I think Purdy's ability to fake the throw or passes is a talent in itself, not many QBs can do that and if you watch the replay, he really fool the defenders into running a certain direction. His precision passes are due to his foot planting much quicker than any QBs I seen on the 49ers roster. His readiness and always in a position to pass means his has more time to see the field, that's #1. #2, his ability to avoid sack is much better than Jimmy G or even Trey Lance. Those are the three qualities 49ers have been searching for in a QB: Precision passes, ability to avoid sack to extend play (which mean he has good pocket presence) and ability to run.

He's 23 & I am continuously troubled by the notion that *NFL coaches* build up preconceived notions about a player's ability that stem from what they think they've seen before that age. Justin Fields has for the first time ever run so much in a game he got sore. Trevor Lawrence still has some trouble remembering to protect the football when running. The problem is nearly always the same: the vast majority of coaches have a worse than useless actually destructive Preconceived Notion of exactly what all QBs should look like, are in *denial that* they have such a thing, then look at every QB through that PN anyway. A great analogy in baseball would be Mike Schmidt. He was a terrible batting practice hitter so this even affected how they saw him *defensively.* They thought "light hitter" ergo second-baseman. Preconceived Notions. He didn't even *try* to get the 3rd-baseman job. As soon as he started hitting HRs, they assumed he was a 3rd-baseman, not a 2nd-baseman. It's a damned good thing he had a great arm too. With Purdy, we're all jumping on this bandwagon because of where he was picked in the draft? Wtf? We haven't seen him under duress at all yet. He has a better o-line than most QBs, _WAY_ better offensive ball-carriers than most teams & one of the élite TEs. Justin Fields has been doing more with less (not consistently, I'm aware) & is still doubted by many. So again, your PNs are warping how you view him. It's too early to tell much, but I'm glad we're getting to see this. Just remember that this is San-Fran: not Cleveland, not Indianapolis, not Las Vegas. Still, I can see why this is happening. There are VERY few good QB stories this season where the QB *AND the team* are doing well. We could'a had this with Bailey Zappe, but Bellicheck is Too Proud to go against _HIS_ PNs, so we (& Zappe) got shafted out of that. Michael White has been given the chance too late, as well as Dobbs in Tennessee.
@encinobalboa

@@choosecarefully408 HC does not hold players back. HC calls plays based on what the player can do. Fields can't see the field and is slow to make reads which is why he is an unproductive passer. The right way to handle Fields is to reduce the playbook. Trevor lost a year to Urban and has improved with Pederson and is beginning to live up to his number one overall pick. Trevor can process so the playbook is expanding. Mike Schmidt is a baseball player. WTF. There is no evidence whatsoever that he would not have had the same production at 2nd base.

@@encinobalboa Much too reading comprehension your strong suit not, eh? Sorry, but all you're doing is saying "nuh-unh" without qualifying it. The Bears adjusted One Thing & their entire offense started scoring 30+ instead of 20-. Yes, we can still see Fields miss passes *with the Bears* but guess what? He _didn't_ miss them in college. That's why he got drafted so high. Kirk Cousins threw 2 INTs against Indy while Justin Jefferson was on the bench. The replacement receiver didn't run the route correctly. Receivers. The Bears have possibly The Worst collection of receivers in the league. 2) I have _always_ been able to abandon the teachings of anyone I knew was wrong. Coaching isn't *mind control.* Lawrence dropped two of four fumbles against the Eagles without anyone even touching him. No one _taught_ him to forget about the damned football. Reread why the analogy of Mike Schmidt is important or don't. But you not getting it doesn't mean it's not apt.

I'm not near ready to crown Purdy yet, but it's hard to argue that the offense doesn't look different with him running it. Purdy is willing to throw outside the numbers and actually looks first for the big play deep. Those are things Jimmy rarely ever did. Plus, Purdy has displayed quite a bit more mobility than Garoppolo. He's saved himself in instances that would have likely been sacks for Garoppolo. He seems to play better under duress. Also, Jimmy is known to make at least 2 throws a game that leaves you scratching your head. Despite his lack of NFL experience, we haven't really seen that from Purdy....yet. Which brings up the point in that Purdy could just be getting started. Jimmy has all but reached his ceiling. There are fans and even local analysts who watch far more 49ers tape than the average fan who say it appears as if Kyle Shanahan actually trusts Brock Purdy more than he ever did Jimmy G. As a 49ers fan, I've watched every single game, for years. I saw Kyle with backup QBs before. They had some success, but looked panicked half the time. Anyone who says this is about Kyle's offense needs to explain why it didn't look like that with all of those other backup QBs, or even the starters. Because this is looking better than Jimmy. It felt like Kyle has been more aggressive with his play calling. At first I thought he just decided to go for it since they had nothing to lose, with a 7th round rookie QB, but a lot of those play calls were there with Jimmy as well. It has more to do with CMC really, Jimmy looked much better in the 4 games he with with CMC starting. From week to week, Kyle has figured out more things he can do with his new weapon. Switching him and Kittle is one of those new things. If Kyle keeps up these play design/calls, and the defense keeps playing like the #1 defense they are, it will be hard to beat this team in the next 6 games btw, that one INT in the Miami game was on 4th down. If you don't complete the pass, the next best thing is an interception. An incompletion or a sack means better field position. It was a good decision, he gave his guy a shot and it was basically like a short punt. I've seen a lot of QBs throw it away or take a sack in that situation.

I'm thinkin there is gonna be an 80s rematch for the SB this year. The niners are by far the most complete team in the league. I just hope he doesn't get Nick Foles-ed after coming in and playing so good and get traded to some crap team expecting him to pull off some miraculous turn around of their entire franchise.

As a former ISU student during Purdy’s entire career who watched almost every game, I understood why he was a 7th round pick. He used to be a 1 read QB who’d stare down receivers and lacked in arm talent. Now though, his field sense has improved considerably and even though I still think the arm strength is suspect, he’s improved in basically every area and everyone associated with the cyclones is so excited for him

He is surprisingly nifty in the pocket with excellent feet, and has seemingly caught up to the NFL game really quickly. While we've seen other flash-in-the-pans before, I think this kind of early success can lead to long term excellence- if the Niners handle and develop him correctly. I never saw him in college, and can only imagine that his size held back his draft stock.

I watched him on the Shrine Bowl and I saw a career backup like Case Keenum or Brian Hoyer at best. When I watched him enter and dominate the Dolphins and Bucs I couldn't believe it was the same kid. I give tons of credit to Shanahan and Griese for coaching up this kid. I have to remind myself he is a rookie every time I see him composed against pressure which is typically a killer for rookies.

Honestly, Bill Walsh was a master at taking QB who were not seen as much & making them something. Montana was a 3rd round pick, but Walsh saw something. The system, Walsh's & the Shanahan's is designed for the QB to be a success if he can execute. It's not an accident that Shanahan's dad ran the Niners O before taking the HC job at DEN. Griese was brought in for Lance but, obviously, all the QB benefited. Just my two cents as an SF native who got to watch Walsh at Stanford then with the Niners.

Really nice film breakdown. Recurring theme with Purdy are those quick feet, it’s impossible to predict his release point. I’m seeing Roger Staubach, not a true runner but a scrambler who can throw from anywhere and any posture. Good release isn’t as elite as Garoppolo, but he’s in trouble less often.

Coming in late... it's surprising that like many other benchers who've been given the opportunity, he hasn't succumbed to the pressure and fallen apart. It's obvious he's confident in his ability and in his teammates ability to move the ball in tandem with one another. Success breeds success... so coming out strong helped to solidify his teams trust in him that he could perform.. as well as his trust in himself. Nice to see a fella, that not much was expected from... Shine. Now it's just a matter of facing better defense teams... and avoiding injury. Then we'll know that he's made of. Here's to hoping his career doesn't get snuffed out just as he's gotten noticed in the bigs.
