He CAN'T Make This Hero Call... Can He?

Brian and Art get into a strange hand that probably shouldn't have unfolded in the first place. By the time we reach the river, we have a large check-raise by from a busted flush draw on a very dangerous board. Can Brian possibly make this hero call? Should he?

It really makes sense to lead this river at a high frequency with a straight from the SB as UTG is checking back all his 1 pair value hands and some two pair hands and even sets. But if UTG knows SB will lead straights at a high frequency on river, UTG will start betting thinner for value knowing SB check range has not many straights at all. What a complex game we play.

Doug, you mentioned that you think SB could be bluff raising river with hands like AQ, QJ, etc. Don't these hands have enough SDV to call a 1/4 pot bet? I'm not sure what natural bluffs SB should have here that can bluff raise if he doesn't use any missed flush draws. I think having the J blocker makes the one he chose as good as any to bluff with. Do you really think the bluffing range should just be Qx?

Can someone explain to me why Doug said we need to be calling with 1/3 of our hands on a river pot size bet? Doesn’t MDF say we should be calling with 50% of our range in this scenario?
@jonesydavid
@jonesydavid 2 года назад
If someone bets pot into say a $10 pot then there is now $20 in the pot and you have to call $10 to win a pot which will total $30 once you call. So $10 to win $30 (1:3) means they calling the top 1/3 of your range will mean you are not exploitable and is correct assuming your opponent is playing perfectly (and bluffing 1/3 of the time) and that you have not identified any reason to adjust to him/her.

Doug, you mention Brian need to call with 1/3 of his range bc the river raise is pot sized. To remain unexploitable doesn’t he need to call half his range? Otherwise Arty could bluff his whole range and it would be +EV
@bonniedinkis
@bonniedinkis Год назад
if i'm deciding on a call, i'm putting up 10BB to win 30BB. that means if my opponent always is bluffing, i only need to call with 33% of hands to break even. if you're making the bluff, you're putting up 10 to win 10. if your opponent calls once and folds twice, now you've made 20BB and your opponent made 20BB. so from both perspectives, opponent must call 33% of the time to break even.

Why not have T8s, 79s, and other middle suited connectors in your range out of the blinds and play them for exactly the sorts of spots Art had here, (except not bluffing)? The only problem with middle suited connectors is drawing at straights where an opponent could easily be on top of you with a draw to a higher straight. Which is why you instead play them for small front and backdoor flush draws which can combo somehow with straight draws that go only to the nutted range of your possible straights

@anujkumarkodam4198
@anujkumarkodam4198 5 лет назад
Don't like the river bet even though theoretical a tiny bet is fine. May be fine against most players. Just for the fact that Art is very capable of punishing you for going for thin value in a polarized spot, when your hand becomes faceup. He gets to balance with his trap checks and bluffs in a spot where opponent is capped to two pairs and become indifferent to call against a balanced range. Calling makes sense only if he think he has a lot of value in his donk river range not xr.
@golfmaniac007
@golfmaniac007 4 года назад
Anuj Kumar Kodam dont like the bet on the river as well. Why open a new can of worms against a dangerous player. Sure it maybe an ego thing to impress the fellas on the table by thin betting but with a simple one card straight its not playing safe percentages. Brian was holding bottom two. U have to be precise reader of cards and there is no way u can be that precise. Trying for a little extra of $1300 was not worth it....though it worked out for brian on this hand, i see the bet on the river as a money losing proposition in the long run.

maybe art is bluffing because he is blocking j10 of clubs. but then again he can't really have j10 the way the hand played out. but with the river check raise sizing i think he is polarizing so much he can only have j10. dont think he would ever do that with just a 10 like q10. think that is what brian is thinking. he is basically only losing to j10.
@roundingagain5771
@roundingagain5771 5 лет назад
Actually he can have most suited JT combos (h, d, c) by the river, floating the small flop cbet w/ backdoor straight/flush equity. Picks up the open ender w/ any of those combos + flush the JTcc specifically. I suppose some percentage of the time he can float the flop w/ 88-TT as well, picking up a set and/or 4 line straight on the turn, or making ten high straight/set of 9’s on the river, etc. If Art puts Brian on an tp/op type hand that’s a lot of fold equity with all those combos/hands out there.

What a great hand, I thought that the check raise on the river was the error Art made in this hand. When he made that move, to my thought process this was a huge "tell" here is why, if Art was willing for the river to go check check at the end it would be because he did not think that his hand was strong enough to value bet. There is no reason Art should have believed Brian would check back, oops hmmmm there is a line I had not thought of, Art could have checked knowing Brian would bet so he could raise, well not so clear after all. My line would have been a snap call of the check raise, and I would have been right, but lucky I was right.

Its interesting, how good players have begun to use bet sizes and strategies, which are remarkably similar to, what fish have always been doing. Brians hand is completely face up as some very marginal value hand. But just like a fish, that does not mean, he is willing to fold it. This bet would have been annoying, if Art had showdown value, but since he did not, it should have been a very easy fold.

Received pocket 2deuces in the big blind I raised to 25 called by one. Flop is nine five 10. We both check. Turn is another 10 . I have 2 pair i slightly tilted also so I raise to 40 to take it down quickly and I think I’m ahead. Opponent thinks for about 15 seconds then calls. River is another 10 I check he bets 100 (all in for me) I call because I think I’m good with a full house and lose to pocket Queens. Was I a complete fish here ??????.
