On today’s EFD Explained, we explore Diego Simeone’s struggling Atletico Madrid side. Having spent more than any Spanish club bar Barcelona over the last five years, are his new tactics failing at the Wanda Metropolitano? Where do his main problems lie? And can he turn it around following a nightmare run of losses in December?
Diego Simeone recently marked a decade in the Atletico Madrid job. When he took over Los Colchoneros in December 2011, the club sat 10th in the league following five losses in eight games, and had won just one piece of silverware in the previous 15 seasons. They lost just five more games in the rest of the campaign with the Argentinian coach in charge, finishing fifth, their highest placing in three years, also winning the Europa League.
The following season he guided them to the Copa del Rey, beating Real Madrid at the Bernabeu in the final and ending a 26-game winless streak against their arch rivals in the process, before going one better in 2013-14, winning La Liga against the odds and reaching the Champions League final, beating Barcelona and Chelsea en route to the showpiece and coming seconds away from embarrassing Real for the second season running.
Another title followed in 2021, but since signing a new three-year contract, Simeone’s side has lost its magic, and now look in danger of missing out on Champions League qualification for the first time in a decade.

Replacing Simeone at Atleti is like replacing Wenger at Arsenal: it can sound like a good idea, but in reality can lead to something far worse if there's not a solid plan in mind.

I’m an atléti fan too and Simeone is a legend for all he has done but he has to go before he ruins his legacy. I’m my opinion he’s been bad for the last 4 seasons especially this one. Last season sure we won the league but against a horrible Real Madrid and Barcelona. He is the best paid manager for what to be in the top 3 in la liga? This is the best attacking team we’ve had and we can’t score there’s clearly something wrong with our tactics. When we score we immediately go back to defending the rest of the game knowing how bad our defense situation is. Maybe I’m being to hard on him since I expect so much from this current team but that still doesn’t explain how we lost so many of our games halfway through the season BTW love your name and I hope they reboot the manga

Why is sacking Wenger seen as a mistake? He finished 6th the next season we finished 5th the problems we’ve had since then is because the poor squad that was left Wenger would’ve been in the same situation either way our problems are not because we sacked Wenger it’s because of not spending money for years and poor recruitment and management from the board. The only mistake in sacking Wenger was the way he was treated by some fans

Atleti fan here. If Simeone stays, we need to sign players that fit his 442 grit and grind style. Players with strong character who are willing to work hard on defense, no matter what position the play. Right now we have gone too far from that idea. That is just my opinion, but it is true that the team did very well playing 352 the first half of last season. 2021 whole was a disaster if you look at the raw numbers, we only won the league because of the first half

@@nikhil796 Felipe play better in 442 while for Hermoso, his LCB position always get exposed by opposition because he always get outnumbered with the space that carrasco left. I mean, he led them to a league title less than 12 months ago? This isn't a situation like the one Arsenal had, in which they went 10 years without another league title. (Atleti fan) I think one of the big points that often goes unmentioned is how many managers wanted to leave here almost as soon as they got here after realizing how difficult it is to work with our majority owner, Gil. One of the reasons Simeone has lasted so long here is because he's one of the few managers willing to put up with Gil. I don't think there any established managers who would be willing to deal with him and our sporting director (i.e. not having much say in transfers), and besides that they might find it hard to succeed without the full backing of the board you get at a lot of other big clubs. Soon enough, we have a never-ending coaching carousel reminiscent of the pre-Simeone days, sink back down into midtable mediocrity, and then we have to hope our board doesn't continue to screw things even more since they no longer have the yearly UCL/top 4 money to work with. If we are to bring a new manager, it needs to be someone who's not only excellent and already suits our style, but also someone who's used to working with what's given to him rather than bringing in what he needs. All of this is precisely why, as long as Simeone lives, I'd rather he stay. One small downturn does not undo how much we've grown under Cholo these past 10 years.

The reason why some Atletico Madrid fans don't want Diego Simeone to leave Atletico is because of the success Atletico achieved during his tenure. They are grateful for his contributions to the club ( which is good ). But the reason why people like me think why Diego Simeone should leave is because we feel that Atletico Madrid is underachieving with the talent that the squad possess, the is because Simeone defensive mindedness stifles and underutilises the attacking capabilities of the squad. Hence why they are have underachieved in the previous Champions League seasons.

And Simeone and Jose like players that only do one job which is making it difficult for them and both of them have not evolved one bit accordingly to the game. Simeone is the highest paid manager in the world and he produces garbage football and his mentality is still thinking of his team as underdog which they are not .
