You CAN wash cast iron. You just need to dry and coat with a generous layer of cooking oil afterwards.

👆 I do love my little cast iron skillet. You can make a really good steak on the stove top and in the oven with a cast iron skillet. I use Dawn soap on it all the time, and then coat it with canola or olive oil after I wash and dry it. *Drying is the important part I think.* It can rust if I don’t dry it and use the oil on after, but you can scrape that bit of rust off with a bit of steel wool.

I do the same thing. Dry it and put oil on it. Sometimes I heat the pan in oven. I dont use it much because I have glass top stove. I use it camping. ;)

@@lil_Marie_Red that's what I do as well, put a little heat on it after oiling... well I used to. Now I just boil water in it with a lid on it then scrub with this cool stainless steel scrubber I have.

And you need to heat the oil to it's smoking point in order to break it down and make a sort of natural "polymer" coating. I toss mine in the oven at 400° for about 45 minutes every two or three uses. Make sure you are adding a thin layer of oil each use to prevent rust.

I wash my cast iron after every use with dawn dish soap. I dry them and spray with Pam. I have been doing this for over 20yrs and my cast iron is beautiful 😍

Great list! I'd add: 1. Manuals, reference books, etc., both hard copies and/or digital. For instance, how to tie knots in those ropes, how to fix that car or use that generator, how to do first aid, and so many other things. Having a reference will be a sanity saver and possibly a life saver. 2. Cables, cables, and extra cables for your devices AND any devices you may come across in your adventure. 3. Of course, but I still have to mention it, FIRST AID including supplies AND TRAINING! :)

I got a side-cut can opener that removes the top of the can, so the top can be reattached. You can save the can for storage, or make hidden stash containers (I scored a 49 out of 50 here. Need an eggbeater drill)

Awesome list - I have found great training videos online too so while there is time I recommend people learn simple things like how to darn fabric (sewing technique to cover small holes or reinforce thinning areas), sew on buttons, etc. I had absolutely NO sewing skills, canning skills, etc and have learned so much from You Tube already. But grab some books/manuals too in case you need them for reference and we no longer have the luxury of RU-vid!

@@diypreppertv I have, but the worry is how long will this depression/famine last? I just keep stocking beans and rice and things to go on rice to not get so burned out on rice, beans. I am low income on disability. I have had bad homeless people rob me of my camping equipment and food! I live in my van. It's getting apocalyptic already!

@@wolfsong3958 I have stockpiled seeds of all kinds. The problem is I live in my van and with this heatwave, I don't know if they survived. It's extremely difficult to prep when u don't have a cool dry place. I have a book on learning edible plants to eat, although I put it in storage, cause these bad, criminal minded homeless keep stealing stuff out of my van. I had to put most of my stuff in storage. It's apocalyptic where I am at right now!

I stock about a year's worth of coffee. Instant, ground, beans, etc. It will be worth its weight in barter. I have also stocked lots of ammo and other things in case someone thinks they can come and take my hard earned preps!

Instead of stocking up on dishwasher soap, shampoos, cleaning chemicals, just grab some good old fashioned alkaline (lye) soap which can be used for all these purposes. A lot of stores sell big bags of Amish-style soap which is super budget friendly and has so many uses. Especially good if you have a good water supply nearby. For feminine hygiene products, it's super easy to make reusable sanitary pads from up cycled clothing, and an old towel, and these can be made with just a needle and thread, no need for a sewing machine that needs electricity.

550 cord also has loose string inside for emergency purposes. Having a survival bracelet made from 550 cord is a good idea as well.

For lighting, I have about 20 small solar garden lights, plus 4 large units (about 1/2 an A4 piece of paper size) on my house. They all have an on/off switch, but will still charge even when switched off. Just put them outside in the daylight, and collect and switch them off at dusk to use through the night. Will easily light your house until dawn, especially if not all used at the same time.

"If you have gained 50lbs..." most likely adipose tissue, so if you are obese, perhaps pre-diabetic, hypertensive, etc., your best prep would then be to get your body composition back into something that is fit for a combat zone or pre-electricity agrarian society; it does help to have some stored energy as fat, but not if it's largely hampering your health and fitness.

Just a little added note after seeing the footage of your roly-poly’s… I recently found out that these little guys can take metals out of the soil! Amazing huh? So don’t kill them! When stockpiling clothing remember you will likely lose weight during emergencies. Ensure you have additional belts, needle and thread to take in clothing as needed. BTW - great, practical content in your video.

Emergency dedicated solar lamps (outdoor lighting) - I have used my set of lamps 2x this year and they are wonderful. Set them in the yard to charge and light your home at night. We had a week long power outage in July and a 1 day power outage Last week. In July I unpacked the solar lamps so the 1st night we used our candles which the extra heat was not needed in July. This is an overlooked resource that has double duty lighting my backyard at night and in an emergency lighting my home.

You missed oil and sparkplugs for your generator if you have one. Screw the lights the neighbors will hear the genset far away. Your generator kit should also include a startup and load management checklist on waterproof paper. Remember, the power goes out only at 3am after you haven't slept for 3 days (that's because you don't remember when it goes out at other times).

Good point. In fact, most generators don't like to start after people leave them sit ignored for months. Then they need it and,..nope. Also, most gas doesn't keep very well. Back in the day, we'd keep hundreds of gallons for tractors and it didn't varnish up like now with the ethanol in it.

@@kevindouglas8768 Yeah, but it's not just the ethanol. There are other chemical factors as well. There are reasons GM and other owner kept Leaded gas until the patent ran out in the 90's. Tetraethyl Lead is toxic in the extreme, but they fought it because it made them money and saved the gasoline. The oil refiners still don't want to make the gas any better and last longer. That very expensive canned gas lasts for years....

Popcorn is a staple in my family. We have grown somewhat lazy with microwave popcorn but I believe we should all be familiar with the stovetop method and even have a popper for a campfire. Great videos!!! I can say I'm covered in all areas except wood and tools, but they are on the To Do list. Only one area I would suggest most don't think about. Raw sewage backing up through your pipes. Another video suggested stuffing Nerf balls into sink, toilet, and tub drains. Thanks for sharing!!!

The idea about the bleach is an old prepper trick and I suppose it has its place. I would much prefer using something like life straw because you have to remember the bleach made in fact kill off any bacteria but it’s not gonna get rid of chemicals and things to that effect. I think sometimes as preppers to we buy a lot of gear but I think we have to be honest with ourselves. How long can a person really last out in the middle of nowhere? If you’re young and strong, if you resourceful and brave you might last for A decent amount of time. I’m 58 and in pretty decent shape for my age however, we still need to be able to be kept warm in the winter I am speaking for myself to be truthful I’m a little bit air condition spoiled. I do like your videos as I stated I think they’re very practical and useful want to say thank you for making them. My final thought, when you’re doing your prepping stuff be honest with yourself. For example, people can have all this wonderful gear but if they’re in such bad shape that they need a nitroglycerin going up the stairs I doubt if he will last too long. Much better than bleach (which has a short shelf life) are bleach tablets, bleach powder, and even pool shock (be sure to look up how to safely use it while there is still access to the internet).

Doing pretty well based on that list. My idiot sister calls it hoarding, but I have a mental checkliit I've been working on. She's just too shortsughted to see the benefits of what I'm (trying to) get/do. I want to make old fashioned oilcloth & newer (fashioned?) silicon-infused sheets, two kinds of multipurpose waterproofed fabrics. Supplies + skills make one valuable. In One Second After, those w/ knowledge or skills got to stay if they asked, while others had to keep walking. It's a good strategy. I also loved how the characters learned from old magazines in the college archives how to work steam-powered equipment. Ye Old Yankee Workshop tools & skills will be priceless, as will Lehman's & other type stores. Backups to backups, & spares to barter with should be the goal.

There are tons of manual screwdriving devices mre efficient than the 'regular screwdriver' you mentioned, ad being able to use a brace and bit opens up options that are frustrating with electric tools. Be warned, the world of vintage hand tools is a rabbits hole almost as deep and fascinating as prepping.

Bleach has a short shelf life. If you use and rotate through your stash no problem. If not, look into Calcium Hypochlorite (pool shock). Store it carefully and print out some dilution ratios.

@@danaodom1010 1/4 teaspoon to sanitize a 55 gallon drum of water. To make a stock solution to use like bleach, 8 tablespoons per gallon of water. Just like bleach the stock solution only lasts 6 months after being made.

Substitute, for toilet paper is wipes, like Wet wipes. That was one thing that when people were hoarding toilet paper, there was plenty of wipes good idea. These suggestions were great. You make do. It's not a great video honestly. Instead of "feminine hygiene products" he might have recommended Diva Cups. Instead of veg oil, maybe recommend coconut oil or tallow, both of which have longer shelf life. He's a nice guy, and a good starting point for beginners, but he's not really that knowledgeable overall. I mean seriously, wet wipes? When you start stocking up on "value added" products instead of the components, then you're probably getting ripped off and/or doing it wrong.
