Our local school has the same automated system. Even if I call in to say my child will be absent, the automated system still calls me at 9 a.m. (school starts at 8:30) and a few times the system did not call me. As a responsible adult, it's my responsibility to call the school and let them know the system is down. But just as some parents don't call the school when their children are ill, there are parents who won't call to report the system is down either. So, it's not entirely the school's fault. What concerns me more is that the child is riding a public bus to school, by herself. If a school bus can't be provided then the parents should be driving her or taking her to school. We have 3 special needs children and 2 ride the school bus but one rides a bus for specialty students. My other 2 children I have to drive to school myself as they go to the same school district but another school location.

She probably lives in a busy city where the traffic is crazy & school buses don’t go everywhere. Or maybe She’s too close to the school that they won’t send a bus out. When I was a kid (90s) I don’t think schools called just bc a kid didn’t show up. I was obviously younger (I’m 34 now) & don’t remember. Ik in highschool they didn’t call. Once I stopped needing to bring in parents notes when I was out, I started skipping & eventually my mom asked if I’d be happier if I dropped out. A teenager who’s known as a crazy slut , ummm YEA lol. Unrelated tangent. Oh well whatcha gonna do about it internet

I hear this with so many schools. I feel like they should be calling this out to parents after 1st period and in the morning in grade school! It is insane how the schools don't notify until the afternoon or evening in some places!!!

Curious, would you allow your special need kids to take two busses across town alone? This seems like neglect on the moms Side. My kids had no behavior problems but no way would I have allowed them to ride two busses alone. I absolutely would have went with them to make sure they made it each day.

She probably means that they require alot of medical care. In our city, my daughter's doctors use the term medically fragile and technologically dependant (my daughter has cp, a tracheostomy and used to have a gtube but with intensive therapies for the first 3 years of her life, she's walking and eating now without the tube :) But because she required so much care she's deemed medically fragile (or medically needy is the same I believe).

This story was totally heartbreaking. I cannot imagine what that mother is going through. I really hope street justice is done to that POS in jail and he feels at least a 10th of what poor Alianna felt. That poor baby. Breaks my heart. She's the same age as my daughter.

Alianna is so beautiful inside and out. I was thinking - I was in school in the 60’s and 70’s and there were no school busses. We had to be driven, walked or take the city bus in Brooklyn, New York. When I moved to Florida my son was 9. I was so surprised that there were school busses for all grades. Lastly, as a special education teacher I was never aware of schools placing calls for absent students. My heart breaks for Alianna and her family. Thank you Zara for making her story known.

I live in Cleveland and I remember this case shaking all of us. There’s so many cases in Cleveland that is absolutely sickening. One case is Steve Stephens. He was labeled as the Facebook killer. He was choosing random people to murder on the streets while on Facebook live. It was a terrifying ordeal for our community. I remember I was 15 years old and we locked all our doors and windows and barely slept.

Ughh I STILL remember this case like it was yesterday. I live in Cleveland Oh and this case brought anger, tears frustration and sadness to all of Cleveland and surrounding suburbs. When her body was found everyone was in an uproar and how her body was found and what had been done to it. I thank God that this disgusting person is in jail and she and her family got the justice they deserved!!! I will never forget this case as long as long as I live. To add another thing these young kids should NOT be taking public buses. The school should be providing school buses. The neighborhood she was in is a super bad neighborhood. Heck I got pulled over twice for doing a door dash at night. They thought I was buying drugs and when they found out I was door dashing the one cop told me it would be in my best interest not to come in that area at night

My son has developmental issues and he’s delayed and I am on top of EVERYTHING. If my sons having a rough day we he doesn’t go. I drive him to all of his extra classes for speech and we are currently waiting for him to get into a speical ed preschool. This is my nightmare bc my son is so innocent and because of he is the sweetest boy, it’s hard to teach him about stranger danger bc he doesn’t even recognize that throwing himself off the couch could hurt himself. So I have to always watch him

This is so sad. My 4 yr old twins are autistic & non verbal. If I don’t inform their nursery of them not going to be in, then they without fail will always follow up and contact me to tell me/ask me if they are coming in. There is no excuse for the school to have not contacted her parents. That poor girl 😔💔

I think for special education students they should have had a real person call parents. Actually sometimes new system is not good these automated messages absolves school from any responsibility. Even though they have a staff just to do attendance in every school. How many students are abscent on a given day 50! Even in thst case I am sure they can call everyone.

0:59 omg (quick story time on that) i had that scare once with my at-the-time 2nd grader (7 yo)😰 her sister (my 11 yo) got off the bus at home, but my youngest did not… oldest thought i picked her up from school, and said her sister never got on the bus and that she didn’t even see her.. panic set in for both of us! It was also POURING rain that day, which made matters worse if you could imagine. The bus driver wasn’t answering her phone (which looking back now makes sense because duh.. she was driving 🤦🏽‍♀️ but my worried mind couldn’t register that part in that moment), and the school wasn’t answering their phone either. Finally on like my 10th (or more) attempt to call the school while i was rushing out the door to my truck, they finally answered and said she thought she was car rider that day (still not sure why because she’s almost always bus) and got scared because i didn’t pick her up, and she was the only one left at the pickup line, so she was crying and went to the office to call me but couldn’t find anyone for awhile. It was quite literally the scariest day of my life because i didn’t know where my child was and couldn’t get anyone to answer their phone! It’s always been one of my biggest fears, and i thought it had become a reality that very day. Thank God it didn’t!

Zara, you are so pretty. I love the way you do makeup. I've always loved makeup and playing around with it but, yours is so amazing. Anyway, I feel such sadness for what Alianna went through. It was not just torture or a horror. It was beyond that. And at 14. My heart goes out to her That pig who kidnapped her and did this deserves to suffer but, sadly he will not go through a bit of what he did to that child.

As parents it is our job to protect our children. How can you send your child off to take 2 city buses by herself to school !? Especially with her having developmental issues. It is our duty as parents to make the necessary adjustments and sacrifices for our children’s safety and well being.

The school definitely should have informed the parents that Alianna hadn't turned up but a child of that age and with developmental delays shouldn't be travelling to school alone by 2 buses early in the morning as they are vulnerable. These stories are so disturbing and very sad because nobody has the right to take the life of another person and cause that level of distress and pain to a child. Rest in peace sweet little girl 😥 I haven't watched this to the end but this is a death penalty case just based on the torture.

I can’t imagine any school not calling a parent if a child didn’t show up, in fact a parent, at the school my children attended, you needed to let them know that your child wouldn’t be attending that day first thing in the morning.

I’m in eastern Canada and we get an automated call at around 6:10pm when there’s an absence that we forget to let the school know, or let them know after the attendance is taken.

There's a horrible case from Cleveland that hasn't really been covered, it's the Anthony Sowell case. So many opportunities for police to catch him but he terrorized the town for decades.

My sis is currently in Year 4 at primary school, and she’s allowed to walk to & from school alone with parents permission. My mother has a very understandable fear of not letting her walk to school alone as if my sis doesn’t make it there, who knows when my mother will be informed. But she’s allowed to walk home alone (they live 2 mins from the school, if that) because she’s expected home at a specific time. If she doesn’t come in by that time they’re ready to spring into action, looking for her and phoning around. I think I would be the same with my own children, even in comprehensive school. Too many true crime stories begin with parents thinking their child has been at school all day when in fact, they never made it and have been missing for 6+ hrs already 😢

Our system is so flawed. He shouldn’t have gotten out of prison after his assault on the woman in her home. This country is a joke. I see this TIME and TIME again. Violent assaults and 3-7 years in prison. It is only when women are take from this world that these pathetic excuses for human beings are put away for REAL time. Rest in Peace beautiful little girl.

Ok so this situation is HORRIFIC! However- who lets their child with a disability take public transportation? And guess what? It’s up to the parent to put the correct info down on their children’s school info. I’m not making any excuses, like I said… horrific situation… but most definitely could’ve been prevented. RIP to that beautiful little girl. So sad.

I live in Cleveland and I’m fortunate enough to live on the west side of Cleveland but the east side of Cleveland is a very very very low income community. Every child on the east side of Cleveland uses public transportation because both parents work to keep their boats a float. For Cleveland- a student taking public transportation is not uncommon by any means. Instead of putting the blame on the parents- school systems should ensure every single student is able to take the bus to their school. Unfortunately this is not the case. It’s sad that this little girl had to take public transportation instead of her parents dropping her off but most likely wouldn’t be able to hold a job to keep their family eating.

What needs to happen is all schools need free transportation from the child’s home to the child’s school and if the child lives too far from school they need to go to a different school in Toledo you can literally go to any of the schools even across town and that school’s school bus wouldn’t transport the kids making the parents have to drive or public transportation. And it’s crazy that this happened in 2017 but schools in Toledo will let students go home without parents in situations where they get suspended.

Reason why Cleveland has so many homes abandoned is because it used to be the car making capital of the US. Once the car industry was allowed to go overseas, cheaper parts ECT Clevelands main source of jobs went away also. Buy american;)
