Hawker Typhoon JP843 is a British designed aircraft of the Second World War, originally intended as a fighter / interceptor, but ultimately ending up excelling as a ground attack aircraft. The Typhoon was the Royal Air Force's ( RAF ) first 400mph fighter, and although it had troubled development in its early years (partially due to the massive Napier Sabre sleeve valve engine that had been pushed into service), it came to be one of the premier ground attack aircraft of the war, scourge of the Wehrmacht and the Luftwaffe alike; excelling through D-Day, the Normandy campaign, and the Allied advance through Europe and VE Day.
While there were many nationalities of pilots and crew involved in Typhoon operations, the primary operators of the Hawker Typhoon were:
Royal Air Force ( RAF )
Royal Canadian Air Force ( RCAF )
Royal New Zealand Air Force ( RNZAF )
Royal Australian Air Force ( RAAF )
Hawker Typhoon JP843 served with 197 Squadron RAF, 198 Squadron RAF, and 609 Squadron RAF between September of 1943 and July of 1944. She was lost, along with her pilot, Peter March Price, RNZAF on the 27th of July 1944 in the battlefields of France.
The development of the Typhoon led to the Hawker Tempest V, which outperformed the Typhoon. Due to this, and the end of World War II, the Hawker Typhoon was quickly scrapped and replaced, with only one example of over 3300 surviving. This example, Hawker Typhoon MN235, only survived by chance after being sent to the United States Air Force ( USAF ) for evaluation during the war. With approximately 9 hours of flight time, the USAF crated the Typhoon and stored the aircraft with many others. Eventually becoming an asset of the Smithsonian, the Typhoon was traded back to the UK's RAF Museum Hendon in 1968 for a Hawker Hurricane.
With no airworthy Hawker Typhoons or Hawker Tempest V's airworthy, we are committed to returning JP843 to the skies and preserving the legacy of all who took part in the development and operation of the amazing aircraft.

Brilliant! Like you I have always been an admirer of the rugged Typhoon. My introduction came from my uncle Bob who served with the Canadians in WW2 and was severely wounded during the Dieppe fiasco. His memories of it were the bravery of the pilots trying to drive off the local German forces so that the wounded could be evacuated, at a great cost to themselves.

Yah. Hurricane: fuselage is truss with round tubes and pressed square ends. Centre section wing stub has octagon sparcaps and truss ribs. Typhoon and Tempest: reduced truss, only in the front fuselage halve. Wings and rear fus stressed skin. Fury and Seafury: Entirely stressed skin, wings and fuselage.

What a great project to follow the progress of. There were not that many Typhoons built so finding original parts in good condition is going to be a huge challenge. The UK Fleet Air Arm Museum are trying to put together an equally rare Fairy Barracuda and had to scour crash sites, scrap yards and old dumps. They recently recovered a wreck from off the sout coast of England which has provided an excellent source of parts. There were quite a few Typhoon airfileds along the south coast so possibly there could be usable chunks both in the sea and on land.
@TyphoonLegacyCoLtd
@TyphoonLegacyCoLtd 3 года назад
I follow the Barracuda project with great interest, they're doing an amazing job! It would be fantastic to find more parts to help the rebuild, there are only a few areas that are needed now. Of course, if we could find substantial remains in acceptable condition, we could always look at an additional project, or merging the two. Right now we are starting our search for the systems components (many of which were used in different aircraft too). ~Ian

Great to see the Typhoon wing structure and compare it to the Hurricane. To modern eyes, the Hurricanes wings are very strangely constructed. My guess is that this is because: It was Hawkers first attempt at stressed skin; they made the wings and then had to modify them by putting in the double skin wing stiffener. There are so many furring strips... A couple of books I have on the Hurricane suggest that the bolted fuselage structure was used instead of a welded fuselage, because of the workforce and equipment Hawkers had. It wasn’t because a bolted fuselage made parts replacement easier. My guess is that it would have been easier to repair a damaged fuselage member than bolt in a new one. The repair manual suggests this likely a correct guess with the repair schemes they have. Love seeing the progress!

Where did the wrecked wing come from and when was nm235 on loan to Canada? Amazing that with the 1000s built only one was saved. I saw it at Hendon. The losses during battle were horrendous. Ground attack was very dangerous. There still must be wrecks in France or in the english channel I expect. You’re crazy like Glynn Powell. His insanity saved the mossie for future generations. I guess you will do the same for the tiffy. I have seen the videos of kermit weeks’ tempest and I know that it is an incredibly complex airframe, so you have a huge mountain to climb. But I guess you just go one rivet at a time and hope you live long enough 😬.
@sblack48
@sblack48 3 года назад
Ok just answered my own question. I never knew they loaned their soul surviving tiffy to the museum in Ottawa. I also didn’t realize that the only reason it survived was because they lent it to the usa after the war, otherwise it likely would have been scrapped with all the rest. Funny how things work out.

I'm sorry but I have to disagree about the Tornado and it's Vulture engine. I happened to live in a house across the street from Harry Lomas who was a developement engineer for Rolls Royce.(His son Bill became a world champion grands prix motorcyclist) Harry told me that they couldn't develop the Vulture motor because the crank webs weren't strong enough and that there wasn't the space to make it work. Just a bit of information from the horse's mouth.

@TyphoonLegacyCoLtd
@TyphoonLegacyCoLtd 3 года назад
That would be a great comparison to delve into Kevin. While I do like the P-47, my knowledge is limited on it so I'd be reluctant to speak to it's abilities. I also think that a true comparison would have to be done year by year through development, as both aircraft changed quite a bit through service. If someone with in-depth knowledge on the Thunderbolt was to get in touch with us, I'd be happy to post a comparison of the Typhoon. ~Ian

Yes, they're both pretty beefy. But quite different in roles, with the Typhoon best at low and medium altitude and the P47 coming into its own at high altitude.
@lawrieflowers8314
@lawrieflowers8314 3 года назад
@Big Dirt Yes, it's interesting to compare the 24-cylinder, 37 litre Napier Sabre with the 18-cylinder, 46 litre P&W R-2800 Double Wasp. Despite being completely different they weighed about the same, at 1070 kg. The Sabre was a very complicated water-cooled, sleeve-valve engine and was dogged with reliability problems in the early years, but it clearly had great potential. Being an air-cooled, pushrod radial the Wasp used proven technology and was relatively straightforward. The Wasp used in the P47 produced 2000 hp but other variants produced up to 2800 hp. The Typhoon had a 2200 hp version of the Sabre, uprated to about 2400 hp by 1944 for the Tempest, which was a much improved aircraft with almost twice the rate of climb. Later versions had a redesigned supercharger and induction system and by 1946 the Sabre was producing 3500 hp. There is mention of a final output of 5000 hp plus which, if accurate, is just phenomenal.
@lawrieflowers8314
@lawrieflowers8314 3 года назад
@Big Dirt You certainly wouldn't want to get into a dogfight in a P47 at low or medium heights, but at high altitude the turbo-supercharger was maintaining power output, which in supercharged aircraft was dropping away. Yes, it always puzzled me how the Tempest could be so fast with that big chin radiator right up at the front. The Tempest I prototype had a 2500 hp Sabre IV engine and was very clean with the radiators in the wing leading-edge, but various difficulties delayed flight until 1943, when it achieved some 466 mph. Other prototypes had beaten it into the sky and they were the ones actually put into production. With that more streamlined shape and the very powerful Sabre IV it might have been expected to go even faster?

I think Ian has pitched this channel about right, the content would not appeal to the average consumer, they want lots of whizz bang fast moving mindless content, with Ian's channel it is all solid information, not the content that really appeals to anyone but the real enthusiast, to dumb the channel down with music and constant adverts would destroy it, there may be more subscribers, but of a different type of trivial person that already have plenty of trivial channels to watch on youtube, so I for one hope it stays as it is, even though it may be viewed as exclusive.
