26:20 i just got done watching up to the point in which you completed the right sode and when you were talking about removing the rockers, i was thinking to myself, if you put the engine at TDC then the rockers will be loose and you wont be fighting them when reinstalling. Then i get to this part, and im like ohhhh okay good he does mention it hahaha 😂

Aaron, Yep, you don't have to put the Piston at Top Dead Center, but then you have to overcome the Lifter Spring Pressure (for Hydraulic Lifters). To give the Cylinder and Top of the Piston a good cleaning, you should move the Piston in the Bore anyway. When done, leave the Piston at TDC. - Stiles

I have a 25 horse Koehler motor on my 50” zero turn Cub Cadet tractor, that’s 20 years old. I need both head gaskets! Cost is about $1200. I was thinking of buying a new zero turn, but with the cost of new ones and now, I hear they are made by MTD, I think I’ll get the gaskets replaced. I’ve taken really good care of it, so everything else seems good. I’m a 😮72 years old woman and still do all my own yard work, edging, trimming, hailing dirt or mulch for a very large yard. They don’t make the zero turn tractor, anymore, but they put a steering wheel on the regular type zero turn. The mechanic at my dealer suggested I sell it for around $600. I’m torn on what to do. I’d go from a 50” cut down to a 46” to save a little $$. I thought of getting a yard service to mow, but that’s $50 a week or $1800 a year and going up, so that’s not an option. What would you do if you were me?

Gebhard, Staying active is what keeps us young, so I hope you keep doing it yourself! 20 years, sounds old, but its about the hours you have on the Mower. Lawn service people put many, many hours on their Equipment. I'd say based on what you said, I find a second opinion, get a second quote on replacing your Head Gaskets and keep your Old Mower. Let me know how it goes! - Stiles

$1200 sounds way high I could do the job for around $500, and would include a valve job as well. I know many people tell me I'm too cheap. Still $1200 sounds ridiculous.

I just finished this same job on my CV730. The exception, I had a valve job done. I had checked the compression before and after. Cylinder #1 was 115 #2 was 117 afer #1 was 130 #2 was 160. Why the good cylinder increased so much more is beyond me. However I'm certain it needs rings as well. Its on a Murray 40 inch cut. I'm sure Murray never used this engine on a 40 inch cut before, nore use dual exhaust. It was easier than trying to use a single muffler. Plus I left the the exhaust on until I removed the heads. Then put them back on after the valve job.

Luckily you had nuts on the exhaust flanges .Some Courage engines have torques head machine screws that limit options for removing them.I recently did this head gasket replacement and found it would have been a time saver to remove the engine.The left cylinder being lower to the frame will not allow easy removal oft he flange screws and almost impossible to put them back in to complete the job as there is very little room.
@StilesAutomotive

Phil, Geez, man, that is ugly. That is the worst location to use a Torx Head ( or an Allen Head for that matter) Fastener. Don't get me started on poor Fastener Selection and Use. Yep, my Kohler Engine has Studs and Nuts, a good choice because the Studs help you locate the Exhaust Manifold on the Cylinder. I appreciate the comment! - Stiles

Your video is so informative that I decided to change a blown head gasket on my 25 hp v-twin Koehler engine. I removed the right head and changed the gasket with out a hitch so I decided to change the left head gasket as well. I went through the same steps but before replacing the head I discovered a pea size bearing on the mat where I cleaned the head. I don’t know where it came from and didn’t see any bearing’s on the right side when I replaced the head. I’m at a standstill until I find out where this bearing belongs. Do you have any comment on where this pea size bearing came from or where it may belong. Thank you!
@StilesAutomotive
@StilesAutomotive 5 месяцев назад
User-Z, Are you saying an individual Ball Bearing? Do you think it came from inside the Head, like from the Push-Rod chamber? I'm not sure here . . . I'd guess it is from the Steering Quadrant at the base of the Steering Shaft or something . . . - Stiles

Good job and thanks for the post. Just want to add a coupleof things- Laquer thinner is oil based and isno good for gasket surfaces. I'm sure its no issue with the crushring gaskets but acetone or alchohol is best. The idle is way too low and that adj screw below the cable bracket needs to be adjusted. Also, I didn't see any exhaust pipe gaskets. Maybe they don't use them? Thanks again.
@StilesAutomotive
@StilesAutomotive Год назад
Glenn, You are very welcome. Yep, true, on your Thinner comment. I've always used Lacquer Thinner (or Enamel Reducer) on mating surfaces, because I have it readily available in my shop for painting. I haven't had a problem with RTVs or other sealants sticking to the surfaces, but you are right, hitting it with alcohol would be best! Yes, Exhaust Gaskets are used. The Exhaust Gaskets are shown in the video at 15:22 when talking about the new Head Gasket. And lay the Exhaust Gaskets on the left and right Tires at 44:22 to stage them for assembly onto the Heads. I appreciate the comment! - Stiles

Changed ignition coils, carb, spark plugs, air filter, and head gaskets and still getting white smoke it looks like its coming from the exhaust, also the exhaust turned red hot. Running lean? Maybe needs adjustment of the carb fuel mixture. What do you think could be the issue?
@StilesAutomotive
@StilesAutomotive Месяц назад
Mayo, You leave me with a few questions. First of all, "white smoke" is normally water or coolant, this is an air cooled Engine, which makes me think, excess Fuel. If you are burning Engine Oil, it would be darker, blacker, or grey. What does it smell like, Gas, Oil, Water? 2) When you replaced the Head Gaskets, did you see a bad spot like I show in my Video? So you know there was a problem with the old Gasket? Are the Spark Plugs fouling out? Is water getting into your Muffler? 3) Yes, running lean will cause your Exhaust to be hotter, also if your Camshaft timing is off. Let me know how it goes! - Stiles

@StilesAutomotive Год назад
Eyes, You are welcome! Yep, most likely the Head Gasket. Can you feel back on the cylinder (or see) if the Oil is flowing from the Crankcase? One advantage is your Engine always has clean Oil in it. Just be careful not to run it low on Oil. Let me know how it goes! - Stiles

@@StilesAutomotive Your tutorial was much appreciated. I just finished the replacement on my GT1554. I do have a follow up question. I powered on for 30 seconds and I could see whitish (not black for a change) exhaust but some was coming back out where the exhaust manifold enters the muffler. Some was coming out the muffler exit port as expected but I was surprised to see the "backwash" effect. I think it was mainly affecting the right side which I guess is logical because the left side is quite close to the muffler exhaust port. On my machine, the manifold pipes enter the muffler in the forward direction and the exhaust blows to the left side. Your pipes drop downwards into the muffler but the basics are the same. Any thoughts?

Congratulations. At 23.50 you over-torqued the head bolts by torqueing them TWICE. I see so many people do this on these repair videos, it blows my mind!! If you can't trust your torque wrench the first time, why bother trusting it twice?? Seriously, I took a course on torque and one thing the instructor stressed was to NOT torque the same bolt twice (at it's final torque value). Also, whenever you set a torque wrench to a new/different setting, you should pre-stress it by torqueing a "dummy" nut at least three times. That helps the torque wrench settle out at the desired setting. And finally, just FYI, when you are done using a torque wrench, set it back to the lowest setting possible on the tool and put it in its case. Torque wrenches should be calibrated annually by an accredited standards lab too, but not everyone can afford to have that done, so I can understand that. Otherwise, very good video.
