My name is Carson Sleep, I’m 23 years old and am a 6th generation rancher on the Sleep Ranch.
Our ranch is located in the Northern Black Hills on the South Dakota/ Wyoming border where my family settled and started ranching in 1883.
I work alongside my parents, Jeff and Jodi, our ranch hand, Jaques, and my wife, Damaris who also works as a nurse in town. We have friends and family who come along very frequently as well!
We run a cow/calf operation where we summer our cattle on the Black Hills National Forest and winter them in the foothills of the Black Hills. We also have a backgrounding feedlot, and grow alfalfa and grass hay.
To God be the Glory

Great video, when I saw your Uncle Gary in the video I remembered his limerick from when you brought the cows down in the snowstorm. I was thinking whether he would have another one for us. Tell your Uncle Gary thanks, very talented man. Loved the footage of your Niece Millie and good old Trump. It is great that they moved closer to spend time on the ranch more often. Also thanks for the update on the bull. Can't imagine how difficult it was to film and get Trump up that steep incline, with the creek and rocks, thanks for the great footage.

Hi Carson, again nice to see how your family runs your country. You spend a fair amount of time in the saddle moving stock. Also your expenditure on road transport must add up moving stock to and from pastures?Your stock trucks are different to ours. At the most our trucks can only be 45 feet long, I think yours are over 50 feet. We have single decks and double decks, which can then be made into road trains max size is 3 double decks equals 6 by 45-foot decks. On this road train we can load around 34 steers/deck by 6 decks, total 204 steers that weigh 320 kgs live (700lbs), I know this as we loaded that number today to send for sale. I like to work on around 11,000 kgs per deck for grower cattle and 12,000 kgs per deck prime cattle. We have to move over fairly long distances, today was a bit over 400 k (250 M). Some moves though can be between my properties 1,100 miles. Good result for sale stock today the steers averaged around AUD$1,700. We were happy with that as they were Brahman steers. We do also have Charolaos cross and Brangus steers, which usually make more than the Brahman steers. What sort of $s are you getting now, and is that a good price. Sorry about the long comment. From Down Under.
@sleepranch
@sleepranch 2 года назад
Hey CSR, I wonder why the trailers are different. Yes it does add up especially with the way our economy is now, freight can be pretty spendy. I’m glad you guys got some good prices for your steers! I’m sure they looked great! I think the last group of steers we sold we got about $150/cwt but that was a couple months ago. Those prices are better than they have been for a couple years but still not extravagant! Take care down under! I like hearing from you guys!

The pasture where you brought the cows little over 1,700 Acres are you usually putting the cows on a pasture at about 33 to 35 acres per head?

HaHa! Loved the tire limerick from Uncle Gary. We have to find some things to giggle about on long days with hard work...and realizing you dont have a spare tire with you. LOL! Sure looking great out there on pastures in your areas. Im sure you saw the horrendous flooding up here in the Yellowstone area and yup, that's right where we are. Been a hard go for us and our fellow Montana ranch families. We have all tried to help each other out but wow... we've really been struggling to get through this time. Blessings and best wishes to you and all the family

I watched this video twice just verify my thinking. Trump is acting like my gelding that was going blind on the right. He started to be unsure of is surroundings and being separated from is field mate. He depended on their eyes. Please take notes on how he is acting. Love watching you guys move cows the old ways but unfortunately we have to move them the rest of the way by modern means. I feel sorry for the bull. He may have an infection from is broken hammer. I'm sure things will get better. Your Uncle Gary is very talent. He should write is poems down even if they are short or long. And later down the road put them in a book and print it. These are treasures to family. I had a friend much older them and wrote poems of her life on the farm not only family. Animals , machinery, and buildings as well. I had a copy of her three books of 25 pages. But someone stole them. I think it marvelous how in such a short time he came up with rhyme. Glad you all got home ok. Never apologize about the wind. It show use that life is not just perfection. Also tells us the environment that you work in. Milly is such a doll. Can't wait to see her have her own pony herding cattle. God Bless you and your family and Jac an his family and all the truckers. Be safe truckers you are our backbone to life.

Hey Carson, Another great video of your operation and the stunning country side. I'm really surprised that the calves don't pair up better with their mother's when moved, my pastures are way smaller here in Wisconsin and when I change pastures the calves are stuck like glue to the cows. The pastures at home your moving off of do you let the grass just grow back and save that for when you wean calves in the fall?
@sleepranch
@sleepranch 2 года назад
Hey Jeff, ya I’m not sure why they take longer to pair up. These pastures that we graze in the spring we won’t graze again until next spring! We have some different pastures that we put them in the fall. How do you guys do it?
@jeffmorrissette3205

@@sleepranch once breeding is done ( I breed all AI)there's no cattle at my home ranch there in the leased land I have and I usually take a crop of grass off for hay and then I have really nice grass when I wean calves labor day weekend.
