Jeff, after so many years I am pretty close to nail it down to a science every tripped breaker situation (when tripped for no reason). What I do in this case is the following and I have never ever get another call from the same customer for a tripped breaker: 1/Replace the capacitor (doesn't matter the readings); 2/Install a hard start kit (NOT the Chinese made, there is American made that works the best); 3/Bump the breaker up in the disconnect box (if any) or in the breaker panel with 5 amps. I guarantee you personally, you will never get a call back again and customers are going to believe you are a Saint!

Another thing I check is LRAs on compressor. But alot of good info here. Great job!

yep, check inrush current on a 20a breaker is less than inrush capacity of a 30a breaker, as the nameplate calls for

you fuse to the ocp rating and wire to the mca. That unit needs a 30a breaker as the name plate calls for. The 18.6a exceeds the 80% rule for a 20a breaker, that is why it calls for a 30a breaker.

Just a standard plastic outdoor disconnect. Made by Midwest.

I was beginning to think that I was one of the only people who use the HVAC school app for under load capacitor testing. 😂

Had to redo this comment since the yt police didn't like the link to a video that applies here... NEC 440.4(B) allows the 30amp breaker in accordance with the nameplate. There are exceptions to the usual ampacity rules for Air conditioning loads and certain other equipment. In this case, overload protection is provided by the compressor and fan motors, the breaker is only for protecting the wire from short circuits or hard ground faults. #12cu at the 75degC table is good for 25 amps anyways. So since this unit's max FLA total is 15.1 you're ok on the wire. See Mike Holt's channel using the Code section above for a detailed video explanation.

Thanks for this man. Appreciate it! Seems I would have been good with the 30 amp then.

I hate it when yt does that. They never warn you or tell you how to correct it.

In residential you are only allowed by the NEC to use the 60degC rating for the #12 wiring regardless of what it can carry in the 75 or 90 column of the table. Look at NEC Table 310.16 and you will see asterisks for #14, #12, #10 wiring referring to section 240.4(D) Your minimum circuit ampacity is what you would use to size your wire to the unit based off 310.16 for wire size. The Minimum Circuit Ampacity is 18.6, so #12 wire is suitable for this application unless it has excessive voltage drop due to length of run or the equipment is considered a continuous load. Residential A/C condensing/Heat pump units are not considered a continuous load unless it runs for over 3 hours at a time. No calculation needed, as the manufacture has already taken the 15.1A total FLA load current and applied any necessary % factors to come up with a total current of 18.6 amps as the minimum circuit ampacity. This is what you apply the 115% factor to determine the breaker size Which would equal 21.4 amps. The nameplate requires an HCAR type rated breaker if using a breaker instead of fuses so a 20Amp HCAR breaker should be good.

@@phildegruy9295 HVAC takes exception the the 60deg C rule as noted in the Code reference above. Go watch Mike Holt's video he goes into detail and they specifically point out the use of the 75c column in that table. Residential or not, in this case, it does not matter. I went round and round on this in my early days as an electrician, since I was always told, _with NO exceptions_ that #12 could NEVER be fused/protected at greater than 20 amps. But 440.4(B) clearly spells out the exceptions. And a wise HVAC contractor will use the max allowable breaker to avoid nuisance trips caused by high ambient or a compressor that it a bit hard starting. Even a 30amp breaker WILL trip well before the wire is even warmed up, by a locked rotor or excessive hard start cycle.

If there are any new hvac techs watching this…. Dont ever check a capacitor under a load. Turn power off and check it then. You will never miss diagnose a capacitor if you check it with power off

Nothing wrong with checking a capacitor under load.
