Most sport-changing, culturally appealing, lightning in a bottle type guy who was the fastest to ever ride a dirtbike in SX. People tuned in to watch him do shit that nobody else would do. Think it boils down to whether you see GOAT and most successful of all time as one and the same. At the end of the day, JS7 has 2 Supercross titles. RC has 5, MC has 7. That's a pretty big disparity in terms of numbers and tangible, numbers-driven 'success'. GOAT is always subjective. RC is for me.

@@willyjameshuff Why's that? 'Greatest' is a subjective term. There's no criteria for it. It doesn't solely mean most successful. It means different things to different people. I agree. I grew up watching McGrath, Carmichael, Vuillemin, Fonseca, Lusk, Windham, etc, and idolized those guys. But the sport was at a totally different pace before James came along. Ricky did a lot to further the athleticism and work the riders put in off the track, but James took things to another stratosphere. Even in outdoors, the 'bubba scrub' was revolutionary. No one was thinking like James when they were on the track. Always gaining that extra second or little bit of momentum in areas where no one else could, he would always shine on days where other top riders were struggling to get through each lap. It's been almost 7 years now, and you're hard pressed to find a more impressive ride (in his later years) than Toronto 2014. Every top rider out there was struggling with the track, James starts around 15th, and demolishes everyone. He was always willing to risk it, some days that meant the win, some days it meant the asterisk medical tent, but he fucking went for it. GOAT, undebatable, undeniable.

The king of SX is JMc . Hands down. No one is close. Look in the books son. It’s based on wins. The best racer all around racer is RC. He has the most combined championships. But JS7 was incredible. Scary fast, stylish, and definitely a game changer!

Absolutely. I remember seeing an RC interview at ATL once where Ricky post-race explaining his 2nd place finish said "James was quadding that section, I'm just not going to do that." Being a huge fan of RC throughout my childhood, then pulling for James as a teenager, that blew my mind. I knew right there James is the supercross GOAT.

I still think motocross was James’s specialty and made it look so easy it seemed watered down, supercross is where he made people really say wow.! I’ll never forget the budds race I was at where he fell out of the start brushed him self off fixed his levers and won by 3 seconds or something. Being there and watching him lap people wide open and just literally out riding the best people on the circuit was humbling. He’s a special entity to this sport and still doesn’t receive all the respect he deserves.

In supercross, yes, but RC had him covered outdoors. From 2005-2007, James only won 3 overalls against Ricky, all those happened when RC went down while checking out in moto 2, after battling heads up with James. Yeah, James won quite a few 1st motos in 2006 especially, but Ricky would always win the second for the overall or go 1-1 on the day, which happened more times than not. 102 overall outdoor wins (76 450, 26 125), out of a possible 126 overalls... he lost 14 races in his entire outdoor career, and his individual moto wins is over 200 (205 I believe).. and never lost a single outdoor title, 10/10 from 125 rookie all the way to retirement and never missing an outdoor series due to injury. That's insanity... Eli has 5 total, 4 being in the 450 and he's sitting 2nd all time behind RC. His last 4 seasons: 2002-perfect season 2003- lost two races straight up going against Windhams 450, while riding a 2 stroke 2004 2nd perfect season (Hondas CRF450R's only premiere motocross title to date, Ricky also won Hondas last supercross title in 2003, on a CR250R, so the CRF450R has never won a supercross championship) 2005 won every overall 12/12 (Suzuki's first 450) but lost two motos 22/24 when he crashed while leading one, the other James landed on his back after being passed for the lead. 2006- 10/12 overalls, lost 2 against James after crashing the lead away in Washougal and Southwick 2007 won every overall he entered (6) before his partial season was over, 5 of those being against James.. possibly won all 12 motos aswell. Yeah, James had the edge speed wise in supercross, but not outdoors, a Ricky beat him more indoors than he beat Ricky outdoors.. RC: 450MX 7, 125MX 3 JS: 450MX 1 (the only other guy to get a perfect season), 125MX 2 That's 3 premiere class titles to Ricky's 7... or including Supercross and 125 outdoors, that's 5 national titles to Ricky's 15 (regional SX titles don't count, it's not a national title). 150 total AMA wins to James's 98 (Regional wins don't count either) Eli just hit 94 AMA wins after Saturday, already passed McGraths 89 total wins for third all time combined wins. With 6 more rounds to go indoors and all of motocross, he'll be the second guy to break 100 wins, I believe. James has two more overall wins than RC in 125 MX with 28 (125/250F outdoor record), while Ricky has 26 (2nd all time) and 1 more title. James has 2 more wins in premiere class supercross, but with 3 (maybe 4?) more seasons to do it in than what Ricky had to rack up his 48, that's an important variable in my mind... Where would James been with only 7 years in 450 Supercross? I hope someone does that, it'd be very interesting. Ricky is also tied with most wins in a supercross season, just one shy of the perfect season. Sorry for the rambling, but he had nothing for Ricky outdoors.. for people that didn't live through RC's entire career, they dont truly comprhend his level of dominance (Im not saying you didnt btw) and when James went up against RC outdoors, that was Ricky on his way out and one year RC had Epstein Bar and still couldn't beat him, even though James was in his prime.. just the next season in 2008 he went undefeated without RC there. I have all the respect for James in the world, but forget just what RC could do against him... he won every title he went up against James for. It seemed like James lost motivation once Ricky left, infact, he even kind of admitted to that.

If you look at it from purely race wins and championships, yeah, their are definitely guys that had better records than James. But if you think about it in terms of innovation, you have to give James respect. He rode the bike and the tracks in a way the "Goats" didn't think was possible. And it wasn't a one time risk to try to win a race. That's how he rode, week in and week out, and he lived and died by that. That's the essence of James Stewart's greatness. He was definitely the most innovative sx rider ever.

I don't think anyone wanted it more than James, but that hurt his career with injuries. No one was more impressive on a track doing quads that no one even thought was possible, but Ricky really kept defining the line of conservative enough to finish a race like Reed but still the aggression of James. That's why Ricky the GOAT no matter what.

My opinion is I don’t focus on rider’s records. I at look what they brought to the sport and how they played the game. Riders like Carmichael and Tomac are very calculating and focused on the long game required to win championships and I respect that. Tomac said it best, “People don’t remember races they remember championships.” Tomac and Carmichael would charge when necessary and choose their moments of risk. Stewart was ALWAYS balls out every race regardless of what was going down or where he was in points. He’d do the portions of the track I refer to as, “the separators” which forced his opponents to do if they wanted to hang with him. His balls out aggressive riding style had a price attached to it with the insane crashes he had during his career. In my opinion, Stewart is the greatest of all time based on his willingness to lay it all on the line each and every time the gate dropped.

James is an all time talent that didn’t have the self control to dial it back and only do enough to win. McGrath and Carmichael set the standards for Supercross and Motocross that will likely never be equaled period. I think those that came in to SX in the 2000's will argue that JS7 is the goat. Saying he is because he changed how people race is a decent argument, however the King of Supercross, McGrath, did the same thing. He changed how people raced the track, especially jumping, mixing in his BMX experience, this is why he had a season with only a SINGLE loss, winning every other round. No rider has ever done that, and no rider has won as many SX titles, period. Every other racer had to learn to jump low, so using the shifting of "baseline reality" as the reasoning for JS7, with out realizing McGrath did the same thing. RC, forced people to change how they conditioned, and forced everyone to work out to peak levels in order to keep up, but in regards to riding, McGrath and JS7 forced a change in riding styles. Out of those two ONLY McGrath won so many SX championships.

I think James was a stepping stone for supercross for sure, he lifted the bar, and elevated the sport. There will never be another guy like James. I think Jett is good, but he’s got a long time til he has that “js7” stamp. He just won his first sx and his first national a couple months ago, now I’ll give him credit, he is very young, but I don’t think he’s another Stewart. Let’s wait and see if he continues this trend of waxing ass every weekend then he might come into those categories. But for now he’s just another fast kid.

100% agree with every word. I've always thought that JS7 was the most creative, exciting rider to ever do it. The fact that all his competitors feared what he can do. That's why they came up with the turm Stewable, because he was the only one who willing to ride far past everyone else's edge. That includes Ricky. Ricky may be the 🐐 of championships but Bubba is a god of riding a dirt bike. He could walk on water when it comes to supercross.

I’m the biggest fan of James. He’s unquestionably my rider ever to watch race. Seeing him jump the big Hangtown step up on a 125 in the ‘02 mud race, when only a few of the 250s were even doing it was pure insanity. That all said, Ricky is the G.O.A.T. of dirt bike racing, McGrath is the King of Supercross, and James Stewart is the fastest man to ever ride a dirt bike. Period. If these following factors were different, James would unquestionably be the GOAT: 1) if he backed off every once in a while, and was willing to see big picture rather than win-at-all-costs 2) He was on Monster (not Red Bull) and not hated by the FIM, and had his career derailed by them over the bullsh*t T.U.E. paperwork right when he was showing he was back to JS7 form. 3) Chad hadn’t have taken him out so many times Honorable mention: Dungey’s hit on James was the nail in James’ career. People (and certainly the officials) downplayed how big of an impact that was on a dude who’s already suffered many concussions. All hail JS7!
