Agreed, it’s going away slowly though, and the things that would get you nailed 5 to 10 years ago wouldn’t get you hit by a pitch today, at least, not as often
Imagine the same happening on something like NASCAR. Somebody bonks and creates a crash, the team gets the right to send a wrong-way driver to take out the offender.
It kind of already exists. If a team knows the opposing pitcher hit their guy on purpose, they will often retaliate by hitting a batter themselves once it's their turn to pitch
honestly, given how shit all pitchers are at hitting anyways, this sniping thing should be what they do instead, take them right out of the batting order, pitchers become defensive retaliators. I'd watch that, keep pitchers honest. Sniper hits a pitcher that hasn't hit anyone, throw him out of the game, now you're stuck using backup pitchers.
Yeah but that's why hockey used to be cool. When men start getting outta line, you go punch each other in the face a hit and then move on with your lives.
That is a rule...BUT Baseball umpires have a tough time determining intent by the pitcher for wild pitches. Also, umpires will typically warn the teams about throwing at eachother before they throw the pitcher out of the game, so that gives some leeway for shenanigans.
@@o_kneepixel Yeah it should just be "Don't hit opponents with a ball" on a one warning and then ejection from game system. Tighten up your aim or get out of the sport.
@@o_kneepixel i see what ur going for, but humor me that if theres these known "unwritten rules" and u notice a batter break such a sacred tradition and the pitcher then responds accordingly, u can pretty easily deduce "oh that was on purpose"
Ludwig: Points out that the unwritten rules of baseball are dumb because they are only enforced under threat of having a ball thrown at you. His solution: Threaten to throw a ball back.
The best thing about the false start rule was that it was created with results from a sample of average people, not world-class sprinters who have trained their entire lives to react fast to a gun. Genius!
And later on the track and field association or whatever their name is did a study with actual elite sprinters to see if that rule is valid. CONCLUDED that it was invalid. And then kept the rule anyways
Doesn't matter even if it came from a sample of worldclass athletes. Stats by definition is never 100% confident. The possibility of outliers always exists. Edited for spelling
@@yuukinoyuki9064 I understand your point, but it is a bit ridiculous that these athletes, who train specifically for fast reaction time, get DQ'ed bc they react faster than an average Joe would. The only reasonable thing to do, is to study how fast the human brain/body CAN react, and use that number.
what’s crazy about the Devon Allen false start is that in semis he reacted in .101, so it’s not like .99 is out of the ordinary for him. he was also not the only athlete at the world championships to get DQed for a reaction time false start
no no you dont get it. you literally can't react 2 milliseconds faster. if you do, the fabric of reality splits in half and a black hole consumes the entire race track. some dude in a youtube comment section told me so it must be true
@@thenightjackal you're thinking of visual reaction times which have an upper limit of a little bit below 0.2, reacting to sound is MUCH faster and reactions under 0.1 of a second is quite ordinary even for you or I
@@faisallewis5902 there's no reaching going of with this, it's simply because humans are able to reach much faster to sounds than visual stimulus, this rule as been a problem against plenty of runners
The rule is there so that people don’t predict the start and get an unfair edge, but yeah that was just unlucky reaction time and a scuffed DQ (or too lucky?)
It's basically set up that way because for the sound to literally travel to your ear, and the signal to travel to your brain, takes 0.1 seconds. So if you react before that, you have jumped the gun and made a false start because it's physically impossible for you to have heard the starting pistol
@joe van vugt actually the time it takes for the quickest possible reaction time is 0.084 seconds so theoretically it is completely possible to be that quick without predicting it
It prevents people from gambling the gunshot. This was just an extra extreme case where it was within a millisecond of ok, but generally it makes sense.
@@Karynthian But this should never happen. It’s happened multiple times. It’s proven that people can react faster than .1 so the rule should be changed
I've always wondered why people get so upset at teabagging or taunts in games and it's good to know grown men react just as childishly in physical sports too
God I fucking hate this discourse, it's not the person reacting that's fucking cihildish lol. You adhd kiddies spam these obnoxious emotes and shit and then expect everyone to just allow it or else look 'triggered'. How about no? How about you just get a grip?
I know that grown adults are expected to “be the bigger person” in these scenarios, but by that logic, isn’t it just as childish for someone to taunt in such ways in the first place?
@@DanielTA9 it's not just as childish, its vastly more so. It's not childish at all to find people being deliberately annoying or provocative annoying.
For the hockey one, the reason that rule exist is because you are not allowed to hit a goalie so the goalie would have an advantage over other players if they were to take it.
@@ryan_alexander A goalkeeper is not “fair game” just because he is outside the goal crease. The appropriate penalty should be assessed in every case where an attacking player makes unnecessary contact with the goalkeeper. However, incidental contact will be permitted when the goalkeeper is in the act of playing the puck outside his goal crease provided the attacking player has made a reasonable effort to avoid such unnecessary contact. Source : Article 69.4 of the NHL rules (where Patrick Roy played). So it's not necessarily penalized, but more often then not.
@@LayzCamperr lol what are you on, your rule book knowledge is on par how you type "trapezoid". Goalies are almost untouchable on their crease and everywhere else too unless contact wasn't avoidable. Incidental "hitting" would reward you something ridiculous like major penalty, ejection and 10 game suspension.
6:47 The taunting rule is supposed to only apply when literally directed at the other team. Physical acts of celebration with your own teammates isn't supposed to be a penalty, so this is just a completely incorrect time to invoke the rule.
As a baseball fan it hurt me when he said no one is watching now. lol But hes right. Unless you already have a family member like a dad that likes it kids arent going into it on their own.
Clearly the players aren't doing anything to help it. I'm not American and this gave me the same impression as Soccer does which is that a lot of players are whiney unsportsmanlike babies. Baseball even seems worse with its whole fucking internal unwritten social politics and rules. Why would I watch a sport when it's more like watching politics? Doesn't seem very fun...
@@Mystery-pd6jc well to be fair its moving away from unwritten rules. I've actually seen ever baseball video he showed because I'm a baseball fan and watch a lot of baseball content. One of the videos is literally talking about how its happening less amd less as more and more fans aren't standing for it and want more emotion in the game. The video about Tatis hitting the grand slam had enormous fan out cry. That was in 2020 I was watching the league when that happened. So its definitely getting better in that regard. I'll link the video about it dying down more after I post this comment so I can go copy it in the app and post it in a comment edit. Here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FcRJ3XFeULM.html
Live games are just so slow. I love Baseball RU-vid. I'm subscribed to both the baseball channels Ludwig looked at in this vid, slow explinations of highlight moments are cool, and I think baseball might have some of the best sport stories ever. But the actual game can feel like allot of dead air and nothing, esspecially if you don't have context for some of the plays. Plus all the blatant cheating of pitchers using "Stick Stuff" to spped up their pitches is kinda lame.
@@esdonkyle1 im 30 now. The older I get the more I appreciate it. Its a 1v1 battle when you come down to it. Based on hand eye coordination, speed and strength as well as mind games from the pitcher and deception with pitches. Its such a beautiful amazing game. "Nothing" happens until everything happens, like lightling the players all work in harmony to field a ground ball and turn a double play. Its fuckin perfect. Extreme athleticism at a moments notice. And if you have friends over grilling or hanging out its the perfect background sport to have on the TV while yall do stuff and look over just in time to see that mammoth homerun. Long games that remind me of lazy summer days. I love everything about it man. Its just the best.
@@MrHeart12 off topic but you sound like the "old soul" mc of every wattpad story ever. not in a bad way, but in an "oh my god, this actually exists irl" way. super fascinating
Since it might not be immediately obvious, some of the creators featured in this video include Jomboy Media, Baseball Doesn't Exist, and judging by some of the other links, Secret Base (my personal favorite YT channel). I would seriously recommend all of these channels to anyone, including non-sports fans. Jon Bois' content on Secret Base in particular is some of the best data-based content on the internet, and he's one of Summoning Salt's main inspirations.
Last place id ever expect to hear Jomboys voice is on a Ludwig vid/stream hahaha. Im not even really into sports but jomboy makes great sports vids/content!
As a Packers fan, it’s so funny every time they abuse the kickoff rule because it gets called without fail and pisses the other team off. It’s the very definition of “don’t hate the player, hate the game”.
It's like in the Eyeshield 21 manga/anime where the weaker protagonist team abused every minute details in the rule and kept winning because of that. I like American Football for that aspect of strategy, not only you have to be fast & strong but also smart lol
I’m blown away that Lud didn’t look at the rules for women’s lacrosse. There’s a penalty if you shoot with someone other than the goalie in the way. It’s so dumb
I think it's because of how niche lacrosse is, much less women's lacrosse specifically. Though I could be wrong, I've never watched lacrosse a day in my life
The interview that runner gave after being DQd was golden, he said something along the lines of “it was all my fault honestly, there’s nobody else to blame, I need to make sure to go 1 thousandth of a second later next time.” Lol he had us in the first half
Just so you know lud, the tenth of a second rule was put in because usatf (United States Track and Field) had gotten ten, AND ONLY TEN, mediocre runners to be tested. They all had reaction times of over 0.1 so they thought that the most elite runners would not be under 0.1… smh.
i mean to be fair *most* elite runners cant react that fast, the problem is the select few that can get fucked because of it, i think this event has gotten enough media attention though that theyll prolly end up changing it from the first 0.1 to the first 0.075 or something along those lines that accomplishes the same goal but is actually essentially impossible
@@KRS_two 7 amateurs?!? What were the scientists thinking that’s not nearly enough of a sample size or a skill level to deem something “humanly impossible” that’s like me testing 7 random people on my track team and concluding that a sub 11 second 100m is humanly impossible.
6:25 I just had a conversation with my dad about this last night. His suggestion was to get rid of the DH so pitchers have to bat again, and if a pitcher hits a guy, then next time the pitcher is at bat, the guy he hits gets to pitch against him.
The football taunting call is even more egregious than you think. When the guy was running back to his sideline, the ref purposely ran into his path and bumped INTO HIM, and that’s when he threw the flag and called the taunting penalty. The ref had an insane power trip in that moment, and it actually affected the outcome of that game.
If they can already time when a runner reacts to the gun, why not just subtract that time from their ending time and get rid of false-starting altogether?
In baseball, you don’t just let the 3-0 pitch by for the PITCHER, you let it by because he hasn’t thrown a strike for three pitches, so he might not be able to on the fourth. The fourth pitch could result in an out instead of a free base, so you don’t swing most of the time.
I’m from Arizona, where Devon Allen is from, and I never watch live sports, but the one time that I tune in and put all my hopes and dreams on someone from the same state as me, he gets eliminated because of a one thousandth of a second false start. ONE THOUSANDTH.
I recommend doing basically the same video but with combat sports. MMA in particular have some very strange rules that had to be implemented on the fly because the sport used to be the wild west.
I had never heard of that rule until Tatis did that. All I knew is in a blowout you don't take extra bases on steals, pass balls, etc. But you know DAMN well I wanna see someone swing out of their ass on a 3-0 when they normally wouldn't. Rangers soft on that one.
Idk much about American football, but I feel like the out of bounds thing would make more sense if you could score a touchdown with just your foot being over the line. Otherwise the lines should only apply to the ball, not the players. I've always thought it was cool in AFL seeing the players run out of bounds with their arm stretched out holding the ball within the boundary line.
I know he's clowning on baseball the entire time but god does it make my heart feel warm having him react to my favorite player and former Cub, Javier Beaz
the devon allen incident was tough. that race was in eugene (where i live!) and he also went to college in eugene, so naturally everyone was cheering for him...
@@decay3670 it's all good, the Packers were the ones that showed you can master the exploitation of that rule, so they probably do have more highlights of that type than most teams anyway.
2nd clip is of Patrick Roy, the absolute GOAT of hockey goalies, inventor of the butterfly technique which every modern goalie uses now, and the only person to win the season MVP award 3 times AS A GOALIE. Him skating past the red is perfectly on-brand of testing the limits of what he could do.
Baseball has the dumbest rules and a lot of unwritten rules as well. …and no, if he intentionally throws you a ball. You go after him with the bat. Let’s see how that goes.
Yeah pitchers can get away with the "It just slipped out my hand!" excuse like once or twice but theres no way a batter is getting away with charging the mound
I don't even care about sports but a couple of these really irked me..... Particularly Tatis Jr. You can just see all his pride drain out of his face while his teammates scold him for playing well.
Baseball “unwritten” rules, is usually more of a respect thing. Like there’s nothing actually against doing any of that but it’s just like if you piss off the pitcher, yes they can just throw it at you
Man I didn’t realize that baseball has *unwritten* dumb toxic rule to just retaliate to the opposing team when they’re better. The only time when the sport actually need an offensive behavior rule. *Other Sports: Professional have standards.*
Hey Lud, your negative attitude reacting to the Drew video about Ninja was concerning. I don't think you should put Ninja on such a high pedestal. Check yourself mate and good luck
Shows you how great hockey is. The only "dumb rule" is really just for the safety of the goalie. Also, damn baseball players are weak. I was actually just thinking earlier today after watching a sports video about how long it's been since I watched baseball and how it needs to improve to be interesting.
Baseball pitchers are historically babies it has gone better in the past 4 years but there are still some pitchers that complain. Baseball itself is actually been doing a better job at keeping itself interesting and at promoting its up-and-coming stars especially in the past year and a half.
Hey some criticism, I watch your vids frequently and this one honestly felt like it added very little in terms of commentary. Usually I like watching for the extra little comments but a lot of these clips were just a bit more basic. For the Tati clip, it would have been more interesting if you pulled up some more of the follow-up and stuff. I know it's pulled from the stream, but just a comment. Love your stuff man keep it going.
I just counted it and excluding intro and outro you were fullscreened for 13 seconds. Not that you weren't talking and stuff, but idk I feel like its usually a lot more than that.
That kickoff rule happens in Rugby too, if its kicked after the half way line and the other opposing team doesnt touch it and it goes out, its a 50 meter scrum its GIGACHAD plays
The hockey one is because if you have a damn good goalie, the goalie can then catch the puck and drive it right down the line into the other teams net making every other player on the field completely irrelevant. With all other fielders matched 1 to 1 in attakers to defence. Which is comical in a casual game but gets ridiculous really fast in any pro game tournament. ...having said that, some goalies have taken it up to the mid field and still scored from there.
Yeah that rule applies to everything from the 100m dash to XC 5ks. In XC the don’t dq you (at hs and lower elo colligate levels) but in track I’ve seen a whole 4x8 team get dq’d bc he was a tenth of a second early, which let’s be honest, doesn’t matter a whole lot in a “distance race” (the 800 is a fucking sprint but they call it distance so whatever)
3 outs (I think) is an amazing anime that countered the bean ball, its called the bat release. You were so afraid of the ball the bat slipped directly at the pitcher at full speed, they'll think twice about that 2nd pitch.
