If you aren’t worried about every ounce, I keep a pair of ratchet straps in my bag for hammocking. They handle thick or thin trees and are easy to add tension to your line, and make it easy to center between trees. (Also they handle a lot of weight if you need to winch something)
@NoviceWildCamper
@NoviceWildCamper 2 года назад
Good idea although it was the length of the tree straps that caused the issue this time so ive got longer ones now. I habe small ratchet straps at home but knowing me I'd over tighten them and bust everything 😂
@JasperJanssen
@JasperJanssen 8 месяцев назад
I used the thin ratchet straps - a 25mm 350 kg one - once and it broke the first time I gingerly sat in it.

I have never even been tempted with hammocks. As a side sleeper they are not an option for me. I have followed your journey with this set up closely. I was really hoping that you would not get on with it and my aversion to hammocks could be reinforced. Then you tell us what a great nights sleep you had ! Argh..... Looks like the debit card is going to take another hit ! Damn you man ;) I love the look of the inside. All those storage pockets etc. Looks so comfortable and cosy. It definately opens up so many more options for camping. Finding that flat pitch can be a real chore at times. Thanks for the videos.

Cheers Mark. Took it out again Tuesday and ut just gets better. Wasn't the best set up the night of this video due to lack of choice for trees and ground (nearly over river) but I now find myself spotting so many woodlands along the roads I drive thinking "perfect" as they're in the middle of nowhere and no one would go into them. Looking forward to more adventures 👍

I have the regular Haven and love it. I use two carabiners one at top and one at bottom of my backpack. By doing this it raises the pack higher from the ridgeline and you will have even more room above your feet.

Yes I need to add carabiners as only have one on my pack. I then stuff the waist belt behind the spreader bars but more carabiners would be better. Loving it so far though and always looking to mod to uograde it 👍

Got say I enjoyed this vid and that you really liked the sleep a hammock provides. Once you go down the hammock rabbit hole there is no turning back. The thing is, that there are so many things you can change and tweak to suit yourself. I don’t know if you have seen “Shugemery” on youtube but I learned a lot from his great site. Also there is the American “hammock forum” which has tons of useful info. Got to say though you were brave choosing conditions like that for your first outing, I waited for summer! Now after some years I now have a summer pack weight of just 4lbs that includes suspension, tarp, hammock, under-quilt and top quilt. Good luck.
@NoviceWildCamper
@NoviceWildCamper 2 года назад
Thanks. Yes shug is good and quite funny. He used the Haven as well and seems to like it. Don't think I'd end up getting a lighter summer version as flay lay is the only option for me though 👍

You can stay dryer in a hammock and a good rain fly then in a tent. Your up of the ground , covered and protected. Been in those situations more then I care to remember but always came out the winner in a good Jungle Hammock , not so in a tent. My benefit of the hammock is the 360 degree ventilation , one reason like to have the rain fly in the porch mode when possible. Florida has a lot of heat & humidity This old dog has learned a new trick that I never thought of. After 60 plus years of hammock camping. I like your idea of sandwiching the excess line between the two Line locks. I'm thinking of using Cord Locks ( for compression ) and line locks. The items offered today are a world from what it use to be. A continuous ridge line with Dynema line Nama Claws as the tarp adjusters with Loop Aliens to secure the ridge line between the trees. All my ground lines have the line locks on them for adjustments. Today a person can get the rain fly and Hammock up is a hurry. The days of tying all sorts of different knots is over with but not forgotten.
@NoviceWildCamper
@NoviceWildCamper 2 года назад
Spot on chuck. My latest video is exactly that. Dutch hook on the end if dyneema with namma claws and Tac loc toggle at the other end. Works fantastic. If you find yourself without the right equipment you need to know those knots but why make things hard for everyday camping when you can use equipment like that. Work smart not hard that's my motto. Thanks for watching 👍

Glying the spreader point on the sides of the tarp would have given you the internal width without repitching the tarp wider, therefore keeping the ability to close the doors fully and swing a little in the hammock.

Tent poles! I use x6 poles made from 1" PVC tubing cut to length (x2 at 6ft, x2 at 4ft, and x2 3ft)... With snap-clips attached on the ends of 3/8th nylon cord, I clip to the tarp and use the where the clip is attached to the cord to loop over the end of a pole and stake the cord out to secure... Out of habit I use a large 10x20 standard heavy duty tarp. The 6ft poles go at each end of the hammock. The 4ft poles are used for the "front facing" side (you catch the tarp along the front edge just in a few feet in from the corners). With the 3ft poles being used at the "back" corners along the side, so if needed, any extra trailing edge of the tarp can be rolled in. This guarantees air flow, maintains the pitch of the tarp so water sheds, fast to set and breakdown, adapts to any environment, and allows you to drop down the tarp during cold weather or heavy weather when you need to stake the tarp directly to the ground! Lol... When I camp... I don't mess around!

@NoviceWildCamper
@NoviceWildCamper Год назад
You can button the tarp down to an almost tent to the ground so you can virtually fully protect yourself. I've never got wet under it but yes a sealed tent would be better in a storm. However you will never be more comfy than in a decent flat lay hammock. Seriously you should try it at least once. Really is something special in half decent weather 👍

I love mine. I actually went for the little more rugged Safari. I was impressed by how well I slept also. The Safari is almost twice the weight, but I don't backpack camp very much because my knees just don't do long hikes very well anymore, so I don't mind the extra weight.

Funnily enough I've got the wasp in my basket at the moment. Bloody expensive for what it is though but looks a great idea. Do you know what the ideal ridgeline thickness is though? The paracord I used it too thick I think. There only seems to be one outlet in the uk you can get dutchwesr from as far as I can see. I've also been looking at the dutchwear t2 hammock chair. Maybe you're familiar with the area, but considering the weather it seems to me you set up dangerously close to the water course.

Yeah it's a fairly local wild campsite. That part of the river is considerably higher than the main camp area where it can get flooded but there it's fine 👍

Not sure drinking makes you an adult but I have a flask of JD with me when I'm out, too. I just like cider as well 🤷🏼‍♂️👍
