Still working on the old Paramount, Calvin needs wheels. The old bike came with two different sets, but will they be good enough to ride? Calvin searches the rims, hubs, and spokes to find the answer in this week's Tech Tuesday!

That Suntour looks in good condition and purrs nicely. Gets my vote.

Those Shimano Dura Ace freewheels were so well made. The grease might be a little sticky from age, but I bet that the bearings and races are in fine shape. Pull it apart and give everything a solvent bath, then re-pack with fresh grease. That would make a great video!

Probably the one with the largest usable low sprocket. That's what my customers tend to ask for.

That's the Maillard 6-speed 13-24 cassette.
@Frank-mn4hx
@Frank-mn4hx 11 месяцев назад
I would say Maillard 6-speed. The 13-24 cassette is the one from my choice. Because this freewheel has the biggest range. The jumps between gears can be a little big but, the lower 24 teeth sprocket makes it easier to climb up a hill.

I feel like Grandpa Simpson watching this thing. This is the stuff I lived for in high school in the 70's. We wouldn't even talk to you if you rode clinchers. I'd go with the 24, but that's just me. All the cool kids rode 21's.

I had a couple of those Regina CX give up the ghost with very little use. I'd opt for the Suntour if you can live with the 22t.

I would go with the Sun Tour 7 speed 13-22. I still have my collection of freewheels, including a SunTour 6 speed 13-18, a Sachs 7 speed 12-18, a Shimano Dura Ace 7 speed 12-19, a Sachs 7 speed 13-24, and two Sachs 8 speed freewheels (yes 8 speed) a 12-21, and a 12-23. I also have a few worn out Sachs 7 speed 13-21's that I would use for training. Those 8 speed freewheels would go on a special Sachs 8 speed hub, that was made for those freewheels. Sachs freewheels (7 & 8 speed) were spaced to work well with Campy 8 speed Ergo levers. Back when I was younger, I was able to Big-ring a 13-21 over all sorts of rolling hills. Those were the days. PS. At least none of the rear wheels had cracks at the eyelets.

The 7sp Suntour would be my tip for the racewheels. Those were strong and shifted great. And either the Shimano or the 13-21 Maillard for the trainer. No good having climbing gears in training - suffering makes power 💪 😈

Great video series Calvin, enjoying it a lot, thank you. I got a chance to watch Regina freewheels being made on a visit for cycling journalists to the factory in 1990. It was part amazing and part hilarious. They had one of the most convoluted contraptions I have ever seen in a factory. It was a giant round platform with an articulated arm. Around the platform were the freehwheel bodies and cogs. The arm would reach out, pick up the parts and place them onto the freehwheel, first the body was assembled and then the freewheel cogs went on. The funny part was how they loaded the ball bearings when assembling the body. A little metal chute dropped down aimed at the bearing race and the bearings came rolling down it. Once the race was full the bearings kept coming down the chute going all over the place until a little gate on the chute closed. I finally understood why so many Regina freewheels we sold and rode had problems. Suffice to say that you're probably best off choosing one of the other brands 🤣

Any reason Calvin didn't name the manufacturer of the hubs (just called them "legendary")? Pretty sure they're Campagnolo.

Shimano's Uniglide freewheel (and chain) shifted far more accurately than others; together they provided almost index shifting level performance. I have used Suntour, Regina, and Maillard freewheels (along with Suntour, Sedisport, and Regina chains) and they almost all required overshifting (pull back and trim forward) to some degree, but Shimano just went bang into gear faster and smoother. Of course the derailleurs used factored into the performance as well. That said, if the bike is Campy equipped, I would go for the Regina CX, just to keep it all Italian.

Regina Oreo with Campy hubs. It’s a match made in bicycle heaven. As long as it freewheels reasonably well who cares about a bit of noise. This bikes not meant for coasting anyway.

Hi Calvin. Great videos keep them coming. I'm running Mavic cosmic SR wheels with R2R carbon spokes, the wheels are about 10 or 11 years old. I'll try to find out the spoke tension of the back wheel drive side. Can you help me please.

Suntour every time: streets ahead of every other make in bearing quality & concentricity. BTW: even 'really good' aluminium nipples fall apart with corrosion and stress (often induced by their galvanic bonding to the spokes, and hamfisted attempts to turn/remove them with badly-fitting spoke keys). I refuse to build wheels with them any more,

regarding the rubbing on the hub cone (or spacer?)... the axle might have been replaced after being bent. The minor deformation of the rim might have occurred at the same time as the axle was bent. As many of us know from personal experience, bent axles weren't that uncommon, especially when using 6 or 7 speed freewheels.

Question... I have a Catrike Expedition recumbent trike. I've heard that you can make it faster by replacing the bearings with ceramic bearings in the headset. True or not?

Gonna have to say false. It may steer quicker but thats not something that was preventing you from going faster before.

I'd go with the Mallard 6 with the wider range, just because wide range is good, and mayhaps it'll teach us something about pulley wheel distances on rear mechs? ;) Also assuming we're not changing those chainrings, we'd like to keep our knees!

Should I use grease or oil on jockey wheels? I've always used grease, but noticed they spin better with just oil. If there's resistance, I think they'll wear faster. And the bushing is sintered, which indicates it's meant to be oiled I think!?
@parktool
@parktool 9 месяцев назад
Grease will provide longer lasting lubrication, but it will not spin as fast. Oil is typically used there, but you may need to add some time to time.

Contact the manufacturer for their recommendations. If you are referring to the older tubular style, stay under 100 kgf as they are thin aluminum.

Don't the threads have to match the hub? Seems like it would have to be Italian, assuming it's a Campy hub.

The axle threads have to match the cones. This is a Campagnolo hub but the axle is not bent at all. Those marks are only from normal flex.
