HEAR YE HEAR YE and feast thine ears - the fruits of my labour with @BeedleTheBardcore, a Medieval/Renaissance cover of Hozier's "Take Me to Church"!
Latin counterpoint on the final chorus is from the Gloria movement from William Byrd's Mass for 4 Voices, which you should totally listen to the whole thing because those harmonies are just chefs kiss
Here's the Gloria to get you started: • Byrd: Mass for 4 voice...
Lyrics and Vocals are mine, any reposts without permission will be reported because that's just not very nice :)
Image is a rendering by Ken Hendrickson of "The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa", a sculpture by Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
Lyrics and translation:
my mistress hath whimsy
she brings mirth out of misery
has all the courts denunciation
yet to worship her i hasten
if’twere true the heavens didst speak
then their prophetess is she
ev’ry sabbath seeming more bleak
new plagues on us each week
we were born to sin, thou hast heard it
Mine church offers no indulgence
she bids me worship in her chambers
the sole heaven t’will admit me
were i alone with thee
I was born base
but twas my fate
proclaim me to be pure
amen
hasten to church
i worship like a cur at thy shrine of deceit
to confess my sins, may my penance be fleet
unto me that sweetest death
mon dieu, fealty shall i swear,
laudamus te,
(we praise you)
adoramus te, benedicimus te,
(we adore you, we bless you)
glorificamus te, credo in te,
(we glorify you, I believe in you)
quoniam tu solus sanctus
(for you alone are holy)
amen miserere mei -
(amen, have mercy)
twere I a heathen in mine own right
i, the east and she the sunlight
to stay aligned with mine saviour
she demands of me favour
parch the seven seas
a bauble to appease
bring us flesh for the main course
tis a well bred high horse
what lies in yonder stable?
lo, a horde of hungered faithful
yon looks savory
yon looks plenty
tis voracious work
hasten to church
i worship like a cur at thy shrine of deceit
to confess my sins, may my penance be fleet
unto me that sweetest death
mon dieu, fealty shall i swear,
laudamus te,
(we praise you)
adoramus te, benedicimus te,
(we adore you, we bless you)
glorificamus te, credo in te,
(we glorify you, I believe in you)
quoniam tu solus sanctus
(for you alone are holy)
amen miserere mei -
(amen, have mercy)
no masters, nor kings
when the sacrament begins
there is no sweeter innocence than our gentle sin
in the madness and mire
of that debased scene
only then am i mortal
only then am i clean
hasten to church
i worship like a cur at thy shrine of deceit
to confess my sins, may my penance be fleet
unto me that sweetest death
mon dieu, fealty shall i swear,
laudamus te,
(we praise you)
-- Et in terra pax
-- (on earth, peace)
-- Hominibus bonae voluntatis.
-- (and to all those of good will)
adoramus te, benedicimus te,
(we adore you, we bless you)
glorificamus te, credo in te,
(we glorify you, I believe in you)
quoniam tu solus sanctus
(for you alone are holy)
amen miserere mei -
(amen, have mercy)

Most bardcore channels just use a loot, skin drums and flutes to cover songs but then don't change the melody or the tone of the song to make it truly sound medieval. But you changed the song for the better, you made melodic and harmonic changes that would be more accurate to/present in medieval pieces, AND changed the lyrics to Olde English. ABSOLUTELY Brava!

if anyone was wondering, the Latin is we praise you*, we adore you we bless you, we glorify you I have faith** in you because you alone are holy, Amen Have mercy on me*** (some notes below) *Gloria in Excelsis Deo, a Christian hymn, contains the lyrics "laudamus te, benedicimus te, adoramus te, glorificamus te". Gloria is used in several rites and masses **credo literally means 'I believe', originally it was specifically a religious type of belief, but eventually became belief in any set of principals. within the context of the song I thought the best way to convey the religious belief in translation would be "have faith in" ***Miserere is the Latin name of Psalm 51, and Miserere Mei, Deus is a musical setting for said psalm. interestingly enough, there's a lot of parallels between the (modern) english lyrics of Take Me to Church and the text of this psalm

Sweet mercy, this song already had BDSM overtones to my ears. Now it's an ecstatic paean by a nun to the saint who visits her in her visions and transports her in all the ways. (For those scratching their heads at me, ecstatic medieval worship included sexual interactions with the powers being honored. It's in the writings, unquestionably.) BRAVO. BRAVISSIMO. the use of Latin was excellent, really added to the worshipful imagery since at the time, liturgy would obviously be in Latin idk why youtube recommended it now instead of earlier but it's truly beautiful. I think one of the key elements of Take Me To Church to me is that in my home city there's a church that was bombed during the blitz and remains that way to this day, and sometimes they have performances there. Take Me To Church is one of the songs I could imagine being played there and this cover exemplifies that

i feel like, rarely does a cover make me better understand the original and i feel, this song did. this, has so much feeling in it, it's beautiful. i feel like a sinner, worshipping my mistress just as she demands, she makes me need church to heal the sins she brings out of me yet at the same time, she is my church. she IS what makes me pure and whole. she is a whirlwind of lust and love and nothing else matters, but her. the original didn't give me that feeling, even though the words implied that's how i should be feeling. you took that song and you brought out the feeling the original artist couldn't. i admire, your story telling prowess. i agree with Hilde (though I'm no where near you two) it's clear to me that you know your stuff.

This is absolutely fabulous, and sounds like it came out of Blasphemous the game! The Latin lines just sent me. Very well done! It also is a good example of how translation is always an interpretation -- both the original and this are (mostly) in English, and are technically saying the same thing, but the connotations of this version is very different. The speaker in this version is still a devout Catholic.

I clicked on this song expecting a meme. Instead, I was blessed with a deeply passionate, spiritual experience. My jaw is permanently unhinged as I stare, mystified, lost in such beautiful music. These lyrics are poetry & the instrumental stroked my heart until I reached exquisite bliss. I've not yet known such ecstasy. I feel like I just lost my virginity.

Tis voracious work. I know you're English but that line was basically an Irish accent right there.

@@EliseRothMusic Have you tweeted this cover to Hozier? He's very receptive for covers and I know for a fact he'd be interested since his early career involved him singing old Irish songs and classical pieces. Anúna was the name of one of the groups he was involved in. Not the same, but he does appreciate older sounding music.

I usually don’t comment but I’ve been waiting almost a year for a bardcore version of this song to come out and you fucking delivered. You made this song connect with me on such a deeper level I cant even explain
