I showcase my 3 hammocks side by side, the Amok Draumer 5.0, the Haven XL and the Hennessy Explorer 4 Season zip. I share my thoughts about them and what I like and don’t like. I cut some oak with my chainsaw and build a temporary wood store and have a Katsu curry for supper in front of a small campfire.

@Brandon Cooper From memory about 3 or 4 months.....but this was probably due to Safari being a new model, the then problems of China manufacturing/shipping; also the difficulties of setting up an European distribution facility.

Since I first watched this I got into the Helsdon hammock Tent. I now distribute them in Australia and they are superb. I actually prefer it to the Haven XL as it is a much better sleep and I don't need the proprietary mattress; I use a $10 closed cell foam yoga mat. I won't be going back to a gathered end hammock and will pass on my haven XL to a daughter (I have 5). keep making the vids!
@ShadowCamping

I haven't seen these before, they look really good and very well made. I think that the lay-flat hammocks are so much more comfortable than the more conventional ones and the Helsdon one seems to have some unique features. Thanks for your feedback and support. 👍

I love the Helsdon but at 3kg, where the haven sits at 2kg... or 3kg with the pad, for the same price... The gear storage pockets, and pad independence arent worth it the difference unfortunatly.
@fatmanfaffing4116
@fatmanfaffing4116 Год назад
@@pedroclaro7822 True the pockets are handy but you must have the Haven pad or else it doesn't work, or not very well. If that is punctured or damaged beyond in-field repair the system is severely compromised. I don't get your 'difference' point given the weight is the same. Both are excellent hammock tents and for me the deal closer was simply how fast the Helsdon can be put up or taken down compared to the Haven XL and the huge internal storage for my gear. It really is a 2 minute operation and so I use it more often, even for family day trips to the beach. I just adapted the carry bag to be used as a ridgeline organiser so that's my pocket issue resolved. I also did the simple mod to make the poles removable and it now packs down a lot smaller than the HavenXL (Videos on my channel and the Helsdon channel). But will I be selling my Haven XL any time soon? No, I really like it and it's handy for one of my kids or friends if they come with me.

Thank you so much for the in-detail video with different angles and a lot more. I do not know how this doesn't have more views, as it's the only video comparing the three. Only one other out there comparing the Haven vs Draumr, but it didn't blow up either... Goes to show it doesn't depend only on the video content... Here's some suggestions: - Remaking the video in a much much shorter timeframe, you can just summarize this one and edit in some of the footage. (i'd say most people will run away from anything above 20min) - Catchy almost clickbaity title, all caps "HAVEN VS DRAUMR VS HENESSEY" for example. Dan Becker shared his sucess story and his first viral videos has all caps, clickbaity (non misleading) titles, and attention grabbing thumbnails. - Timestamps for each hammock system and then a summary - Hammock system specs in the description (take a look at Luke from TOGR)

Thank you for this very useful comparison between these three high end camping hammocks. I've been hammock camping since the mid 1970s and I've owned a Hennessy bottom entry hammock for probably ten years. I'm getting old enough that the bottom entry is too much of a hassle, particularly for winter camping where there is an insulated pad, heavy sleeping bag, additional clothing, etc. I was mostly looking at the Haven and the zip version of Hennessy, the exact versions of each that you reviewed. I had heard good things about the Amok but hadn't seen it. My interest is ultralight motorcycle camping now that I'm too old for hiking, bicycling, kayaking, etc. I have a small adventure motorcycle and I'm trying hard to keep the weight and packed volume to a minimum, more like motorized bicycle camping. One of my goals is to use the hammock as a camp chair when cooking or just sitting around camp and that would seem to eliminate the clever Amok design. I'd usually avoid a 56 minute video but this video had all of the information I needed and I didn't feel that it was ever wasting my time. I also appreciated the bonus cooking at the end of the video. I ordered some S&B Japanese curry mix from Amazon and it'll be here tomorrow. It may go into my home cooking rotation but I mostly got it for camping meals. Thanks!
@ShadowCamping
@ShadowCamping 6 месяцев назад
Thanks for your interest and support. Nice to hear you found the video helpful and I know you will really enjoy the curry mix. I fear you are right about the Amok chair mode although I am not sure any of them could fulfill that brief. What I have used in the past is a cheap string type hammock as my camp chair which worked really well. Happy hammock camping. All the best. 👍

@@ShadowCamping - My new Hennessy 4 Season Explorer XL Zip hammock arrives tomorrow. I got it because I'm old enough now that crawling up into my classic bottom entry Hennessy Explorer XL hammock is getting to be a hassle. The zippered side entry should be much easier, and also much better when I use two poles, guy lines and stakes to pitch the hammock as an improvised one person tent when there are no trees. Thanks again for the Japanese curry tip. It's delicious. I need to take that, some veggies and some minute rice for a camping meal. I packaged ten camping versions of Thai Peanut Noodles yesterday. It's tasty enough when prepared in camp but it's better with an onion and bell pepper. It's way tastier and way cheaper than freeze dried meals.

Like you I am a fiend for the one pot curries. Here in NZ I buy May Ploy curry paste from our local Thai products shop, adding a stock cube does make all the difference. I like the idea of making the sauce separately, that’s a good tip I will be trying next time. You place your backpack under the amok. Be sure you have a reaching distanse to the ground when you lay on the stomack. In the morningen you have the draumr in flat mode. Lay on your stomack. Bend the TOP head portion donwn and towards your feet. Now you can take the jetboil out of the backpack and make your coffe and food. When you are ready bend the head portion BACK in posission, and turn around and get in cahir mode. Enjoy your food and coffe.

Loving your seemingly unbiased content toward products..very refreshing! I presume you were lying on the wrong diagonal on the Hennesey hammock…that looked odd/uncomfortable …and you went quiet and looked puzzled yourself? Boggles my mind that a “top end” hammock can have a bad or non existent suspension system and people still buy it? As you have experienced the top end hammocks it would be really interesting and little expense to compare the other end of the scale hammocks from Ebay etc…..my first double hammock was from Grassman(I think) and less than £30 but short and soo deep you couldn’t even get out of it! (But somehow comfy as you could get diagonal) Yep, love my quilt when in a hammock…no need for a bag when insulated underneath. I have a campsite in the south of England and I let guests use those mesh fire pits free of charge but they don’t last long…I presume they are machine folded and they always break at the fold, if they were just rolled and not folded I think they would last well. All the best hermit

Thanks for your interest and feedback. Like everyone I have my favourite pieces of kit. I have tried all sorts of positions with the Hennesey but I think that I am at the upper weight limit which may explain why it is not so good for me although I will definitely give it another go. My wife manages fine in it but she is much lighter than me 😂 I have quite a lot of gear that I have not shown on the channel yet but will happily add another hammock to the list. 👌 Hmm those mesh fire pits are great for occasional use but I can understand that they would not be good for continued use. Perhaps a steel one might last better. What is your campsite called and when do you open for the season or is it an all year round one? All the best 👍

Excellent video, thanks. I have 3 Amok Hammocks, and i love them after getting used to them.. The only real issues i have with them is the first one you mentioned. It is slippery like h…, if you use a normal “Nylon” seeping bag. Utterly hopeless. The bag is on the foot end in 0,5 seconds and very hard to get in to, at you mentioned. I actually got in contact with the manufacturer and addressed the issue. Asking if the could put some kind of rubber dots or some treatment on the fabric. They are so nice talking to. Their main reason not to do that is weight, when you’re buying the top of the line, weight is one off the main parameters people are considering. And it would add more weight. The second “issue” you must be very precise with is the moment you are hanging the hammock up in the trees. The rigid line must be 100% straight “Horizontal “, or you will have the problem sliding towards one of the sides. And that will ruin your entire 😴 I tried it one night setting it up when it was getting dark. - A little of, it’s fine. NOPE, i would rather sleep on an roll of barbed wires, naked, than doing that again😂

Just curious if your preference for the amok over the haven tent comes to comfort at all? I agree the tarp for the haven is not great and my plan would be to elect not to get that tarp and use a different tarp with it. The bottom line is the amok is more expensive and I’m curious if that equals more comfort? Thank you!
@ShadowCamping
@ShadowCamping Год назад
Haha. it is a game of 6 and two 3's. They are both extremely comfortable. The Amok does have more flexibility in terms of different positions but the cost of that is that they are not that easy to use until they are mastered. They also have more space around you and places for kit to be stored. The Haven is by far the easiest one to use and with a different tarp is great and can be easily used with a sleeping bag. They both have brilliant thermal properties tho I think the Amok is slightly higher. As you say the Amok is way more expensive and the comfort is comparable with the Haven. Hope this helps. All the best

So cost and weight not withstanding, which of the 2 lay flat hammocks (the Amok or the Haven) would you ultimately recommend, was really hoping to see a part2 after sleeping in the haven the next night! Im just wondering if the Amok is superior enough that it equals out to another 200 USD in comfort or if the Haven is largely the same in comfort?
@ShadowCamping
@ShadowCamping Год назад
Hi, I can only give you my opinion having used both of these hammocks quite a bit. Both of them are comfortable as lay flat hammocks but the Amok benefits from having much more space around you so ultimately you can use it for much longer periods of time, i.e. during the day to read a book or just to enjoy being whereas the Haven is much more a sleeping hammock. The Amok has outstanding build quality and the customer service is brilliant. The Haven is well made and also has excellent customer service. All in all my favourite out of the two is the Amok, having used it a lot I am happy to pay the extra over the Haven. Whilst there is not currently a part 2 to this subject, there are a lot of videos of me using both on my channel if you would like more usage scenarios. Really hope this helps, many thanks for the comment. All the the best.

@@ShadowCamping thanks for the reply. My only real concern for the amok is the temperature/weather control. Since the entire top is over and very widespread out does it tend to get colder? And how does it hold up in the face of stronger wind and rain? Any experience there?
@ShadowCamping
@ShadowCamping Год назад
Hi, I have found the Amok to be very comfortable in all conditions. I have never had any weather come into the Amok and the bug net keeps a lot of warmth inside. The Amok tarp can be cinched down quite low over the hammock so not much wind gets past it. Also because you are suspending it to trees there is generally less wind for any hammock. If you buy a Haven you will probably want to buy a different bigger tarp as the one it comes with is very close to you when sleeping and can get very condensationy whereas the Amok is further away from you. Hope this helps. All the best

Top quality bit of kit, asymetric gathered end etc. I just spent my first two nights in my new Haven XL and I like the unit for easier side sleeping and the flexibility of ground set ups. So glad you found it interesting and perhaps useful. The Haven XL is certainly a brilliant piece of kit and you will enjoy using it. Good demonstration of the three. I've been looking at the Haven and the Amok, and your info is really helping with my decision. The one thing I don't like about the Haven is the closed up feeling -along with the condensation. I'm hearing mostly good things about the Amok - the only knock is the getting in and out, but I'm sure that improves with time. Great thoughts on the sleeping bag vs.quilt! It's super easy to throw the quilt off in an emergency - can't say the same about the sleeping bags. How do you like the Amok a year later?

The Amok is still my favourite. I completely agree about the haven, I have taken to using it with a bigger fly that does not close it in. As for getting in and out of the Amok, it is a knack and once you have got it sorted, it is comfort all the way. Happy hammocking 👍

That is a very close run thing. I think I would choose the Amok first and the Haven very close second. The Haven and the Amok are both very comfortable flat lay hammocks but I personally favour the additional space that the Amok gives. This said there are trade offs, the Amok is a lot harder to use but gives more space whereas the Haven is absolute simplicity to use but has less space. These are only my feelings based on having bought all 3 of them. I hope this helps but I would definitely try to Try before you Buy. I will be taming the Amok on my next trip up to the woods so watch this space. All the best

Very nice video and good comparison. I also started with a Hennessey, but the expedition with no pad option. That would be handy, as the chill does come from below. I don't want to battle with underquilt. I bought the Draumr 5 next.. ejector seat is very apt. I toss and turn when I sleep. This morning, I could feel that I was a bit toward the head end when I woke. I tried to adjust and ended up in a ball in the head end on the floor. I think I got the larger model and yet I am short, so that doesn't help. Finally, I got the Haven Safari. I figured I wanted durable, but a regular one would likely be fine. I use a hammock as my bed at home, with wall hooks. I'd be hard pressed to pick a favourite... they all have their pluses and minuses, though I have sworn at the Draumr far more than the others. Perhaps if it was the shorter one, it wouldn't be as much of a problem.

@Shadow Camping Funny enough, after a while, I switch back to my Hennessey to "even out the after washing whatever setup is currently in use. I still find it incredibly comfortable in warm enough weather or indoors. Getting rid of CKS (chilly kidney syndrome), "especially* after imbibing, would likely make that much more so. Oh, also, on try #2 of sleep today, again, I slept well enough until I awoke standing partially up like a mummy on display in my Draumr. I will give it more time before cycling in a Hennessey or the now dry Haven. Oh and I use a poncho liner, often referred to as a ranger blanket as my cover, but definitely will add a quilt to the list, since the under part of a sleeping bad doesn't do much due to flat insulation anyway. I don't know if it is a different zipper reinforcement on the Safari, but the one bad thing I can say about the Haven is my elbows feel like they are going to be rubbed raw by that, so I use something between, like part of my poncho liner.

I found that my arms got cold in the Haven because they are against the outsides, perhaps just because I am of the fuller figure 😂

@Shadow Camping It is probably common. I should obtain a camp quilt before I go out this year. The poncho liner is pretty light, and the Canadian military 3 piece sleeping bag is likely too heavy.

I bought an Enlightened Equipment quilt and have never looked back since. Hope you find one as good. 🤞

I am very envious, I can't use my local woods at the moment because of forestry work and deer stalking. I am planning on going out next week somewhere tho. Have a great time and be safe. 👍

Haven hands down. I’ve had a Hennessy before but not an Amok, but I have watched a ton of videos. Yes the Haven is heavier than my Hennessy, but the Haven is just so much easier to use. I’m not talking about the setup, because obviously ain’t much easier than the 2 straps and it’s up Hennessy. I’m talking about actually sleeping in it. Get up in the middle of the night to take a piss in each of them and you will understand. With the Hennessy I would struggle for 5 minutes trying to get back in, get everything back in it’s right spot, and get back to the right angle. Never once did all of that work. With the Haven, everything stays put, and I’m in and ready to fall asleep in less than a minute.

I completely agree, the Haven is a supremely comfortable hammock and very easy to use. I am trying something completely different in the May 19th 2023 video out later this week which you might be interested in, let me know what you think. All the best. 👍

That’s the comment I was looking for ! I pee twice a night and wrestle to get back into my HH. The Amok looks like a bit of a faff- I think I’ll go for the Haven .

Instead of lowering the one end, why not just turn around and lie the other way? Around 20 min in.

I think this is relating to the Haven. You can do this but it depends if you have a preference for which way you enter and exit. I always lie down to my right, just a habit I guess
