You are 100% correct. It's embarrassing,but there's a whole Japanese/ shovelhead/ironhead culture and they build, maintain and tune that old iron better than we do.
you might want to go and see what's going on in your local Fab Shop" community. There is an entire culture, of people building this very type, of bad-ass, American iron. Designers, Fabbers, Painters, Pen Stripers, Leather workers, Machinists, Fine-detail metal engravers, Mechanics, and Builders all over the country, who collaborate with one another for months, in order to turn-out bikes like this. EVERYDAY in AMERICA!
