanks. I'm British and wonder, if the E.M. Forster dissertation had been undertaken here, it might have been a more condusive environment? The US seems to live with the legacy of Puritanism. I didn't know about the book, Harvey...thanks, much appreciated.

Great interview, Harvey. I agree with Alonso-and yourself-about outing those who are harming their community. The one time I remember where this was openly discussed amongst the Ontario media was just prior to the 1995 provincial election where the media was strongly considering outing two closeted Liberal MPPs who had voted against the Bob Rae government’s Bill 167. One was a Northern MPP who wouldn’t be defeated until riding amalgamation forced him into a race with a longtime New Democrat MPP in 1999. The other was a southern Ontario member who had risen within the party and lasted until 2018 before being defeated. As a local weekly newspaper reporter then, I was in on many of the back room discussions but didn’t have a vote. In the end, they decided not to touch it but would leave it to these two members’ local media and opponents. Here in my neck of the woods, there was much debate at the longest serving member’s daily newspaper but the publisher ruled against it. Some local New Democrats were urging their campaign to expose it but the candidate refused to be a part of it, citing “it’s nobody’s business but his own” and “there’s no smoking gun.” There have been other examples since where the provincial media chose not to out somebody. That only changed when Conservative cabinet minister Jim Wilson was outed by Global News at the end of 2018. Every other media outlet worded the story in such a way as to keep his sexuality out of the story. Personally, I’m still not sure where I stand. But I do know in the case of Jim Wilson, I really felt bad for him. He had tried so hard to keep his sexuality hidden (even though it was an open secret at Queen’s Park since his earliest days there). But in the case of the two Liberals who voted against Bill 167, ironically, those who supported it within the Liberal caucus were the only ones defeated in 1995 while in the NDP caucus, the “dirty dozen,” as those who voted against were termed within the party, they were all defeated even though the main reason they all cited for voting No was the fear of being defeated…

As an Ontario citizen and Canada’s first openly gay judge, I remember this part of our political history. Thank you for calling attention to it.

Thank you for presenting Mr. Duralde and his book. There is always talk about the stereotype and representation. How about if you are the stereotype and want that representation?

Daniel j travanti was a gay man and did more for the gay and lesbian community than any other actor when he portrayed the lead in hill street blues. He never played captain furillo as a gay stereotype

Sounds like an interesting read. When it comes to tackling homosexuality and AIDS, though, I have to respectfully disagree with Alonso Duarte, regarding ‘Philadelphia.’ When that film came out, I was writing for my college newspaper and can still remember how I phrased it: It’s like ‘The Waltons’ tackle AIDS.” This may have been simplistic, but when I compared ‘Philadelphia’ to the earlier ‘Lomgtimr Companion,’ I was very disappointed. I remain steadfastly convinced that whenever a studio tries to make a film about a controversial social issue, they will always go for the most inoffensive route, whereas an independent film is only concerned with telling a story in the clearest way possible! Even if we just compare the characters of the two Oscar-nominated straight men from the two films, Bruce Davison’s openly affectionate with his same-sex partner while Tom Hanks’ portrayal doesn’t include a couple that was affectionate. Even the TVM ‘An Early Frost’ portrayed a same-sex partnership that was more affectionate with one another-and yet it had to overcome even harsher standards and practices reviews of it. The result is a TVM that I still enjoy watching, whereas one viewing was all I wanted of ‘Philadelphia.’

I agree with you but I also agree with Alonso that Philadelphia definitely garnered much empathy for gays and AIDS victims.

Call me crazy. Always felt John travolta played a gay man in Saturday night fever. I believe next to top gun it is very much a gay movie. Luke skywalker might have been one of the first gay characters in space. Isn’t that fully transparent

Abraham Lincoln was our first gay president and our first Jewish president. By the way His beloved Jewish mother was named Sarah. He died whilst attending the theatre and seeing a musical. By the way He loved showtimes and who else but a gay Jewish men would do so much for blacks minorities. Is there any doubt ? Many gay historians have evidenced that he slept in the same bed with his law partner for over a decade. It’s really sad to me that American historians have covered up and buried Abraham Lincoln’s Jewish and gayness. Very sad
