The old race bike rebuild continues! This time it's the pedals and everything in-between. As he rebuilds the old drivetrain, Calvin takes note of some witness marks and configurations that can give us a hint as to what kind of rider this old warhorse had.

The friction shifters position indicates that the big front chainring is selected in combination with the smallest cog in the back. 😉

@@frankda4 to indicate something wrong for the most part. And get people's attention with the photo. He explains in the video, why you shouldn't ride like this, but if you are an experienced bicycle rider, you already know. You can do it, but it's not recomended.

I haven't used friction shifters for as long as I can remember, but I'm guessing that will give you biggie small or top gear.

I still have my old Duegi 101's.......Here is a tip. To reduce the pressure of the strap on your foot, go with double straps. Each one has to be only half as tight. The second strap goes through the front slot in the pedal, and over the front of the toe clip. Tip#2 Give the strap a twist under the pedal, so it won't slip. Tip#3 Use White Binda straps to increase the "cool factor". Time for a new Fixed Cup......

As far I recall it (it's about 40 years after all!), the trick was to tighten a cap a bit more because tightening the ring shifts the cap slightly outward.

Dust caps keep the threads clean for the crank extractor. Since seeing some munged-up threads I am a dust cap convert. (Love those brazed-on cable guides.)

Unless they're seized in, and you have to hammer them out, and the threads end up stuffed and corroded anyway (I now own a crank thread chaser . . . )

Dust caps tend to hold water and dust in the crank threads, especially if they have holes in them, as these do. And I've had to chisel out old, seized dust caps a few times on my bikes. Nowadays I ride without them. I use stainless steel or titanium crank bolts for corrosion resistance.

Heck…I’d still use clips and straps if I could still get shoes that worked with them! I much preferred the feeling of the positive connection between foot and pedal and never found “tight” straps to be uncomfortable. But those days are far behind us now!

It’s interesting to watch vintage bikes serviced. Certainly less parts than today, but possibly more skill required to set bearings properly. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Hi great video. I’m guessing you’ve set the gear levers in that position as that would put the chain on the big chain wheel at the front and smallest cog at the back. The fastest setup, I think you’d need to be going down hill 😮

adjust cup and cones perfectly, only packed with toothpaste instead of grease... go ride a few miles then tear apart and clean... polished to a mirror.... damn I'm older than I think I am

After seeing the hassle he had with adjusting the bottom bracket bearings, I'm glad I just replaced that mess with a cartridge.

Thank you for this GREAT series! Does your bicycle repair book cover this era of bicycles? I only ride/buy vintage bikes and am always on the look out for more even if they are fixer uppers. I am anxious to learn more.

I'm not a roadie so I don't know which way the shifters go but I'd assume you leave the shifters in that position because that's the gear you'd normally set off in? (I hate it when I let mates ride my bike and when I get it back its in some stupid high gear)

In my 50 years of experience you will notry get square taper crank-to-arm tightened with only the bolts/nuts. After clinching the boltime you should whack the arm with a soft dead blow mallet, then retiighten the taper. Lay it downow with a wood block on the opposite crank to isolate the bearings from the hammer

Park Tool why have you never released a 5mm Allen Key/Hex Wrench with the Screwdriver type handle but youhave in 6,8 and 10mm variations?

The 6, 8 and 10mm are seen on pedals and cranks which require more torque, hence, the padded handle. The 5mm is common with M6 threading. That size does not need the higher torques, and a big handle tends to encourage over tightening that thread.

My bike came with toe cages, instantly switched them out within a week. BTW, speaking of stupid things - I had a new bottom bracket installed on my bike. The spacers they provided weren't alloy, steel or carbon but plastic... as I was pedaling I was hearing clicking, not squeaking or creaking but clicking. Go figure the sound is gone once I put some alloy spacers on. Why they'd use plastic instead of alloy, I simply don't understand.

Gotta love Calvin but WTF put the non-drive crank-arm on..instead of the crank? Extra time and labor to yank it off to put the crank on...so WTF not just put the crank on once, followed by the non-drive arm once BB is installed/adjusted? I was taught it's better to minimize pushing square-taper arms on/off.

Not at all. The "dust caps" have 5mm holes, and will not keep out dust. In fact, they act to hold any water in, and not let it drain. This was a race bike, and extra steel that serves no purpose would be not welcome.

​​@@parktoolmost dust caps are aluminium. Dust caps are important because they keep crap out of the threads on the cranks. This is important when you come to use a crankpuller to remove the cranks. If the threads are full of dust etc, they will need cleaning out first. I put a piece of very adhesive aluminium tape over the whole dust cap, so yes, they really are keeping out the dust AND any water. Weight here is totally negligible.

7:51 Calvin... are you serious? Any part with fatigue cracks is a big no-no, even for a coffee ride. You can't know how much strength is left in that crank. The limit may be just around the corner, maybe even literally. That crank belongs either to a trash bin or to an experienced welder in case you really want to save it. Sorry, but for the first time you deserve a thumbs down for really terrible advice.

Calvin's suggestion might work for some, but I was cringing when he put it back on the bike. If the owner checks it before each ride, maybe that's a good solution, but I can't imagine it getting checked more than once or twice. Might be a good reason for a video on treating the crack-prone junction between the arm and spider?? I'd do something about the gouges from the front derailleur too.

@@lukem7203 well, Calvin marked the end of the crack and said it would be checked on each ride. He also said the bike would be used for casual riding. There's no shortage of photos of broken cranks and stories about people hitting the ground hard when they do break.. even on non-competitive rides. Everyone has to make their own informed choice. I've filed out short cracks on my own old cranks, and would never consider using the cranks Calvin has.
