Today, Levi finally addresses an age-old topic that's been wreaking havoc on paint around the car show scene for decades...THE DUSTER.
Sure, if you hold the duster at a precise angle in the correct lighting with the planets aligned juuuust-so, you can sometimes use a high-quality duster without scratching. (If you're lucky) But the fact of the matter is most duster-owners don't use them properly and their paint pays the price.
Here at TRC, we don't think dusters are a gamble you should take with your car's paint, so Levi suggests some alternatives for you or anyone you may know who's still stuck in the duster mindset!

Right on schedule, the guy who uses the method that's been proven over and over again to be damaging, but "has never had a problem." Either your car has been kept in a vacuum, or you've been swirling it with a duster, it's one or the other. Now those swirls may not bother you, which is totally fine, but they are there without question.

This is great and raises good points. And for my motorcycle, which has a normal carnuba wax coating on it, i always use a proper wash. But for the car, the car duster is much quicker. I ceramic coated my car and now use the car duster max twice a week. i get the ceramic coating replaced every year.

Actually the duster is fine as long as you follow the directions. Too many people don't understand that you LIGHTLY dust the vehicle. Meaning the duster barely touched the paint. They have a tendency to apply too much pressure or allow the dusters weight to sit down on the vehicle. I've used them for years and I detail cars. All my cars have been black and when I use my duster I don't get any spider webbing or marks.
@adamcoe
@adamcoe 2 года назад
Actually it isn't and that has been proven many, many times but sure, keep telling yourself that paint care technology has not advanced whatsoever in like 50 years and the Cali duster is clearly the peak and cannot be improved upon. Honestly the way people talk about them, every sentence is like "well as long as you hover it an inch above and not contact the paint at all, some of the dust will come off from the breeze of moving the duster around!" or "well obviously if you apply more than 2 oz of pressure then you'll get marring, so clearly microfibers are in no way better. These aren't designed to remove ALL dust, just the top .01 micron." Just because you can't see the marks that you are without question leaving, doesn't mean they aren't there. Get out a Scangrip and I assure you, you are in for a treat.
@diamondrmp
@diamondrmp 2 года назад
@@adamcoe No where did I say "Cali duster is clearly the peak and cannot be improved upon." Reading comprehension is very important. Now let's see. I am 60 years old. I detailed cars for over 30 years until my hips and back got old. lol I have had over 10 cars and ALL were black and I am anal about my paint. I can assure YOU that if done correctly it does no more damage then washing a very dirty car! How good of an eye for perfection did I have and for detailing? I was contracted for over 5 years to detail the Porsches and Mercedes at the LA Auto show. Unless there is a 100% touchless way to wash a car THOUROUGHLY, you are going to mar the paint to some extent or another. Oh yeah I've never seen ANYTHING to debunk the Cali duster when used properly.

With more than 30 years of owning and using a California Duster (and now a Griot’s) I disagree. When one keeps their car paint always ‘’high beading’’ finish, the duster does remove light surface dust without scratching. If the car’s finish is not protected with a quality wax/polymer then yes, but scaring people away from them altogether is a poor approach.

Levi, Good simple easy to understand video on preventing scratches. I've learnt since watching detailing channels over the past 5 years, that you work in straight lines as all towels including microfiber can cause scratches and swirls. But you used circular motions when buffing off in the initial part of the video. I'm now seeing this more frequently in videos, mainly with finishing polishes. My question is doesn't this circular buffing still cause scratches and swirls even using the highest quality towel and with little or no pressure at all? Cheers from Down Under. Ozz
@adamcoe
@adamcoe 2 года назад
All buffing causes marring on a very small level, and going in straight lines does not prevent this, nor does it make it less visible as some would have you believe. Yes, when swirls get very intense they might be easier to see, but the marring required to demonstrate this is rather extreme. Use a quality soap/wash, don't reuse wash media (ever! the so called 2 bucket method has also been widely debunked), and you can feel free to buff in a circle or any shape you desire. If you have washed properly, then the marks will be essentially invisible. Every towel, no matter what, will leave some kind of tiny mark, it's just a matter of maintaining lubrication on the surface as best you can and using the minimum pressure while still getting the job done.

Waterless wash products use a mixture of detergent and polymers that float up the dirt and cover them with said polymers. They minimise scratches. Nothing you can ever do will completely stop swirl marks unless you have the dough to cover the paint with graphene or something like that.
