My experience with Docs started in 2020 with one in smooth leather, worst blisters in my life, I gave them to someone who most probably had the same experience. Then someone in a Dr Martens store told me they exist in a soft leather pascal virgin. Since this time I only wear Dr Martens and I feel perfect. Only negative thing is that I am walking a lot and the rubber soles are not very resisting on the heels. After six months they should get repaired, but to repair the white mono-soles seems impossible.

@@Fodaydontplay white smooth leather platforms, beautiful 🤷‍♀️. True I walk a lot 😉. I still wear them, but I would have preferred to have the heels repaired. Since I wear only Dr Martens and Birkenstocks no foot, knee or hip pain whatsoever. Even if some people say they were not good, i recognize the leather could be better, but my feet feel perfect in them 🤩.

I only got my first pair of Doc's in 2011, so I can't comment on the older ones, but from my experience with DM's, all of my pairs of Doc's are still going strong. I had my first pair of Doc's resoled with the original DM's soles after 3 years because I wore the heels down on the outsides, but all of my other Doc's are still on their original soles which are in great condition still. Here in the UK we have a shoe Repair company called Timpsons, they have repair shops practically everywhere in the UK , and can resole Doc's with the original DM's soles, but it costs £60-£70, as they have to send them away to do it, because of the special process required, but well worth it if the uppers are still in good condition. Ironically The only pair Doc's I've ever had issues with were when I got my Made in England 1914's in 2013, the welt on the left boot was leaking air when I got them home and put them on, so got in touch with the Dr martens store where I bought them right away, and went back the same day and they exchanged them for me, and that pair is still going strong a decade later, in fact it can still take the skin off my heels sometimes if I wear them all day. My eldest pair of Doc's 1460's (which I no longer wear regularly) are now 12 years old, followed by the second eldest, my Mie 1914's at 10 years old, and 1461's at 9 years old, For Life 1460's at 8 years old, 1490's at 6 years old, Jadon at 4.1 years old, and finally 8761 BXB at 3.3 years old, and all of them are in excellent condition, and in my opinion, now look better with age and dirty 😉 Also got a pair of Doc's sandals but can't remember the year I got them, haven't worn them a lot, as they take the skin off the backs of my heels, just can't seem to break them in 🤷🏻‍♂️ So my experience with Doc's that are Made here in England vs those made abroad has been good for both, all are still going strong. I'm a Dr. Martens superfan and I'll wear them for the rest of my Life 🥰

Well, I think the made in Asia boots are fine boots for what you are paying. I think that most people buy docs for their artistic esthetic and there slightly better durability then your run of the mill sneaker. And the made in Asia ones will give you that. I think people mostly complain due to having wrong expectations. docs are mass produced and due to their often plastic coating will crease or show wear and tear eventually. Fine leather aficionados will never be content with the standard leather of docs. They can have their fancy 800 dollar cowboy boots. If you like docs just buy them you’re getting you money’s worth even if they only last you 2 years imho.

I've heard this about Docs. I had a pair from the 90s that lasted a decent amount of time. A few years, at least. On the other hand I had a pair from the early 2000's that lasted over a decade. Granted they weren't the same style and I didn't wear either pair every day, but still, that's a long time. I've also heard the quality of Red Wing footwear has dropped significantly. I bought a pair of those around 5 years ago and they didn't seem to feel as comfortable as previous pairs.

@brettjohnson5102
@brettjohnson5102 2 месяца назад
@catkim4110 From what I have read, they coat the outside layer of leather in a layer of plastic. It looks great when you're walking out of the shoe store, but the longevity is sus. I watched a Doc enthusiast's RU-vid video a while back and the guy was recommending to use leather products (like conditioners and oils) on the inside of the boots because the products can't be absorbed through the outside due to that plastic coating. Maybe that would help them hold up better. I've been thinking about getting the 1461 mono with the slip resistant soles for work. I'm work in manufacturing, and I've been buying slip resistant sneakers. A lot of them! They don't last for long either, and they're not cheap. Some of them cost as much as Docs, or even more. Are those Docs at least comfortable? (after you break them in, of course)
@brettjohnson5102
@brettjohnson5102 2 месяца назад
@OriginallyKamara They used to be great, top of the line boots back in the day. Idk wtf they did with their manufacturing process.. I bought the most expensive pair they were selling a few years ago. They're holding up, but I don't wear them to work anymore because I changed careers. I still use them to shovel snow and do side jobs on cars sometimes. If you decide to get a pair from Red Wings, I would advise you to splurge and buy a really nice pair. Maybe I just got a pair of lemons before I got my current pair. They seem to be holding up better than the previous pair I bought. According to Vice, the Red Wing classic Moc are the best American made boots you can buy. Maybe try on a pair of those if they suite your style and budget.

I say yes because when a product is in high demand you would need to go to Asia to speed things up which does annoy some people who want quality. I never own any docs in my life and not older versions which I’m trying to find but from what I heard from other people who own both the leather was thicker and more supportive on the older versions while the modern versions are so thin and floppy(you must have noticed this) and easily cracks and creases badly also they have that heavy plastic coating which makes it losses it’s durability and the Made in England leather on it they use a nice finish on cheap leather to disguise it as a nicer leather.The soles on the older versions wear more hard wearing and lasting longer while the modern MIE versions they wear way fast and you can’t do anything about it which is frustrating while the Asian ones the soles are okay but they won’t last long still. The construction on the older versions people said it was way comfortable and supportive while the all modern versions were to squishy as a sneaker feel and not that supportive because the out soles are squishy but there is no wooden shank and a shank is there to give you arch support and without it it makes the boot uncomfortable and doc martens said it they removed it for structural integrity issues but honestly that’s a bad move because the shank also maintains a boots shape. The midsole on the older versions midsoles was way better because everything was thicker while the Asian made versions is just pure cheap foam and it will easily loses its durability that easily while the modern MIE versions sucks because the midsole is so thin you might as well not have it there. So yeah docs are different.
@Fodaydontplay
@Fodaydontplay Год назад
You made a lot of good points. I do not disagree with them moving to Asia. I think that quality should not change. They changed their marketing to targeting teens. I think they are going towards things that look good and it is hurting the quality.
@graceleiper9198
@graceleiper9198 Год назад
I do think the quality has gone down on the soles, but only in the past few years. I think Dr Martens is trying to save money and the easiest spot to do that is with the soles (except for the platforms and bex soles). I have owned Docs made in England, Thailand, Vietnam, China, and Laos. The worst quality were the made in china, but even those weren't that bad. All my other MIA Docs have all had the same or better quality to the MIEs. I have always taken good care of the leather, though, and don't drag my feet like a tired sasquatch, so my Docs last a really long time. I had several friends in hs who would burn through their docs painfully fast, and I noticed that it was always my friends who were either heavier set, or dragged their feet really badly, or both. Docs were cheaper back then, so it wasn't too big of a deal when they had to buy a new pair. They have always just been THAT comfortable.

Personally I think the Made In England Doc label is a con. I only have one pair of Docs (Asia) and one pair of Solovair (England) but I have done plenty of research, we all know that Solovair or NPS shoes Ltd originally made the Docs then Docs went Asia. The Docs made in England have not maintained the original construction technique, they have dropped the inner and outer sole stitching process in all their boots Asia or made in England. Only Solovair have maintained the traditional ways.

@ReverendFishStick Год назад
I would honestly pay 300 USD if Dr Martens made a boot of comparable quality to the early 90's models. That also means it needs to match the longevity of the older pairs as well. Having never owned a pair pre 2010's myself, I can't speak on behalf of key differences, but watching Rose Anvil's videos on the brand and taking in info from older customers, I look at my made in Bangladesh Bex smooth leather boots and wonder how long these will last. I love the silhouette, it is an iconic boot, yet if my pair were to fail in the next 5 years, whether it be to cracked leather or split soles, I probably wouldn't stick with the brand.
@Fodaydontplay
@Fodaydontplay Год назад
At that price point, they will be competing with a new market which is a good idea. Which brand are you looking to invest in after docs?
@ReverendFishStick
@ReverendFishStick Год назад
@@Fodaydontplay Probably the generic answer, which is Solovair, but I have also heard some negative reviews concerning that company's product, same issues, leather cracking etc. It may come down to the not so premium, over corrected leather both brands use. But also, I wonder just how many of these customers who complain of defective/ failing products even condition their leather with the WB or Mink Oil. I'm overly cautious and baby my leather, making sure to focus on conditioning the insides because the outside has a coating as I've heard... Love the videos- on an unrelated note.
@Fodaydontplay
@Fodaydontplay Год назад
@@ReverendFishStick yeah.. I am about to try a pair of solovair but you are right about taking care of your boots… how long does it take to dry if you condition the inside of your boots? I’ll get eager to put them on
@ReverendFishStick
@ReverendFishStick Год назад
@@Fodaydontplay Haha, I speed the process with the warm setting on my hair dryer, not letting the air stay in one place too long so I don't ruin the leather. I try to mimic leaving it out on a sunny day, but indoors obviously. For me, the first two times, the first with WB and with mink oil a month later, I put them on directly after applying the conditioner and warming, I let it mold to my feet and disregard waiting entirely because I am usually doing this at home without any appointments to go out. My socks have never gotten wet per say. Having used both WB and Mink oil, I can attest that the oil brought on a more radical change, it made the leather more pliable and left the slightest shine , whereas the WB was matte and hydrated the leather to a lesser extent. Makes me ponder if Doc owners should reach for the in house balsam or go with the oil. Some of those gnarly creases on some pairs I've seen maybe could have been circumvented if there were supple enough conditioning to treat the thin, lower mid range leather.

The top of my foot started to hurt and I thought maybe the tongue got bent somehow. I got home and took them off and where the tongue meets the toe part of the boot, I guess the leather is too hard right there bc it was rubbing and that was quite painful. And my left foot has a blister where my foot was sliding up and down. I tried thin socks and thick socks. I went to take them back and the lady begged me to keep them for a little while longer bc she knew how bad I wanted them and how long it took me to find them. So I agreed to take them back home. If you wear the current docs for eight hours plus a day, you will definitely notice a difference between old docs and new docs because of the lack of a shank. Also,the soles of the current batch of docs despite what they may tell you are definitely made of a much poor quality material than what was on the original Doc Martens , I know this, because I have several pairs of the of the pre move to Asia Dr Martens and the soles on those are still in good shape, unfortunately on the more recent pair of Doc’s the Soles wore out very quickly. Funny thing is I tried to replace my older docs with new ones and ended up giving away the newer docs and keeping the old ones. Fortunately, I have discovered the Solovair’s and they have become my go to go to work boots because they fit and feel exactly like my original do.

You've noticed newer Doc Martens just don't hold up like the old ones, especially if you're on your feet all day. The soles wear out way faster now, and they're missing a shank, making a big difference in comfort. You ended up sticking with your old Docs and even gave away the new ones you tried to switch to. Luckily, you found Solovair boots, which feel just like the original Docs used to, and they've become your new go-to work boots.

In the early 2000s, Griggs went out to China and brought all the machinery etc with them. At that time they were made exactly the same as they left Northampton. They then realised they could do it a lot cheaper, taking the shank out, making the leather thinner by coating it with more PU ( polyurethane, plastic ) Soles got less dense and then permira came along and they became nearly like converse boots. I'm 55. I wore DM shoes to school and now I where DM boots to work. Take care care of them and DMs will last a very long time.

So basically you make a video because you saw someone else’s video and had the nerve to feature them in your video?

I actually still own several pairs of pre 2000 doc martens these shoes of lasted me over 20 years…unfortunately with a new made in Asia doc martens I was lucky to get 20 months out of them. One pair in particular, the fisherman style sandals were believe it or not replaced three times during one year I owned them by doc martens. So how’s the quality of doc martin dropped over the last 20 years in my opinion..yes. That being said, there are made in England doc martens which you can purchase, which have a better quality of leather, unfortunately, another difference between the pre-2000 doc martens, and the current doc martens is that the material which they use to make their souls is softer than the original doc martin soles 😢which causes soles to degrade, and wear out much faster than the originals Dr Martens Soles. Also, the absence of a shank makes a big difference over time.

okay.. that's nice to know.. i wonder why did the quality decrease.. they have been good at making the brand last for decades. Do you only wear your older docs now?

@@Fodaydontplay I wore them to work yesterday. My wife kept wanting me to replace it with the new ones unfortunately the new ones kept falling apart so I’m glad I kept the old ones.
