Hatchery or Wild?!? Oregon Winter Steelhead Fishing

Went out fishing on the middle finger of the Notellum River. We caught 1 steelhead and a few trout. The biggest part of the day was when we had to decide whether or not the fish was a hatchery mis clip, or a wild fish with a small adipose fin. Ultimately we decided to play is safe, even though we were pretty sure it was a hatchery fish. Ultimately the officer who can write you a fine is the one who gets the final say, so it's really difficult to guess whether or not they would side with you. The safest thing to do when you are not sure, is to err on the side of not putting yourself into that predicament. Hope you enjoy the video!

Having worked for Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife for several years doing hatchery sampling, I can tell you boys the amount of missed or partial clips is astounding! ODFW often uses volunteers to mark hatchery fish with little quality control. You made the safe but, frustrating decision. Great content as always.

Nice Fish! You can always tell whether or not it is a wild or hatchery by looking at the dorsal fin if you're unsure. Its dorsal is very pointed and most all hatchery fish dorsal fins are beaten down. Kudos to you! You guys made the right decision.

Thank you for the feedback. It was tough to let it go, but in the end we felt it was better to be safe.

I didn't know there was clipped steelhead there good to know I got a summer in that spot in November though

Yeah, there are hatchery fish in almost every river system. Even if there is no hatchery, there are usually a few strays that wander in.

That might be the smallest adipose fin I’ve ever seen lol! Definitely doesn’t look like a clearly clipped fin though, it looks too intact to not be wild. Good call on releasing it and congrats on getting on the board on tough year!

Better to let a fish go then to get a ticket and have it confiscated anyway. Thanks for stopping by Bruce!

I always say steelhead are the fish of a thousand casts. It seems that way to me. About 1,000 casts per fish. I think you made the right decision on the release. My buddy was fishing about a month ago and observed two guys land a wild fish. They clipped the fin and released it. I guess so at some point someone could keep it. He passed the info to the warden.

Feels like this year it was the fish of 10,000 casts. That’s too bad he saw people do that, glad he reported it though

Man, nice fish! I would have to agree and good call on releasing. The dorsal fin looks pretty intact for a hatchery fish. Sometimes those hens do have smaller adipose fins, so when in doubt check the dorsal for pond rub. Either way a sweet fish! Good to see a vid!

Great insight. The other fins were in tact and in good shape. Sometimes it’s hard to think it through when you’re excited to land one

Can I keep wild trout?
@NorthwestOpenSeason

You need to look up the trout regulations for the specific body of water you’re fishing.

Nick, did you notice if that steelhead had a maxillary clip, that would also indicate a hatchery fish. If it didn't I would not keep it, not worth the risk, but to me that is a hatchery miss clip.

@@NorthwestOpenSeason Nick, I agree, look at the bright side, Steelhead unlike Salmon, are not programmed to die after they spawn. There is a good chance that fish will spawn and head back out to the ocean and return maybe 2 - 5 lbs bigger in a year or two. Who knows maybe in 4 years or so you may catch one of her offspring, of course it would be wild but thats ok to...

@@NorthwestOpenSeason fly fishing is my least favorite by a mile. Hate taking my time to land a fish I like using heavy line so I don’t fuck around. Oh I say what I say is because I don’t do bait. Artificial only open water or river.

Native or not that was Terrible handling of a fish. If you are going to be catch and release fishing please try to to drag the fish on the bank sand and fingers in their gills are not good for the survival odds. Nice little fish though and great editing on the video!!

Try not to**
@NorthwestOpenSeason
@NorthwestOpenSeason 3 года назад
We always try to handle fish carefully, especially when we’re not sure if it’s a keeper. No net was used, it was beached onto a sandy spot, no fingers placed in gills, and then we kept the fish in the water while we kept talking about it. “Terrible” seems pretty harsh, but regardless, we’ll try to be more careful in the future. And thank you for the kind words on the editing, I’ve been working hard to make them better quality and I’ve learned a lot since we first started a few years ago.

That dorsal was too perfect tho and stuck straight up like a native. If the adipose is questionable then next I judge the dorsal 🤘🏻 fishwithjd.com/2019/11/14/how-to-tell-wild-steelhead-from-hatchery-steelhead/
