Yeah man when I was getting into shred I didn't give Satch the time of day he just wasn't flashy enough for me. Now I realize that his tone and his quality of playing is unrivaled.

In my early 20s I worked at a deli on LI and used to drop off my 35mm film for developing at the neighboring drug store. Went in to pick up pics one day and the woman behind the counter said she saw some pics of me playing guitar and asked if I knew who Joe Satriani was. I said “YEAH” lol. She said oh his mom comes in here all the time. I was impressed but didn’t think anything of it after leaving. Two weeks later a sweet woman comes into the deli and asks for me. I come out and she says “I hear you’re a fan of my son Joe....I’m Mrs satriani.” Needles to say I requested my break and got to sit with Mrs. S for about a half hour and she told me stories about Joe. It was amazing. At the end she said you know he’s playing at jones beach next month, are you going? I was living on my own and was lucky to have money for rent and told her no. She asked me if I wanted to be her guest. Long story short I sat with Mrs S at the G3 concert and after got to meet Joe. I didn’t say much to him Becusee I was in awe but the way it all unfolded is something I will never forget. Joe if you somehow read this, thank you. Your mom was a wonderful lady! Hoping for live music to come back soon and hope you come to LI when it does. 🤘🏻

I knew i saw that Kirk and Joe pic somewhere, from Guitar world - Guitar legends issue from april 1997 where Kirk reunites with Joe and they interview each other, pretty cool read they talk about the anti technique era and Joe was saying you should stick to your guns not follow trends, Kirk agreed but was a little more understanding mentioning that he thinks its an action reaction thing, where the the 90's music was a response to the technique heavey shred 80's, saying that musicians are the first to rebel against each other and do new things.

Thats a bit harsh, Roxie is a great guitarist himself and often he interjects with some relevant and interesting points. Joe seemed very happy throughout the interview and it was a great conversation.

Eddie Van Halen took lessons form Joe in the 80's, when Joe still had a lot of hair. He is known as the guitar teacher to the stars.

I was working on a helicopter and one of the other mechanics had a boom box going. Surfing With The Alien had just hit the scene. A few bars into the first song, I asked "who the hell is that?" The last time a guitarist hit me like that was SRV. I've been a fan of Joe ever since.

Got a question for you ryan..what does a guitar player do when you hit the wall?..thats where im at in my playing abilities...i seem to be stuck and cant beyond my current abilities which are in the moderate upper level...ive tried alot of things to break through this level.but cant seem to go beyond..stuck in that place where i can solo effortlessly in certain keys..like its flowing from my finger tips without thought...then throw out something like in key of F...i get fingers tied in knots..cant sweep pick..etc...my rutt!....any advice would be appreciated

Ive seen him 10 times, this October will be 11 times. One was with Chickenfoot, the other was a G3. All the rest were solo shows. Have heard him play the same songs, but everytime he played it different and even added more riffs. Other than Eddie Van Halen, hes the best out there.

As Joe alludes to, a lot of people don’t give enough credence to the fact that the real ‘talent’ involved is how devoted a player is to work. In other words, it’s not just about ‘getting there’, it’s about the obsession with perfecting the things you’re interested in, for many it’s probably far more about that. These are the players you’ve never heard of.

The title of this video gets Joe's quote wrong. Ryan asks "Were you tough on Steve Vai?", and Joe answers "IT was impossible, he was so good". Not "HE was impossible". Love Ryan, love this channel, just had to clarify. BTW, Joe taught Geoff Tyson (T-Ride)... INSANE player.

People forget that Kirk was in Exodus back then Larry laronde , who was a student too, most people think Primus , that was blind illusion. But then he was the guy from Possessed , the actual one of godfather of Death metal and coined the term . Haha

It’s funny, but being a part of a scene often makes a difference. Joe grew up close enough to NYC that he could find a Juilliard grad teaching high school theory. Had Steve Vai not lived blocks away would he have gotten the start he needed? What if Lennie Tristano wasn’t accessible? Then when Joe moved to the Bay Area, how much do you suppose his teaching lessons contributed to the scene that produced the multiple famous guitarists? Probably a lot. Robert Fripp recommends playing with people better than you and practicing as much as possible to climb to their level and then keep looking for better people to play with.

If you had never heard the background story, you would swear that one was "ripping off" the other on many songs. If you HAVE heard the story it all makes sense...of course Vai has carried over a part of Satriani via his early teachings. They are both unique in their own ways, and very similar in other ways.

I've never been a fan of the "super shredders"...just not my thing. I can appreciate their knowledge and skill though, and I often watch their interviews and lessons even though most of it is a mile above my head. I just have to say Satch always seems so humble, relatable, and kind, and he ALWAYS seems to mention HIS instructors and how he continues to seek knowledge from others. Very cool. Satch is also the only one of em who does write songs that I do enjoy and listen to from time to time.

Yeah , as much as I love Joe and Steve Vai’s playing I don’t know if I could take a whole show of shred . The current tour band Joe has with Mike Keneally , Bryan Beller etc would be great but a whole gig of instrumentals is too much .Saw Steve Vai with David Lee Roth and Deeezil Zappas first Zappa plays Zappa tour . Sometimes guys are best as hired hands for other bands . Chickenfoot would be great to see though playing covers etc 😀

Lessons? Graduates from famous schools? I started at 12 and wrapped tin foil around the strings to make it sound like a fuzz pedal. Then you hear that somebody knew somebody who heard a guy who played. We watched fingers at concerts and Don Kirshner's rock concerts. Girlfriends job was lifting the needle over and over so I could learn songs.Sad thing is today's learning musician has everything they need except a job.

What always perplexed me was: if Joe knew they were about to change the world with thrash metal, why didn’t he play thrash ? Kirk, Skolnick, Lalonde…etc. imagine if Joe would’ve played in a thrash band. I can’t really see it, but it would’ve been interesting.

What's the odds of first generation bluesmen - Skip James, Son House, Willie Brown, Tommy Johnson, and Charlie Patton creating 'the blues' deep in the delta. And Jimmie Rodgers, considered the grandfather of country music was born and raised in Meridian Ms. Then of course, the 'King of Rock n' Roll' Elvis Presley was from Tupelo, Mississippi. ..................................... 3 world-wide powerful music genres- Blues, Country, and Rock n' Roll' starts from that one state.( Makes you wonder if Mississippi was the only state in the union after the American Civil War that possessed guitars!?) ..................................... And don't also forget the Yardbirds over in England. What's the odds that Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, and Jimmy Page all came from this band? What if George Harrison had joined them too? Joe is a fantastic straightforward instrumental composer, a legend on his own...but somehow he fails miserably on the lyrical songwriting side, ditto Steve Vai..IMO....how I wished these guys would've never sang in their albums...Comparing them to the likes of Yngwie, EVH *RIP* or Gary Moore *RIP* makes me like them even more, even though I'm purely into metal, These guys are top notch songwriters and guitar players

something about his influence on Kirk & other young students at the time isnt adding up ..... Thrash doesnt exist at the time, so How is Joe teaching these young kids how to play thrash when Joe wasnt that kind of player. Joe was playing more Zeppelin Sabbath style guitar. I dont know, some just sounds improv

Neither of these nitwits mentioned Eddie Van Halen's death two days after he died. !!!!!!! Joe never mentions him anyway and you can hear Eddie's influence all day long in his playing. EDDIE TAUGHT THEM ALL HOW TO PLAY!! No mention, nothing.

I don't know...I don't think Kirk Hammett is that good at all. I know he is in Metallica....I think he lucked out on that deal though, in any other band I don't see him being as successful. Dave Mustaine is a much better lead player than Kirk.
