Last month we launched our new Healthy Ageing and Prevention Index which ranks 153 countries on six healthy ageing metrics, including life span, health span, work span, income, environment and happiness.
For the first time we can track progress, comparing whether countries have improved, or dropped between 2019 and 2022. In other words we can get a good picture of where the UK was pre pandemic and where we as a country have ended up after it.
In our latest video, Arunima Himawan, ILC's Senior Health Policy and Research Manager explains that we need a shift in policy from the next government to keep more of us healthier for longer.
Essentially we’re seeing that people are living longer, healthier and richer lives, but are unhappier and working less in a country that is less environmentally sustainable than before.
Together these findings paint a picture of a UK that isn’t adapting to longevity fast enough. We need strong and bold leadership to ensure the UK continues to move in the right direction.
Current measures aren't working and we need a shift in our thinking. This includes:
* greater investment in prevention
* a shift in resources from secondary and acute care to primary and community-based care.
* for government to have a bigger role in keeping its citizens healthy
Such a shift is vital if we want to shrink the 19 year difference in healthy life expectancy between the least and most deprived areas of the country.
