Eastern State Penitentiary is known to be one of the most haunted and oldest prisions to date. Opened in 1829, this was known as the most expensive prison every built in America at that time. It even housed the famous american gangster, Al Capone. It closed in 1971 and is now owned by eastern state preservation group. Besides punishing the criminals inside it walls, it also was created to move the criminal toward spiritual reflection and change. The method was a Quaker-inspired system of isolation from other prisoners, with labor. The early system was strict. To prevent distraction, knowledge of the building, and even mild interaction with guards, inmates were hooded whenever they were outside their cells. But the proponents of the system believed strongly that the criminals, exposed, in silence, to thoughts of their behavior and the ugliness of their crimes, would become genuinely penitent. Thus the new word, penitentiary. Source: www.easternstate.org\

I thought this whole series was exceptionally well done Steve. It was like watching an awesome thirty minute documentary but without the commercials. And absolutely beautiful photos at the conclusion! Great job!!

Excellent 3 part series!! Your photography was wonderful, really took you back in time. I remember when GH's went there, but of course it was at night. With your vids & photos, we were able to see so much more. Great job!!:)

Amazing photos and video . I cant believe that a prison like that existed until the 1970s Some of the cells looked like dungeons .

Yes tiki, if you ever in the philly area, this is a must go to. This was the first time there and I though that since it open to the public for tours it be boring and they cleaned it up to much but I was wrong they did an excellent job of leaving all the decay this place has. I spent a good 4 hours there

cool. Thanks for the info. It really makes you think that life would suck in a space as big as a small car. Great concept to the artist who ever you are.

There is a sign that says artist won competition and were able to put a piece of art in the cells. The car symbolizes the prisoners being stripped of their identity and locked away.

Thank You. Yea we were all wondering the same. Not sure, maybe like you said it showing how big the cell is by using something we use everyday pretty much.

OMG Steve that was an adventure and a half! That was amazing! Al Capone's cell was luxurious compared to the rest! That was very interesting that a tree could grow like that! Thank you so much for sharing this! Can you imagine being a prisoner back then? A common thief locked up with a bunch of murderers. I can't even begin to imagine what prison life was like back then!!! I loved the watch tower~! Pretty scary actually!

I went to that place a couple of months ago with few students in my high school. It was suppose to just be a trip for touring colleges but my college adviser choose to have some fun and go to this place. Some section you went to we didnt hardly go to. We had a tour guide that was boring me just telling us about when the prison was built but not the crazy inmates stories. It was warm that day but freezing inside the prison 0.0.
@AbandonedSteve
@AbandonedSteve 10 лет назад
yea we did not do a tour guide. They have these headset devices you can take with you if you want to tour yourself. We were more interested in pictures so we roamed the place without a guide. It is much better in my opinion.

I've been there once, it's burned into my memory, it was the number one most creepy place i'veever been , and i've been in some crazy places in Norway and the Netherlands, i also remember walking into a cell forgetting how low the doors were, and i smashed my head on the top of the door, , i stillhave very crazy dreams about that place

Myferrets18 if you have a weak immune system or lung issues, it is not recommended. They do clean out the asbestos and other stuff as they have to in order for it to be a public place to visit.
