I mean it makes sense, right? If I give it fresh air and get rid of the hot air it blows out that should work...right?

Excellent demonstration!.....Two years ago, I bought a "modern" inverter portable a/c (even had a heat pump). It also had an intake as well as an exhaust hose. The problem with this unit was, that on a super hot day, the exhaust hose would heat up the room thereby degrading the performance. Needless to say, back to Home Depot it went. I eventually went with a Midea 12k btu "inverter" window unit with heat pump (model # MAW12HV1CWT, this is NOT the U-shape unit). Could not be happier.

Turn the concept around. Throw the AC unit outside, and duct IN the cold air. That way the compressor can run freely, and you don't have to hear the roaring unit next to you.

This was actually something I considered at first because it would of worked way better but I ran out of design time. Pretty easy to convert it to do that though.

This actually does work. There were a few 1950s beach cottages on Fort Myers Beach which did exactly this. They were on stilts, so the window ACs were hung underneath the house and they just cut a hole in the floor and ran ducts into the house that way. Worked surprisingly well and also very quiet inside. They even wired them to line voltage thermostats inside. From inside you'd never know it wasn't central air.

What if u add a booster fan they use for hvac system on the exhaust hose or on both would it still be straining the compressor or if it’s does work how’s the efficiency don’t think them booster fans pull to much amps regardless old ac units are tanks compared to newer ones
@JoelCrager

Really enjoyed your video is a very clever idea you got there on that. With that being a thru wall ac with way the exhaust air flows through then out condenser instead of the fan right behind it. I have not seen a ac like that. You are right on having the bigger size hoses that would of helped, but I have an idea you can try if not too late to take care of that. They make in line exhaust fans in a 6 inch size that normally are put on furnace and boiler vent pipes that you could put on your inlet hose to blow more air into the unit or put on the exhaust side to pull more air out. That would help the fan in the ac as it was not designed to have the extra restriction from the hoses. The fan is around 25 bucks though an are 120v. I hope you make it through the 2 weeks before you get your central air ok. Being hot and trying to sleep doesnt work too well. Thanks for the cool evening. Oh yeah forgot to ask you what was you going to do about the condensate from the evaporator coil?

@@CelGenStudios meh, realistically you could just make a tray that the unit could sit in. Or add a drain hose kit and route it to a container. Down here in Seattle on Monday I got 2.8 gallons out of my samsung 8'000 btu window unit, 24 hr period, drains into a bucket that feeds my raspberries. On my smaller 5'000btu I have a fabric siphon setup. Essentially a 14x20in furnace filter connected to the drain pan with a guaze sheet so it doesn't drip into the well for the basement window directly below it. Just evaporates

Maybe room air instead of using outside air on the intake line? Can that work?
@VinceIsDatBitch
@VinceIsDatBitch 2 года назад
The problem with this is that it would need additional insulation on the tubes and on the wooden enclosure which further raises complexity.

No. Never do this. Running a horizontal AC vertically will starve the compressor of oil and will likely burn it out.

Why not an in-line duct fan helping to expel (suck the outlet air) back outside, in turn aiding in condenser temp and overall efficiency?

@@TonyaDLewis Hey! Welcome to another miserable summer, right?! Well, I retired the unit because of the amount of heat generated by the window unit. I have a laser business I run out of my garage and it’s not good for me or my machines but I tied into the exhaust duct for my ventilation for my machines. All in all, I’m liking the reply below mine about ducting in the air. Makes more sense to draw cold air in more than to try getting rid of heat from an already hot spot. I’m going to jig up a fitting to cover the vents with a 4” duct running into the garage and put an in-line fan towards the end (me) and see how that works. I just have to control the AC unit or it would constantly be running in this Death Valley heat! 😂 Check back in a few days, I’ll start on it today! Until then….

@DandyDon1
@DandyDon1 2 года назад
I know now that with central HVAC this is now moot, but there were no case window AC units available? As you probably know, window AC units are terribly inefficient.
@DandyDon1

BTW is that a big Copelametic compressor off to the side? Commercial refrigeration anyone? ;)
@DandyDon1
@DandyDon1 2 года назад
I wonder how much heat is being dissipated back into the room from the exhaust hose. Maybe it would have better to put the unit outdoors, and pipe the cold air into the room. That way the heat from the compressor et al would be exhausted outdoors instead of indoors.

Terribly inefficient? Not so fast. My emergency window AC has an EER (not SEER) of 10.7 and is nearly 15 years old. No ductwork losses and great dehumidificiation. In 2023, EnergyStar qualifying split ACs only need an EER of 12 or greater to qualify. Package units only need An EER of 11.5. Some new winds ACs have EERs of 15, far more efficient than a split central AC.

Experimentally I found I needed to pull 300 CFM of air with a six inch hose per 5000 BTU's to get the same temperature as not enclosed. 200 CFM gave a 30 degree F differential instead of 20 degree F.

Hold on to that air conditioner. Those old units will out live generations of modern junk. Those old reciprocating compressors are so much more robust and preform much better as well.
