You literally hit this subject perfectly! I've always been judged and shit because my favorite band is Crown the Empire but I also listen to Rings of Saturn, Infant Annihilator and all that. You're a big inspiration to me as a vocalist Phil, I scream for a band called Ashes of Abigail. I hope I get to meet you soon! Keep up the amazing work! :D
Eleazar Screams Crown The Empire is the shiiiiiit! TR:ROTR was unbelievably way too good. Of course, there is always space for the blade. Now I'm gonna go sit in a corner naked and tortured while listening to Whitechapel...
I really don't like Falling In Reverse, and I LOVE Chelsea Grin, but that doesn't mean that I don't like Chelsea Grin just because they toured with FIR. Like, it's not my band, it's CG's band and they can tour with whoever the fuck they want.
And I'm sure I'm not the only fan who feels that way. It's really great that you would take the time out and actually do this for your fans. And to hear you've never had a physical confrontation in your life blows me away! I guess it goes to show that when you're on stage or you're writing an album the violence in it is just you doing your job which you do well. If I ever get the chance to meet you I'll be sure to bring the newest JT album out at the time. Cheers and thanks for being awesome.
Thank you Phil! Lots of people do that were they stop listening to a band due to a certain album and I listen to every genre of music so when people hate on me for my taste I really don't care because I like to have a variety of music it's like so what
I enjoyed this Phil. It gave me insight on a person who is a prime example of who you talk about... a person who just talks shit just to talk and get noticed. I also like that attitude of liking who you like with no guilt or consequence, I would argue that if more people were like that, the music industry and the on-line community might be a lot better! Thanks Philybo!
I was just searching around the youtubes and I randomly landed upon this video, and I seen the word "Metal" in it so I wanted to watch it and see what it was about. Now I never heard of you nor watched your stuff, but I have to say I 100% agree with what you said in this video. You toured with Asking Alexandra and I have to say, fare fucking play to you, that's a good achievement as they are a well known band and its a good way to get recognized. Well done!
man i already started liking your band fairly recently but after this vid, i have sooo much respect for you. not many ppl out there get it, and even fewer lay it down the way you just did. i wish this video got more popular because the whole world needs to hear this... even though most of it will ignore it anyways.
I caught this video on another site and i loved your take on life. I hadnt heard your music, so i checked out a couple of videos. I can def see you guys making it into my playlists, but THIS video is what will make me a fan.
I've been fortunate to have never felt negative about my bands, my tastes have changed over time but that has nothing to do with their musicianship. Even if my tastes change away from you guys, I still respect you for how far you've come.
Couldn't agree more, I used to just listen to nothing but heavy music and over the past year I've opened up and I listen to anything and everything from the 80's dissent music acoustic music pretty much every style I be learned to enjoy.
Well said Phil. The whole point of music is to enjoy it, not use it as a tool to feel superior to others or put people down. Thanks for keeping it real. Looking forward to the next album!
As someone who listens to mostly Death Metal (Cannibal Corpse, Dying Fetus, Necrophagist, Death etc) Whitechapel has to be my 2nd favorite band behind Slayer. I get asked why a lot and my reason is that not only do you guys seem really chill, but because you put on one fuck of a show.
agree i seen them at Mayhem and drove 5hrs to see the 2 more times since.. im an overweight guy and i was lucky to meet the band. they were all nice and talked to you they didnt sit there with there head down and just say next. o andAsking Alexandria was at mayhem fest. in my eyes its a great experience to see the diversety that Metal has and im thankful for it. long live metal
I was introduced to Whitechapel and metal in general a year ago and thought it was weird. Now I have every Whitechapel album. Keep up the great work Phil!
There are a lot of people in the comments *still* saying, "Yeah, I agree! But I really can't stand __" or "__ music sucks sooo bad." You know what? Suck off. I enjoy listening to deathcore, rap, hard rock, hair metal, electronic dance music, black metal, jazz, orchestral film scores, and much much else not classified by immediate genre but has great songwriting characteristics and production quality. To the groups/artists that I don't like but other people might, good for you. I personally would not put that song/artist on my iPod, but who am I to judge somebody else's musical tastes, as I would not appreciate someone doing the same for mine? It's too easy to get caught up in your own world then defensively react when somebody gives you a taste of the very thing you have been doing to others. We really just need to support people for them, not their musical tastes, and if they are a musician themselves and you don't prefer their music, so what? Chances are they may just be a good friend to have, regardless if they make porn background music or not.
I agree with you, especially on the bands that put out a "bad" album and touring with the "wrong" bands part. Trying to be independent with a group is still dependance and it's so hypocritical.
Totally agree with what you said.I wish people understand that just because I don't listen to the bands they listen to, that doesn't mean my music taste sucks. There's one time when I list some of my favorite bands and somebody told me that the bands i listen to are 'mainstream crap' and then he/she told me to listen to the bands he/she likes (a lot of them are underground death metal bands)
Alright, I started listening to whitechapel on the day the first album was released. Here we are in 2019 and I still listen to and buy every album. I don’t care if they are popular or not, if I like a band, I like them. I think a lot of people need to watch this video. Phil, you hit this one out of the park, keep going guys!
Ryan Zalewski Well yeah, there might be some stuff that we don't like, but still. I like pop music when it comes from Michael Jackson. He is THE BEST, (in my opinion). The new stuff doesn't really touch me like Michael Jackson. Just.... that old signature pop sound from the 90s that Michael Jackson has, I just love it. I listen to a lot of Whitechapel, Metallica, As I lay dying and so on, as well.
Phil, so im pretty new to Whitechapel but i like what i hear. What i really like is with this channel and the point that u answer to comments, you seem to be reachable for the fans! I mean who ever had the chance to speak, talk or argue with a pretty famous person wich he liks? You already got me man, you are awesome!
Agree with ya 100 percent bro never understood those types of people I love u guys, after the burial, veil of maya, all shall perish, despised icon, ect , but also like select songs from every genre, can't deny what your soul at heart likes
At the end I thought you were going to scream "DIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICK" with some Whitechapel breakdown in the background haha! Great video man, and great message!
Totally agree with this 100%. I don't give a shit what anyone listens to or if they dislike my music. We're all different, just do your own thing. Oh, and everyone loves JT.
i personally wanted to go to one of the shows on the dont pray for us tour because i love the bands that went i like all metal from 80's glam metal to the heaviest most brutal deathcore band you can think of i love music!
I totally agree with people having the "my music is better than your music" attitude, if you don't like the shit I like just say "I don't listen to them" or "I don't care to much for them" don't sit there and say "oh this music is shit dude" and I'm also on you about keeping it to yourself, I'm 18 and never had confrontation with someone else. Love your vids Phil keep it up!!!
Phil, you have a great deal of common sense and maturity. I respect you for being open and saying you love JT haha! I listen to heavy metal and I still like Little THings by One Direction. Chelsea Grin is dealing with the same crap, people hate them because of "Don't Ask Don't Tell". It's pathetic. It's such a great song and such an amazing change-up. They went out of their comfort level and did what THEY wanted to do with THEIR music. Keep doing you, bro. That's what life is really about.
I totally agree with you. I had ppl in the past made fun of a band I was in because we were touring with Drop Dead Gorgeous and Atreyu back in 07. I will say this, I like touring with bands that are different because it brings us to ppl that never heard of us or would ever see us on a normal tour. It sucks though that AA broke up, cuz they are good guys.
Dude when you guys came to Dallas with AA, MIW, InDirections, Chimera and polyphia all of y'all were amazing! I'm the type of person who listens to any type from Whitechapel to Asking Alexandria! I dont judge people because they listen to different bands!
I really hope the thing you're talking about is you doing a rap album. You've always been an amazing vocalist. Your speed and your articulation is unmatched in the world of "metal" or whatever genre you'd like to label it as. I think rap would be a great project for you to pursue. But that's just my opinion.
A lot of good points made. I definitely gained some respect for Phil. The only problem I have is with the term "haters', mainly because of how some people use it. For example, when people really do have legit reasons for disliking a certain artist, they're called a hater and their opinion is completely tossed out the window. The term "hater" is usually just what people call each other when they don't want to listen to someone else's opinion, even if they make valid points. Just my thoughts.
I'm a fan of all metal genres. I like to broaden my taste be it Megadeth or Suicide Silence, but what I don't get is people who say that it's unheard of or impossible to like two completely different bands and get ripped on for liking one or the other. Respect to you, Phil. It's sad that most of the metal community just happens to be ignorant about these trivial matters. :\
The worse are definitely those who dislike an artist -or pretend that they do- because it got mainstream. Another clear example is Skrillex and the new wave of dubstep. Phil described it perfectly; it's just a matter of pride and social acceptance. It's a childs game. Just the same way kids seek an own identity by joining social movements. In fact, most of those movements have always been linked to music (punk, heavy, rapper, goth, etc.).
I personally prefer to see bands tour with other bands who they may not typically be associated with because it allows people to be exposed to a wider variety of music, as Phil said. Not only that, that interaction is what causes bands to evolve and change. I know there are always the original underground followers of the band, but I personally like seeing bands evolve. If every album sounded the same from a band, it would get boring. I see nothing wrong with evolution and growth in a band.
FUCKING THANK YOU! I jam to JT too, music is music. It's something to enjoy, ive even dealt with haters. It's just how it is and i kick back, brush off my shoulders.
No way is this phill!? How have I not found this channel before now! I totally agree with everthing you said here, and JT is a brilliant artist as far as chart music goes.
Everything you said in that video is spot on man,,,,,end of the day, music is music. You can't judge someone or hate someone just for what they like or how they dress even. The world would be pretty boring if everyone was into the same stuff. Like Squidward from Spongebob when he went and find his own kind and they all did the same stuff.
I like Nu-Metal, Metalcore, Death Metal, Melodic Metalcore, Deathcore, Heavy Thrash, Rap Metal, a bit of Black Metal, Punk Rock, Hardcore, Post-hardcore, Power Metal, Alternative Rock/Metal, Hard Rock, Grunge, Hardcore Punk, Melodic Hardcore, Industrial Metal, Rap, a bit of Dubstep, bit of Drum and Bass, a bit of RnB, etc I don't think people should be limited to particular genres/sub-genres, I have no idea what label would be used to describe my music
I'll be perfectly honest, I used to absolutely hate Whitechapel. Then I went to a concert where you guys were playing and at the time I was thinking wow I really have to listen to these guys? However, after hearing you guys live your vocal talent impressed me so much that I gave your music a second chance and you're now my favorite band. I think people don't realize that opinions can change and all it requires is you to be more open minded towards and subject (or band in this case)
that thing you said about bands getting popular from the underground, thats just like AFI's fanbase. a LOT of fans are put down if they dont like their pre-1998 stuff, but thats only about half of their music! they have a huge variety of style in their music, yet the fanbase can sometimes be divided with a chalk line. its sad, i like all their stuff, and i like whitechapel, and i like deadmau5 and Sirah. music is great guys, appreciate it all
Phil you are so right. much respect to you, man. On a note tho. when someone bashes the bands i like, i have to fight back. for example. i was blaring some of Mastodons new stuff at work (i work in a local steak house) and some kid was saying how they suck and they couldnt understand they lyrics. so fucking what? they still cant appreciate the music talent of the band? im sorry its not mainsteam lil fuckin wayne or some rap. the same thing happened when i was listening to Scar Symmetry.
Thanks for this Phil me and you have yhe same mentality my parents say I'm anti social and shy but I'm not I'm just calm and don't let any stress me out in stupid bullshit
You are my influence man. I didn't get to meet you at the brothers of brutality meet and greet on Jan 12 at San Antonio but I hope one day we can just sit down and just chat as two individuals. Hopefully.... hopefully.
Good shit, Phil. Chelsea Grin is a great example of this. I've heard so many people talk shit about how they think CG sucks now because Evolve and how they stopped listening to them just because of an EP that only had, like, 5 fucking songs. Keep up the vids and the music!
The only thing I don't like about the underground bands getting big and popular is the one on one interaction you get at small shows. But I would rather have them get bigger and make more music live their dreams
I think thats stupid when someone stops listening to a band due to publicity. I genuinely feel happy when a band I like makes it big, it's a good thing for a band you like.
I like AA, Whitechapel, Disturbed (favorite band), Johnny Cash, Eminem. It doesn't matter on your music. Mature up. Thanks Phil for the video. Your rants/opinions are always true.
Phil... You are a huge inspiration to me. To pursue music. And you kickass at COD! I enjoy doing vocals to Possession.(: Bottom line, I hope to meet you some day. Whether it be at a concert, or in a store. You seem like a cool guy. No homo(;
Today I've seen this video + the video about the last Whitechapel tour with AA. These two video make me think a lot. Phil, Alex, Ben S., Gabe, Zach and Ben H. you're fucking inspirational ! I hope I'll be able to meet you one day guys ! Mentally and musically you're really inspirational guys, I like your vision of the things, you know what I mean hehe :D
