The Collaboration Of Ideas: The "Yes, And"
"Yes, and" is also effectively used in creative brainstorming conversations. Instead of having a series of stand-alone ideas, "yes, and" can lead to collaborative ideas within groups. An easy way to practice this is by using a simple tangible product - I usually use a cupcake in development sessions. After pitching my idea for a cupcake, another person will affirm my idea, then add a creative "and" to it. Another person affirms, then adds another creative "and" to that idea. It might sound something like:
Person A: I have an idea for a new cupcake.
Person B: Yes, and that cupcake will have amazing icing.
Person C: Yes, and that icing will be all natural.
Person D: Yes, and those all-natural flavors will also have all of your daily vitamins.

What he says about children playing is so true! Imaginary play is a crucial part of childhood. It's so important for cognitive development, which is important for problem solving and critical thinking. Life is full of challenges and critical thinking helps us get through them. As with all skills in life, development starts at birth. Being imaginative is being creative. Another thing he mentioned is the benefit of adults playing with children. It's true! We should allow ourselves to be youthful and playful. Get down on the floor and play with your toddlers! Go out with your tween for a game of bowling. Or play a board game at your Dining Room table. If you didn't have a youthful childhood, do it with your children. Now that can be very therapeutic! (If you didn't receive sincere affection, find it in you to give it to your children.) So many ways to connect, both to your children and to your inner child. The difference between people is that some adults are mature while others are unfortunately not.

I laugh a lot even when things aren't always well. Kind of a woody Allen thing.
