Agreed! Please save the Fear Inoculum songs for once you get a sense of who Tool are. I love the album, but it's not what most people would consider representative of what Tool is. @@dudelove69
I don't know shit about drumming, yet I've watched the drum cam video probably 300+ times trying to figure anything out. I've watched a ton of reaction videos too. This is by far the most informative reaction video I've seen yet
The Devil bowed his head because he knew that he'd been beat. And he laid those golden drumsticks on the ground at Danny's feet. Danny said come on back if you ever want to try again. I done told you once you son of a bitch I'm the best that's ever been.
the look of musical joy on your face is out front for everyone to see. it's refreshing to me to see someone with such a passion for music and knowledge of music. subscribed and all notifications... I'm digging your content. Peace
Dude you are so toasted but so on point. Impressive. Most tool fans are quietly obsessive so with reactions like this and a few more tool songs you will build a quick following. I’m in. Don’t fake it. We will know.
Your Irish accents are on point, and love the fact that you’re loving tool. Vicarious should be on your list if you haven’t done it already. Seriously. Vicarious.
Bro labeled this "amateur attempt to analyze", goes on to describe the metronome octopus in the most mathematically accurate reaction on the youtubes. Hats off, Sir. New sub here
One thing that amazes me is his spatial awareness. The way he plays half of those sections without even looking at half the drums he's hitting is incredible.
Well as a long time musician, that's basically muscle memory. Out of all instruments, drummers do have the widest range of muscle memory. But that's basically it. You have a lot of things to do while playing, so developing muscle memory for your instrument is essential if you want to go ham like Danny here. My point is, it's not even close to being the thing to be at awe here. Though his precision with hits is top notch, hes been playing for a long time.
I agree with a previous comment, I’ve seen a lot of reactions to this drum cam (because it’s a magical performance) and you have broke it down the best so far. I really enjoyed this and I feel that you need to know lol.
Dude, the fact that you grasped the time signature this early is honestly astounding. To me it's more easy to count alternating bars of 5/8 and 6/8 three times, which is like 11/8 х 3 = 33 exactly. Anyways, great reaction and good analysis on your part, buddy 👍
The way he responded to catching that miss had me cracking up 🤣 like watching him and laughing while calling him out on it like “ahh what happened there?! You fucked up and I caught you that’s what happened, ha ha!” Before immediately turning to the camera with a straight ass face like “yea that shit happens sometimes” 🤣 btw, if I haven’t see all the reactions to this yet, it’s close lol and you are the ONLY one that’s caught that, and you caught it immediately! Yours has been among the most fun to watch!
Great reaction! I’ve watched most of the Pneuma reactions out there and yours has one of the best technical descriptions of the various patterns and techniques he is using. Love your vibe too! Thanks!
First saw them in 97, Danny's drum kit was covered during the opening band, it totally dwarfed the opening bands little kit. When the sheet was pulled off and we saw the 2 kick drums and the rest of kit the crowd went mental! The band hadn't even come out yet, they were just setting up for them.
Your Tool journey went from The Pot to Pneuma which is like going from Fried Chicken (easy/accessible) to Dry-Age Bone-In Filet Mignon (complex/developed). Hoping you will react to more Tool stuff and I liked you pointing out the little miss in the victory lap in this one ("I see you wanted to hit something...")
Great reaction, been listening to Tool since 1994 and you're the first person I've heard describe them as I have. They have an ability to change your body chemistry. I have a challenge for you and us Tool fans are likely to support it. Go back to the beginning of Tool and listen to every song as we have. It's something I'd watch for sure. I'd like to experience that again. Listen to every single song in order.
once upon a time drummer lifelong Tool fan. loved the reaction. subbed to witness your journey discovering your favorite band. the song Lateralus was written using the Fibanaci sequence. i think you'd enjoy.
I should preface that I know jack about music theory and counting beats/bars etc, but I am always highly amused at folks trying to figure out the timing that Danny uses on a first listen. I always feel like I should throw advil at you for the headache people seem to give themselves. thanks for the amusement and glad you are enjoying the journey that is Tool so far man. Spiral out
Glad you're back! I watched your reaction to The Pot last week, but when I saw your channel only had a few videos I didn't want to subscribe just yet. I subscribed today though, and I hope you go through their whole discography because I'll probably watch every single Tool video you do. Spiral Out, brother! 🤘😁
Great reaction!! Nice to see a drummer that understands what’s going and able to explain it and also enforce how difficult what he’s doing is. Well done bro. Looking forward to checking out your other vids. Cheers! Thank you.
Dude! This is the first time seeing you, and it's an immediate like and subscribe! Do you know how many people had the ability to catch that one missed note? Or how many could begin to calculate this bizarre time signatures? You're the first I've seen to get them both. And, to be a total goofball in the process? Well done, Sir. Well done. By Grabthar's Hammer, by the Sons Of Warvan , you shall be avenged!
Thank you for checking out Danny! If you'd like another godtier drummer, check out Rick Allen, dubbed, The Thunder God. He's from the band Def Leppard and in their video of Pour Some Sugar On Me, you can catch glimpses of him in action--
(Note I did not write anything after this message this is from Wikipedia regarding his Drum Kit.) Danny Carey uses the wood tip version of his own signature model of drumstick made by Vic Firth. He previously had endorsed a signature model with Trueline Drumsticks (now Trueline's Tribal Assault model). Carey also uses Sonor drums, Paiste cymbals, Evans drumheads, Hammerax, and electronic devices such as Mandala, Korg and Roland Paiste and Jeff Ocheltree (noted drumtech for Billy Cobham, John Bonham, Lenny White, etc) teamed up in the late 90s to develop an entire drumset made out of recycled cymbals. The final product was a melted down Paiste's Signature bronze custom cast cymbals.Danny Carey used the kit during the Lateralus 2002 tour and during some drum clinics through the years. Only three versions of this kit were ever created. Two are owned by Danny Carey and Carl Palmer and other one is located in Paiste's Switzerland headquarters.
They were playing in Boston that's why he has the Celtics uniform on. He wears other uniforms when they play in other cities. He played some basketball in college. I believe he is 6'7
20:39 I'm so glad you caught that, I saw it too on like my second playthrough and I was like "oh that's alright... you alright Danny... I mean come on guys, he has to demonstrate that he's human sometimes" 😂😂 I enjoyed this reaction like no other, keep it up! What a ride 🔥🤘
But the way he responded to catching it had me cracking up 🤣 like watching him and laughing while calling him out on it like “ahh what happened there?! Thank You! Have watched hundreds of reactions to this.. at least all of them, hundreds of views- yeah, I know..🙄 But you were the first reactor, in my recollection that addressed the beauty and difficulty of that ritard, and transitioning from double to single. Geometric, precision timing. It is just one aspect that stands out among more bombastic moments....this and the volume control from pp to ffff during the roll opening the next verse.
Yep, you correctly call it being 33/8 and I instantly sub. I don't count it anymore, and instead I've just heard it so many times that it no longer sounds odd. Which has a little strangely, made it amazingly satisfying to listen to.
Brother, i loved your reaction to this. I am i no way a drummer, but i love the way Danny seems to break drummers brains when working out his techniques. It's classic. Great analysis of the epic performance. Thanks bud.
Great reaction, another great drum cam is Josh Freese from his own youtube channel, drumming with Nine Inch Nails, he's a beast. Now the drummer for Foo Fighters, finally got a little punk in their sound. But also drummer for countless others, including the Vandals and A Perfect Circle, one of MJKs', Tools singers other band. Subbed and here to enjoy the ride.
10:00 "Oh, my God. So, he took the snares off his snare! That's why it's been sounding so interesting." He typically does that. Not really sure why. I know that he likes drum sounds that ring out, so maybe that's part of it. I honestly haven't payed much attention to it, but when I think of his sound I don't hear the snares. I've read that Tool's earlier stuff had more of a normal snare sound, and I've read that he uses 20-strand snares, so he plays with them at least occasionally. Now I'm going to have to go through the albums and pay attention to the snare sound specifically.
I've watched no fewer than 30 of this same drum cam reaction, and I have to say you are the first to catch that missed right hand on the fill. Great reaction! I could feel your enthusiasm, and excitement. Looking forward to more!!!! Keep it up.
Love getting new perspectives. My childhood best friend was a drummer and we listened to tool a lot so seeing your reaction triggered all the drum lingo I learned from him. But when you kept mentioning fundamentals, I was thinking 🤔 "did tool make a song around Danny Carey's warm up ritual?" 😂
First off, to get it out of the way, that portnoy fill is a Neil Peart from rush fill and portnoy would tell you the same. Mike was a major Rush fan. Try Neil's solo from germany. I've heard other reactors say that time signature is 33/8 so your close or correct. I've seen dozens of reactions to this and you are the first person to pickup on the pause/ mistake and to comment on that quick triplet roll towards the end which I thing is the best fill in this performance.
It's great to see a musician recognize the quality of their work. You need to explore their catalog. You'll be showered with views, and your sub button will walk with a limp, I'm sure of it.
It was complete joy being at TD Garden, where this was filmed. I just happen to know the guy who set up those cameras, well aimed them and hooked up the camera reciever ( the guy typing this). Work at our facility here in Boston for 7 yrs and got to meet Danny before the show . Still trying to get him to change over to Zildjian since we're the same Co.
Carey is one of those drummers that is so good and proficient that it seems almost effortless and like he is just playing something much simpler than he is. Some drummers put on such a show that they are doing something cool or hard (sometimes not even that hard) but Carey just does it like it is no problem. He is one of my favorite drummers. Neil Peart and Gavin Harrison are two others like this. I love Portnoy but he is in the more metal style in which he makes everything seem crazy. Not that he does not play crazy things also, but Portnoy is so animated about everything while Peart, Harrison, and Carey seem more businesslike. I like the latter more, but Portnoy is one of my favorite drummers also.
I think a great drummer supports the music - the mood, the vibe, the message. Again (just my opinion) Danny is excellent both technically and musically. There are drummers out there that may be better. But I think it becomes subjective then, in my subjective (and limited)world Danny and Neil P are my favourites. Posted this halfway through - most informative reaction I have had the joy to watch- thank you sir
