Literally found out about this game yesterday and immediately fell in love with the art style. Been looking for something to hold me over since Silksong seems like an out of touch dream right now. So happy you guys did a video on it, keep up the good work you two!
Thoughts on the game? Big hollow knight fan and this piqued my interest. I just finished Monster Boy, which was an great metroidvania. Related to roguelikes , I loved Hades but didn’t really enjoy Dead Cells
The quick movement, weapons, perks and penalties plus the continuous narrative makes this a perfect side scroller and rogue lite mix. It’s like side scrolling Hades. Everything is smooth and the use of muted colors is spot on. Hope the re-playability value is long does it have something like multiple endings or new game plus? Hope so. Maybe some dlc planned. Either way excellent reviews lads!
Finally! I’ve been waiting on this game since I saw the first trailer. Big fan of roguelikes. The gameplay looks super fun, especially the multiple weapons and combinations of attacks. But the biggest sell for me is the art style, it looks absolutely beautiful!
This game has been on my radar since I saw it announced. As I wrote before I've never played a rogue-like, but this one seems fun and seems to have at least some kind of story to help getting a feeling of progression, so I'm putting it on my wishlist. Thanks for the video, it definitely helped me make a decision.
Great looking game, which feels like hollow knight and dead cells had a baby. Thanks for the awesome review once again, hoping to see more games like this on switch.
This channel has become my main go to place when I want to know more about a game for the switch! Saw this game on steam and got interested if it was on the switch and here I am. Thanks for the hard work guys! Now those switch controllers looked interesting 🤔
I'm definitely burnt out on this genre but this one looks like a breath of fresh air. I'm definitely interested in this game, and where the heck is Silk Song? It just vanished.
On point, I was just sitting down to watch some videos and burn some time for myself before keep moving with my day, and switchup notification comes out. 🎉🎉🎉🎉
60fps with the that monochrome look, on the OLED screen?! This game looks amazing. Going to wait for a sale unfortunately. Appreciate the review, fellas.
This looks so sleek and beautiful but I immediately fell in love with the story set up as well. I honestly love a dash of good story mixed my HK / StS style Metroidvanias to keep me hooked along the way. Makes the grind all the more bearable 😂 Thanks for the review fella’s!!!
Solid review. I've been putting in some time since the game dropped on Switch, and overall am really enjoying myself. That said, the game really could do a better job explaining all of the mechanics. The roguelite genre is a personal favorite, but even so I found myself having to look up at least half a dozen things in order to get a feel for how all of the systems work. Also, the contract system you mentioned is definitely *not* optional or something you can completely ignore, as you are forced to choose at least one contract before heading out on each run. You are, however, given an option in terms of which contract you want to sign, which often relates to how much risk you want to take. It's an interesting way of adding smaller missions to the game, but I don't really care for it that much, as (at least so far) the gains feel relatively small in relation to the rest of the run. Overall, I really do like this game, and can see myself putting in quite a few hours. Getting over some of the initial confusion was a tad annoying, but in the end the gameplay feels well worth the time I spent figuring things out. Hopefully the devs will revisit the tutorial in the future so new players won't have to go online to learn the basics, but even as is, it's still a solid game. It won't be replacing Dead Cells for me anytime soon, but then again, that would be awfully difficult to do, haha.
From watching the game in early access the dev team seems very open to ideas and listening to the players. There’s been several patches and updates. So I’m sure they’ll add some more to it before it’s over. One of the Dead Cells designers I believe is coaching or helping them in some way. So hopefully he’ll push them in the patch and dlc area
@@geoffpolk That's awesome. If one of the Dead Cells devs is indeed helping out, that gives me even more hope for this game becoming a long term gem. Appreciate the extra info!
I really like how there are so many cartoons to play now than just Cuphead. I'd watch a have a nice death tv series based on the cool animation style alone!
I've had my eyes on this game for over a year now. It always looked nice for me. The artstyle is unique, the gameplay looks fun and seems like it also has a fun story. It also looks like it runs amazingly in the switch. The devs did a great job optimizing it.
I've been playing all day, and its soooo good. The combat is so responsive and satisfying, it has a lot of build potential and depth. So hyped to keep playing and see how the game evolves.
@@nicojan im liking it more than dead cells, the combat feels more responsive and accurate. Obviously dead cells has much more content when it comes to weapons and places (it has years of dlc and free updates) buuut here each main weapon version is super unique, and each spell and secondary weapon has its own fury attack. Also something i didn't particularly like about deadcells its the character build system, here its way better in my opinion. You can invest in 3 categories ( just like desd cells) but here they call them curses, and each level comed with a random perk from that category ( in dead cells you improve your color specific pasive and more hp) , in have a nice death you build a skill tree for each run and its much more viable mix the 3 categories for build purposes, in dead cells you just went full on one category color making it less fun in my opinion. The leveld are muuch smaller too, you have like 6 small floors for each world and they are really fast to complete, and at the end of the small flor, you can choose what you think its gonna fit best with your build like Hades but more options. In dead cells levels are huge sometimes. I would like to see curse chests like in dead cells too, maybe there are, i have played 9 hours already and it seems i have a ton more ahead. Hope iit helps!
@@mr.davisreviews9372 they are one of the best parts in my opinion! The mini bosses and the bosses are beautifly animated, also they are hard 😂 like maybe im not that good but they hit like a truck! When i build a damage run, and i have low maxhealth, if they hit me 2 o or 3 times im done. They also have diferent versions, i dont know if all of them but i saw a couple. But yeah bosses rule. I hope theres a boss rush mode.
@@MoiBlackInk awesome, thanks for the write-up! I'm sorry if I'm comparing it to one of the big ones, it's just that all I've played in that style is Dead Cells and Hades. Ok terms of style and progression it looks maybe closer to Hades (really excited for Hades II btw!!!), at least in terms of theme and style. Either way it's kind of taking me by surprise, I really didn't expect something that polished. Looks amazing.
Great video, I've been playing this to 'death' since the initial pc early access release, it has turned out to be a fantastic game. I picked it up on switch to play it portable and have had some pretty big frame drops, they come after just leaving elevators on certain levels and when you get trapped in the mini wave fight areas, sometimes it really lags, I hope so much that this gets fixed as its a taint on an otherwise incredible game.
Sweet! I'm glad to hear that it runs pretty good and that the fonts aren't as tiny as in other games. I will try to get it either next month or when on sale... Whatever happens first.
I remember when my friend who worked on the art for this game told me about their project back in the day. So glad to see it on Switch finally. Too bad he couldn't hook me up with a Switch copy 😬
I have had 6 runs so far. My last one I beat Waldo and got I think 3 rooms into the next area. Waldo and the mini bosses are such a step up from Brad in difficulty, even the mini bosses in area 1 are tougher than Brad so they give you an option for more risk more reward right away. My most played rouge lites are Dead Cells and Skul, I got over 500 hours between the two of them. This seems to have taken the best parts from both so far and has it's own things as well. While the weapons and spell systems are more like Dead Cells in form/acquisition, in function they act more like in Skul where sometimes it can really benefit you to mostly forget your main attack and use your alt attacks more just using your basic attacks if alts are not available or just to start combos/keep them going. I rarely ever preoder digital games because why the hell would I but I was so excited for this and because of the slightly larger file size at 5 gb I preordered and downloaded it last week. I started it up and the first level loaded and OMG what have I done I thought as the level streamed in it was like 10 fps but as soon as I gained control it's silky smooth. Quite a scare for a second there though. Great game so far with a really good feeling of progression. With Dead Cells and Skul already just having huge updates plus the release of this game my poor physical copy of Metroid Prime remastered hasn't been opened yet. Three months in and already so much gaming goodness.
Roguelikes are my cup of tea and ever since I saw this on Direct, I knew it's the perfect game to itch that Roguelike addiction (and of course the perfect game to add in my never-ending backlog). Very smooth and sleek gameplay indeed and that art style are just *chef kisses*
I've been playing since yesterday morning. Excellent game. Very like Dead Cells (in its fluidity and some gameplay systems) and it's not impossibly hard either. Worth a pickup! (FYI that elevator music is my current phone ringtone too...) 🙂
Oh that’s good that the game acknowledges your runs and previous attempts. That’s a nice touch that helps it not feel so repetitive. I just played Dead Cells again yesterday for the first time in years and this is reminding me of that. Weird health system!! Nothing to rush out and buy but I would check out a demo.
Been waiting for this game for so long. You have no idea how many times I though about buying this on pc and just get over it, but I honestly think that they playing this on a mobile console is the optimal way for playing
I don't know that I've identified a game so immediately to suit me. I loved Skul and Little Nioh and this feels in that wheelhouse... obviously with its own uniqueness. I've been watching this game throughout development so I'm ready to dive in... Yet life is less willing to allow me the time. So perhaps in future! I keep showing peeps this game to spread awareness for support since I'm not buying it yet.
Oof, it’s been a while since I’ve posted on y’all’s videos (although have been watching and keeping up). Life can get busy sometimes, but it seems death is even more busy. Can’t wait to check it out
Never been a fan of these types of games where if you die, you have to start again....but the art style and idea of this game is really appealing and might finally sway me!
Can you save mid game or in stages? were you can continue without having the game always start the beginning because things happen between trying to play the game fully.
I feel like this is exactly the game that fills the hole Silksong has made. Wonderful review as always lads, much appreciate it as always and love the vibes! 🤝🏻🤙🏻
Been looking forward to this for a while now! Was a bit deflated after seeing some negative reviews but wanted to wait on this review before purchasing
@@coreycarnegie5990 I’ve only been playing for a short time. But from the little I’ve seen and from some videos I’ve watched there’s a good amount of stuff and story here
@@coreycarnegie5990 no problem. Glad to help. If you’re wondering. Retromation, Beelz, and Playframe have great let’s plays that show off a lot of gameplay. Yeah I wouldn’t listen to them. It’s a lot of fun so far. The combat is enough to buy it lol. It’s very fast paced. Definitely in the Dead Cells vein big time
The art looks absolutely gorgeous! That’ll be the third game added to the backlog this week; I need to stop watching these videos for a week or two to recover😅
Not my style of art or genre as much but, the animation looks quite good and the mechanics sound thoughtful. I think fans of this style of game will have a lot of fun here.
I wish they’d make some things permanent like in hades you can Atleast choose which weapon you’d start with. And there’s no way to permanently upgrade any shops so after every run it’s literally a fresh start from 0
Hi Mark and Glen, sorry for bringing this here but I need to know if I am being scammed. I got an email from you saying that I won the giveaway from this video. I have been talking to “someone” on WhatsApp saying that I need to donate some money in order to you to send me that giveaway. Is this normal procedure from you? Or it’s just someone scamming me? Cheers
Bought it and played it in like the first hour it dropped. Performance is solid on Switch save for frame drops at the start of each map. Load times are a little rough too. But I’m sure they can improve. Well worth the purchase if you like the genre otherwise
@Seven Syns haha yeah I feel you, dead cells really burnt me out on the genre at least hades has new spoken dialogue every time you return to base and you can mod the furnishings
I've been looking forward to this game, and I'm so glad to hear it's a good port. I absolutely LOVE the art style. Will definitely be picking this up soon. One question I did have was did you encounter any major bugs?
I want it but have to hold off for the time being. I have 3 games to buy in April and it just isn’t in the budget right now. You could help ya boi out tho 😁
I'm not sure who put this on my radar a a year or so ago but I've been really excited for this one. Glad to see it looks like I'm really going to enjoy it
I’ve been a late adopter of Dead Cells, I’m loving that and really enjoying the rogue lite game format atm. Then I saw this one (thanks gents 😊) and it also looks awesome!
Always like how you and the team review switch games, I'm always looking out for a new game to play from time to time, and you guys help on that decision. Also, this looks like some fun to add to the collection sometime in the future.
Got it on their recent sale. So far, pretty good. Controls seems responsive and fluid for the most parts. There seems to be a bit of input lag here and there though. Not a fan of the obtuse penalty system. "Remove minimap", "Hide HUD", etc. are such shitty penalties that kills the fun of the game. Penalty should be removed altogether or it should be temporary. Like maybe "Take 20% more damage. Removed after 20 kills." Overall, a decent 3/5. Needs more work but almost worth it at sale price (16.99). $15 would be the perfect spot for this game.
This is a Rogue like i've had my eye on since I firat saw it. Love the art style and the character Death himself. Hoping to get this for a b-day later next month
Bought deaths door (and 100%), dead cells and Celeste becouse of you, Guys. really like the reviews, hopefully this game will satisfy My needs! It must have taking such a long time to Make this game, seems good and long! Oh and I also bought hades! I have 500 runs in that game/390 hours
Oh my Gideon! This game looks absolutely gorgeous. It is a must-buy for me. I love your review videos because of their honesty and unbiased take. But there would've been nothing you guys could've said to stop me from getting this.
Really cool concept from the get go, and the game looks very good. I think I got burned from these kind of games from playing Dead Cells, but this might be the mix up I need to get back into the fray! Thank you for the review, as always!
@@Cpt.CoffinNails Fair question! I really enjoyed Dead Cells, don't get me wrong, but after getting 2 cells... I came to a dead stop in progression. I spent maybe 10 hours combined in 0 and 1 cells, and around 50 in 2 cells. I felt I wasn't going any further, and so many hours with virtually no change... I started to not enjoy playing. But yeah, I know that's not the game's fault, and the game has change a ton since then. Maybe it deserves a second chance, but that's what I mean by "burned". Not that I was disappointed, but literally like burnt out of the game.
