Ariel Hanson had located a planet suitable for establishing a colony for the Agrian colonists. However, they were contacted by Selendis, who told Jim Raynor that several of the colonists were infested with zerg spores and they needed to be killed. Hanson asked Raynor to protect the colony and give her a chance to develop a cure for the infestation, but Raynor reluctantly agreed with Selendis and ordered her to withdraw, stating he would handle the matter himself. This was much to Hanson's dismay.
Raynor attempted to kill only the infested colonists and save those who were still human. Specialized zerg structures on the planet were spreading the virus to the outlying colonies and needed to be destroyed before the colonists became infested. Using vikings to destroy the deadly zerg brood lords from the air, Raynor's men destroyed the zerg bases and freed many of the colonists from infestation.
During the mission, Egon Stetmann reported that Dr. Hanson had locked herself in the lab on board Hyperion, desperate to discover a cure for the virus and give Raynor a reason to stop the attack. However, she stopped responding to entreaties, and when the mission was complete, Matt Horner reported that there was a "problem in the lab." Raynor entered fully armored and, discovering a spilled sample, had Horner lock the door. His worst fears were confirmed when he found that Hanson herself was infested, and she attacked him while taunting him for his lack of compassion. When she attacked Raynor, he incapacitated and killed her. Selendis's forces, meanwhile, sent the Raiders a plaque to honor their efforts.

I honestly prefer this ending because it seems like the more logical scenario. The Zerg virus' key trait is it's ability to hyper adapt to virtually anything. I mean brood strains (leviathan) were even adapted for hyperspace. It just seems very optimistic to think that there would be a traditional "cure" for the infestation. Hell, it took an ancient Xel'Naga artifact just to mostly cleanse Kerrigan.
@brynbailey5482
@brynbailey5482 7 лет назад
Keep in mind those xel naga got wiped out by the infant protoss and then the infant zerg, so they weren't all powerful. Not to mention Kerrigan was totally infested and had been for a long time. To be honest I was prepared to purify the protoss first and then cleanse the infestation later if Ariel failed, was pleasantly surprised when she (Spoiler Alert) actually succeeded.

No easy way out. Tough moral choice, but given the situation putting those colonists out of their misery and sterilizing the colony is the only sensible path.
@brainwasher9876
@brainwasher9876 6 лет назад
What irritated me is that it's always presented as a tough choice, but it isn't. If you side with Ariel then she comes up with a magic cure for the colonist and everyone lives, clearly a morally better choice. As for Tosh v. Nova, siding with Tosh reveals that Nova lied about the mental instability of the spectres, and together you can take down Mengsk. Siding with Nova, meanwhile, means that all the stuff you did for Tosh prior was pointless and you end up stabbing your ally in the back because your enemy told you to. I wish there were some more ambiguity to the choices. They could have made the bad choices give you more research points, for example, or they could have made Nova/the Protoss argue a more legitimate point.
@Toastmaster_5000
@Toastmaster_5000 6 лет назад
I didn't find it to be that tough of a moral choice. Your choices are either: A. Hurt your relationship with the protoss to _maybe_ save a group of people who already had a 2nd chance. B. Don't take any risks and just end their misery. Personally, I'd rather have just let the protoss do all the dirty work (Hanson would maybe be more understanding that you don't want to piss them off, especially if she doesn't understand their power), but that would make the game boring.
@chuchulainn9275
@chuchulainn9275 5 лет назад
It IS a tough choice. The Protoss are old friends of ours. They helped us out and we helped them out. So at first, it seems like the obvious choice. However... if "purification by fire" is the ONLY cure, then why haven't the Protoss won yet? The Zerg are just as powerful as ever if not more so. With all due respect for the Protoss, but maybe it's time to change tactics. The problem is that the immediate problem isn't fixable quickly. What I don't like is not the endings but that it made it one or the other. I would have liked to have made a compromise. Help the Protoss by eliminating out of control infestation while capturing some infested for Hanson to work on a cure.
@Dragonspirit223
@Dragonspirit223 3 года назад
@@chuchulainn9275 Old comment, but I shall pick up here: The Protoss HAVE been winning against the Zerg infestation. On any planet they see with a trace of it, they pull a WH40K and Exterminautaus that planet, obliterating all life. The issue is the size of the Protoss relative to the planets of Zerg. The Protoss can't be everywhere at once, and no doubt they infest planets as quickly as the Protoss can nuke the crap out of them. The world of Starcraft has always been that the Protoss are outnumbered, they are in no way going extinct, but their fight against Zerg is at minimum 20:1, and Terrans 5:1. Perhaps if the Terrans incorporated similar glassing technology on their ships like Battlecruisers, the Zerg virus could be eradicated, and after 5-10 years, Terraforming could bring the planet back.
@chuchulainn9275
@chuchulainn9275 3 года назад
@@Dragonspirit223 I'm sorry but 2 things. 1. The Protoss are NOT winning against the Zerg. In WOL, at the very beginning, Raynor tells Tychus, "They're still finding Zerg on Mar Sara despite the "purification" by the Protoss. Also, have you forgotten the Fall of Aiur? 2. The point you made the Zerg vastly outnumbering the Protoss only proves the fact that "purification by fire" is ineffective.

A lot of people here are saying this ending feels like the more realistic, and better written outcome of the Haven missions. On that I agree. One point I notice not being talked about though is Ariel's supposed miraculous victory in the other ending. Everything is cured, everything is fine, not a single infested shows up (a sharp contrast from 99% infested Ariel in this ending), and then she tried to get Jim to stay and afterwards is never heard from again. Even the UNN broadcast is from one of what is reported as several worlds that have been settled. It's perfect... too perfect. To me it reeks of a lie. Ariel didn't find a cure, by the time the mission select screen comes up she's already gone. She convinced Raynor to chase off the Protoss, and now the planet is hers to infest at her leisure. To me, this isn't just the better written ending. It is the better ending, the one that actually saves lives.

They didn't stay in Haven, they left the planet and found another one, Ariel didn't cure the virus, she just had more time to keep working on a cure (one she may never find) and quarantined the infected with armed guards. She fell in love with Jim while working for him as a scientific assistant even testing and analyzing the materials Jim and Tosh were collecting even when Jim didn't ask her to, Tychus mentions that he realized that Ariel was attracted to Jim and tells him in a sarcastic way. In the event that Ariel has always been some kind of Zerg Queen, it only occurs to me that she was an experiment by Dr Narud but that would make more sense if Ariel had worked at some point in her career at the Moebius Foundation or if they had crossed paths at some point, and it would make little sense that the Zerg would attack Agria, and Ariel was asking for help, if i had to guess i'll say that Ariel have some kind of artefacto than atracts Zerg and she keep it as a secred

First time I played this game, this was the choice I made. It was possible to cure normal zerg infestation back in the first StarCraft. The N64 had an extra mission where you saved an infested Stukov and cured him using protoss anti-zerg nanites. He was then given to the Moebius Company to further research this cure. Sadly, the Moebius Company is run by Dr. Narud. Who is actually Duran (duh) and re-infested Stukov and made sure this time he couldn't be cured. That's why Abathur said that Stukov is not a normal infested terran, that his dna is a mix of terran and zerg in such a microscopic level that even he couldn't replicate it. Stukov is more infested than the first Queen of Blades was.

@@EteamProductions Issue with that: As far as we know, Secret Missions are not full Cannon, and more Fan-service. In the Starcraft Broodwar, Zeratul spotted the original Hybrids, and Dr. Narud (Was he Duran at that time? The guy has, like, 3-4 personalities). However, when he spotted the Hybrid in the Protoss Missions, he claimed 'who could have created such an abomination', even though he already spotted the creator. In the WoL secret mission, Raynor sees Mobius working on a invulnerable Hybrid, however he NEVER SPEAKS OF IT AGAIN. No conversation about it to Valarian (as far as I know at least), no speaking of it if such a thing is possible to other people (other than the usual conversations, but THOSE never go anywhere either). My point is this: The games have Secret Missions, however they don't ever get confirmation as they aren't referenced outside of their own game (if, I don't know, Zeratul showed up at ANY TIME WITHIN THE 4 YEARS BETWEEN BW AND WOL AND JUST SAID "Hey, friend Raynor, just letting you know, I saw some Zerg/Protoss Hybrids the other day, just warning you, could be pretty powerful." THEN WE COUKD CALL IT OFFICIAL CANNON. I suppose him 'searching the stars' for his other Hybrids could be a reference, but he never directly references his findings anywhere, same with Jimmy Raynor, who almost dies to the Hybrids, but other than a few statements here and there, nothing cones out of it.) My point is this: I haven't seen much evidence that the Secret Missions affect the main story, mostly because not everyone could get to it, and leaving some players wondering 'Hey, why are they referencing this thing that happened last game? I don't remember that?' And so they are more of a reward for exploring, and give a bit more information, but never lead anywhere. Because of this, I personally don't consider the Secret Missions Cannon. Ever heard of Shrodingsrs Cat? It's kinda like that, they could or could not exist, depending on what the player does, if they Beat the mission within 25 minutes, Zeratul learns about Hybrid. If not? Oh well, you did miss out on a tiny bit of lore, but not much else. Effectively what I'm saying is this: The Anti-Zerg Nanites could exist, but they could also not. And because they don't mass use this after 4 years of it existing, I'd lean towards it either being a one time gig, too expensive to mass produce it, or Selendis (the right hand of Artanis) for some reason doesn't have access to it.

I chose Protoss because I was seriously pissed off. I knew that If I choose to side with Inconvenient Science Lady, the game would somehow be able to make her actually do it... Actually create a cure to the FREAKING ZERG VIRUS. How ludicrous is that? Protoss, with several years experimenting, researching and analyzing of said virus couldn't do it. The best scientists of the Terrans couldn't do it. Hell, I suspect even Kerrigan/Abathur can't UNinfest someone. Suddenly this lady from a random ass planet of farmers that had no contact with Zerg is able to do it effortlessly out of the blue? Give me a break. And there was enough time to conduct this research, ever since a command center was first infested on SC1, to the present time of the Haven crisis. Can you imagine the ripple effect that a cure to the Zerg virus would have? How many Terran worlds would be saved because of that? It would be a complete shift in the balance of power. You might say "Oh, but Zerg would adapt to the cure or create a new virus" and for that I say, the speed of Zerg adaptability is much much MUCH faster then what you suggest. The moment the cure entered the bloodstream and killed the first Zerg virus, the virus would start adapting to it. If Inconvenient Science Lady was able to bypass that fact with her cure, I'm afraid her's would be a completely unstoppable cure. As for creating a new Virus... Thousands of worlds would have to be re-infected, but this time, the populace would be ready, trying to avoid infection armed with previous knowledge and experience on dealing with Zerg Virus Outbreaks. Giving Terran forces time to set up bunkers is the one thing you shouldn't do, ever. In the campaign, we killed hundreds of Infected with 6 bunkers of firebats and marines, a couple of missile turrets and a squad of hellions. These are extremely cheap to acquire. Siding with Inconvenient Science Lady expecting a cure while having to hold back the Protoss AND infected at the same time is also really stupid from Raynor. Losing favor with a race that's all about honor 'n shit for the life of some terrans while expecting a random ass lady to be able to develop a cure for the ZERG VIRUS. Raynor could very well fail this and get pinched between Zerg and Protoss, waiting for lady to do her thing which, realistically, she wouldn't. So he would leave the planet with a kicked butt, saving no one, losing favor with Protoss, losing minerals and manpower. I suppose at least he would tap that booty. ------------------ Compare it with the Protoss option. The Protoss know that the Zerg Virus is an absolutely massive threat, and have been conducting mass bombardments on Zerg ever since SC1. Protoss have a rich culture dedicated to honor in battle yet for this particular kind of enemy, they decide to do long range bombardments and prevent close combat battle with such enemy. This isn't a standard zombie outbreak, it's something even Protoss can be afraid of. It makes sense to start purging shit up believing no other race is able to do it as efficiently. Raynor was equipped with something that the Protoss didn't knew, which was the fact that the colony was set up not a long time ago so there was still room for survivors, the infection hadn't gotten out of hand yet, there was still time to save some of the uninfected. This is represented by the fact that the Zerg were still setting up Virophages to quick-start the infection process within the colony. So he bargained with the Protoss and, in exchange for being able to save some of the uninfected, he would conduct the purge himself. Masterfully removing the Virophages before they could do stuff to the colonists, Raynor charged on with a large fleet of Vikings and ground troops to assault the hive clusters, removing the cancerous tumors from the colony and preventing full infestation, the cancer was still there sure, and Haven would have to be evacuated, but seeing all these benefits, I'd say that this was a pretty good deal. Raynor not only saved a bunch of colonists through this but also was able to remove critical Zerg structures AS WELL as remaining on good terms with an Executor from the Protoss. I don't know what the hell was Inconvenient Science Lady expecting from Raynor, you know, the man who went out of his way to save her stupid colony 2 times, no less. He was not going to do a massive genocide. It's not like Raynor didn't care about them and not like he wouldn't try to save as many as he could, which he did masterfully. And Science Lady should have expected that from the guy who, you know, was an absolute veteran with Zerg battles and had an army. (How can someone THIS stupid be able to cure the Zerg Virus is beyond me) Then she goes with this "Killing my children" crap. Hmmm, Lady, he killed infected and Zerg. This is not your standard zombie outbreak, but it is a Zombie outbreak and there's nothing we can do for those who are transformed and have tentacles coming out of their skulls. And that's why you'll die as well. ------------------- In the end, I'm glad Inconvenient Science Lady died, there's always better booty somewhere else. I didn't know why she was on the Hyperion in the first place. R.I.P in peace Inconvenient Science Lady, you will Inconvenience no one anymore.

I sided with Selendis because I didn't want to tarnish Raynor's relationship with the protoss, and, because all the odds were stacked against Hanson. Her people were saved multiple times and she still had no definitive proof of saving them. When you pick the other option, technically, you never actually find out if she discovered a cure, and to my knowledge you don't gain anything in the long run. So I wasn't really upset choosing Selendis.

One of the genius strokes of this game is how it respects the player enough to show how either choice is, or could be justified given ambiguous circumstances. Having played games where the writers clearly favor one choice to the point of implying that the player is dumb for thinking differently, this was a refreshing choice that made alternate play throughs both interesting and gratifying.
@QuestionableObject

I prefer this option as really it makes no sense that the infestation just magically vanishes if you chose to fight the protoss instead and it would make more sense for Raynor to want to burn out the infestation in place of the protoss as he can save survivors while the protoss would burn indiscriminately and there just isn't time for Ariel to find a cure for the zerg infestation, if it weren't for the janky gameplay 'concession' by time Jim was done fending off the protoss and Ariel finished her research for better or worse the infestation would have consumed the whole colony. Bad writing by blizzard really, poorly done.

Yeah during the Brood War campaign Fenix became a close friend on the battlefield, in fact his only friend really since Artanis wasn't really certain of Raynor's mettle until near the end and he learned to understand and respect the Protoss and those that got to know him did the same for humans. Even before then Tassadar took him under his wing in a sense when Kerrigan and her Cerebrate care-taker stranded his forces when they came to witness her initial rebirth into the swarm, rescuing them from Char with the aid of the Dark Templar and taking him on as an ally in the final strike against the Overmind, in effect Raynor and Horner owe their life to Tassadar, Zeratul and their respective Templars. Apparently this is all meaningless to him though since killing hundreds of Protoss to save a bunch of zerg-infested dirt-farmers is wurth.

Raynor did take part in the Stukov missions on the N64, and as far as I can tell, they are considered canon (Though details appear to have been retconned, and Narud had Stukov reinfested afterwards). So he is aware of the fact that infestation can be cured, as are the Protoss, but he should also be aware that the Zerg are also capable of evolving strains that are resistant to, or immune to cures almost as quickly as they are developed. What we see in the choice to spare the colonists is Raynor pitting his optimism in Ariel's ability to save this particular Colony vs the Protoss view that ultimately the pursuit of a cure is a futile endeavor.

On the one hand, I prefer the classic grittiness of this version. It reminds me of Starcraft 1 and broodwar. On the other hand, I don't like the writing for Jim here. "If there was a cure, you would have found it by now." Um, no, it doesn't work like that, Jim. Science doesn't run on your schedule. Ideologically, I would be in favor of studying the zerg virus. Terrans weren't founded by men who say "impossible." You never know what might happen in science. But the science wasn't exactly in their favor either. On a practical level, it looked like they were WAAAY in over their heads, ironically contrary to what we see in Safe Haven. It would have been easier to swallow Dr. Hansen's promises if we had some real results to look at, otherwise why are we defending people who are already growing tentacles out of their faces? I don't know whether reality retroactively adjusts to whatever Jim chooses, or his decision itself causes the two missions to be different. Like, were the zerg laying low because they wanted help from Jim, and only let loose when they saw he was going to kill them? Or does the game just make whatever decision you make the correct one, so if you side with Selendis, good call! Those zerg would have screwed you if you if you sided with Hansen. Or if you side with Hansen, good call! We got these zerg contained nice and tight, so no reason to kill them when there's any chance to save them! I'll put more thoughts on the other mission in that video.

They couldn't find the cure because there was no need for it. There was no Infected protoss for centuries until terran appears then infected terran soon follow. Beside Terran and Protoss are biologically different, little chance for protoss to find a cure on terran or even if they care to.
@Servellion
@Servellion 7 лет назад
Exactly. Hell Terran science on zerg infection is probably more advanced than the Protoss if only because the Protoss can't be infected by the zerg, merely play host to parasites. So since that's not a threat to them, they likely exerted their advances in other fields. So here, Selendis is outright wrong. Plus, she's templar, somehow doubt she's kept up with the advances of the Khalai since the Protoss are kinda arrogant that way.
@makaramuss
@makaramuss 7 лет назад
actually no cure is much more realistic come to think of it Imagine: if zerg actually dominating brain cells they can leave a unrepairable dmg that will do nothing but say "I serve" without their host... not walking, not moving, not thinking... it is possible I mean even if you can kill all zerg in host body as cure you wont turn it back... wich makes much more sense. Yea I hate this ending but this one is more realistic... even if zerg not doing what I said then first that about to get cured will send a signal that saying "they purging me from body!" others will kill brain of their host to trade 1/1

CJake3 Oh thats true if you look at it that way, but on one hand, what if you chose to help the colonists and you ended up sending an infected ariel to a world where she ends up raising an army after deceiving you, which is why i asked "so wait if you decide to save the colonists, is she infected no matter what?

I never fully understood if Ariel Hanson was infected already and wanted to create a cure for herself, and failed, or she locked herself in the lab and desperate to finda cure for her people tested one on herself and became infected.

If memory serves, if you let her and her people go, they'll get infested all the same. So, she was most likely infested by this point.

Kerrigan is a special case. She’s not just infested, her DNA has been spliced to make her both 100% terran and 100% zerg. Unlike regular infested, she’s not just being controlled by a zerg parasite, she IS zerg. Which makes the artifact even more bs because it would have killed her, not purified.

It always annoyed me how different the map is based on your choice. If you side with the protoss there is a full blown zerg invasion rapidly killing or infesting all of the colonists. If you side with the terrans there's like four infested civilians being kept in a cage.
@lonefish8128
@lonefish8128 4 года назад
It’s not the same area. If you side with the terrans you only defend the colonists that are not infected and leave the other colonists in the protoss version alone.
@cellulanus
@cellulanus 4 года назад
@@lonefish8128 So then you mean that there are multiple active hives on the world, you leave the uninfected colonists in the same area as the hives that you can save when you side with the protoss to be infected or die.

I did ask about this at one point but, doesn't Selendis joining in purifying the colonists faster in comparison of them doing it alone? I mean sure it's a *Terran Thing* but I just wanted the possibility of having a full blown infestation where Raynor and Selendis contains it.
@frosthounded
@frosthounded 5 лет назад
The protoss way of 'Purification by fire' is to literally slay EVERYTHING. Infested and clean. No one get's out. They've been known to sterilize entire planets simply because some Zerg were detected. Raynor doimg this means that some of the innocent survive

Weird. I just played this game for the first time and chose the save option so I came here to check the other one. Seems weird gameplay wise not to have some infected colonist on the save option. The way the Protos made it sound to me was "they have a tiny bit of zerg infection so we must purge them" but then right here they're super fully infected.

@lenkagamine4145
@lenkagamine4145 3 года назад
the game basically treats it as if you are right whichever option you pick. If you say that you have to purge the colony, the doctor fails to find the cure, becomes infected herself while trying, and the colonies are only saved from being overrun by zerg by your quick action. If you say you can find a cure, then loe and behold, the infection takes a long time, you find a cure, and none of the colonists end up eaten by hydralisks.

Honestly i know the most logical and (starcraft way) was to pick purification since if protoss cant find a cure how can a terran find it ..... But in the end i picked to "cure it" (my second run and i prefer this imo) since selendis still respected jim and the dr survived so its like a win win even tho its cheesy with that love cure thing

This ending actually shows that is no cure for this virus - Hanson tests vaccine on herself and it didnt work. Befroe that mission, Gabriel Tosh saying that "she overly concerned about people and where they live, being an ordinary doctor". In the "good ending" she just leaves the ship and no one says about "cure"

well, for those who think this choise is better than saving Heaven's colony: In the starcraft 2 lore panels at blizzcon 2010 and 2011 they answered these questions. The canonical choices are the A choices, so Raynor chose Tosh over Nova Raynor chose Dr. Hanson over Selendis and etc... + Jim saves Kerrigan from being zerg for 2 - 3 missions(of next company) :^) ,so saving people can be done
