The 85th edition of the Tata Steel Masters is a 14-player single round-robin taking place from 14-29 January in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands. World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen heads a field that includes Ding Liren, Fabiano Caruana and teenage stars Gukesh, Arjun Erigaisi, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Vincent Keymer and Praggnanandhaa.
The time control is 100 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 50 minutes for 20 moves, then 15 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment per move from move 1. A tie for first place will be decided by two blitz (3+2) games. If still tied, the players keep playing single "sudden death" games where White gets 2.5 minutes and Black 3 minutes until one side wins. The monetary prizes will be shared evenly. It’s not THAT impressive as people think. Back in the day, it would have been impressive because a young player has limited resources to grow. Nowadays, with engines to online play and such, you have more resources available than one can study, practice and consume in a lifetime. If anything, some one who is born today has a chance of surpassing every player who lived due to the resources one has access to from the very start. So seeing players become this strong at a young age is somewhat expected and normal.

Just a small addition to the recap. Magnus got up after his 60th move, but before Nodirbek played b2. (I was there live) And what Magnus actually did first was look at the big screen for about a minute showing the remaining two games (his and Aronian vs Keymer), quite possibly I imagine watching from a different perspective to see if he had the smallest chance of saving the position. He then went outside the playing area, to then resign shortly after he returned and saw b2 on the board.

The thing about Carlsen is that when he was still climbing the ladder of greatness he always had something more to prove and he was able to turn that into constant progress against all odds. Once he reached the peak he stagnated, because there was no challange that would require him to push himself harder. That's why he gave up his title and chose to follow an impossible goal of reaching 2900 - whether he succeeds or not is not as relevant as the fact that he again has some target far beyond his reach that he can dedicate himself to. It requires him to propel his progress once again. But the natural flow has been tampered with - he already reached a peak once, he already stagnated, he can't fully revert to the same young player he was before. It's a conundrum, but he's trying. Paradoxically, he probably needs the losses as well. The fuel for human success is always emotional.

Magnus has some ego as well. He doesnt need to make unnecessary exchange, especially when playing some strong opponents like nodirbek. The rook exchange sacrifice on a1 is so unnecessary. He could have win this if he just play patiently and being resilient throughout the game. He is after all, the goat of endgames... nevertheless, hes definitely gonna bounce back. Hello, have you considered displaying time situation somewhere on the screen for games where that info is accessible to you? In example, you could display the clock for each of the players between the players' images so we, as the viewers, could get a bit of context how long some moves took to make and what the situation on the clock was. With each move, you update the clock info. I know that u usually mention time situation where it's relevant, but I guess that this could be a piece of additional info that would be valuable to viewers in some situations. I love your content. World champion or not , I can't imagine that playing an 18 year old who has been a GM since he was 13 years and one month old , would ever be anything but a scary business.

Just over a year ago Magnus defended his title against Nepo without losing a single game. Now he has lost a classical game to two players, neither of whom even made it to the Candidates last year. In other words...it's quite possible that in a few years from now Magnus could find himself unable to even qualify for the Candidates if he continues playing at the strength shown in this tournament.
@raltemuan1542
@raltemuan1542 Год назад
Its different tho, he won't make risk like this in WCC or candidates....
@Aetherius88
@Aetherius88 Год назад
@@raltemuan1542 I don't know...he has clearly stated his goal right now is to reach 2900 in classical even if it means not defending his WCC title while he focuses on that, so I'd guess that means he really really doesn't want to lose any games. The risky play is meant to get his opponent out of their comfort zone which means the risk is really shared between both players since Magnus isn't actually playing unsound openings.
