Assuming they’d go with the military origin story: they’d probably have him be a soldier deployed to Afghanistan, being assigned to a squad that he’d become close with. They’d designate different call-signs for each other, and his would be “Joker” since he’d be the funny guy in the squad. Maybe he’d take this to heart and put a Joker card in his helmet or something. Then when him and his squad are in a truck, it explodes from a landmine and he’s the only survivor with no working radios or anything to use to call for backup. Finally to parallel DKR, he’d make the long trek back to America, going AWOL after going insane and convincing himself he was left for dead. It would be then that his old persona would die and “The Joker” would be born. He’d eventually return to Gotham, his hometown, donning a clown outfit as his own bizarre way of honoring his fallen comrades, and deadset on having revenge by causing chaos.

Why so serious
@philipwhitcomb5358
@philipwhitcomb5358 3 года назад
My belief is that the Joker could have been a soldier once but was more likely working for a covert government agency thus why he’s great at weapon handling, war tactics, intimidation, etc. I believe he was captured by the enemy and tortured to the point of madness and completely abandoned by the government which would also explain why there is absolutely no record of him whatsoever. He may have even possibly been a soldier before working for a government agency, which definitely wouldn’t help with his PTSD, which is why referencing a group of soldiers being blown up means more to him. Just my thoughts.
@codieomeallain6635
@codieomeallain6635 2 года назад
He was a soldier and a group, maybe his, got blown up. When his tour was over he was recruited by a government agency, CIA probably since the Agency does take on veterans as contractors. He was given the code name “Joker” and all his records were classified above top secret when he was sent on an infiltration mission which is why he is not in any databases. He was caught and the CIA burned him, cutting all ties and denying any connection leaving him to be tortured which is how he got his scars. Eventually he managed to escape, psychologically broken and with a deep hatred of the system which betrayed him and now tries to destroy it.
@pjthehomelessmage
@pjthehomelessmage 2 года назад
@@codieomeallain6635 both of these conclusions make the most sense to me. Also alluding to the point in the movie where he refers to how he got his scars from his father he probably wasn’t actually harmed physically just scarred mentally which is why he says why so serious and let’s put a smile on that face. Where he alluded to his wife though she probably actually had scars and when he returned after escaping or being released from whoever tortured him later in life and appearing with similar scars she I think she did leave him after drifting and being homeless for a while and ending up in Gotham and his story continued from there. TLDR mentally scarred by father, get married, wife scarred still love her, served in military spec ops, team died and was covered up, hired by gov to be contractor, captured and tortured, left to burn, escape/released, return home wife horrified and left him, no money drifter, end up in Gotham, now as mentally sane as the Comedian, fights for chaos and to sow distrust in Batman.

And wrong. Batman killed Harvery Dent and turned to surveilance of all of Gotham to find the Joker, showing that there really is no depth (this version of) the Batman won't stoop to for his sense of morality. He really did show that the Batman can't be trusted with the power he has and even Bruce realizes it, handing it over to Fox, who destroys it.

@YoungD3mon314 a random civilian probably will be thrown off balance from the kick back while firing RPG.. hence reduce the accuracy. so, this still a plus for ex-army joker theory
@libertatemadvocatus1797
@libertatemadvocatus1797 5 лет назад
@@flatearth245 Hate to be do a douche, but you're actually wrong. RPGs actually have almost no recoil because the blast from the propellant exits out the back. Firearms have recoil because the energy from the ignition of propellant is pushed back into the gun. However, with rocket launchers, the energy is directed from the back which itself is often lethal to about 10+ feet from the back. Also, the RPG-7 has excellent accuracy at about 100 yards where even someone with minimal training can hit a moving target at about 96% of the time according to US Army studies. Enough, with the nitpicking. I agree with the theory of an ex-military Joker. He is clearly competent with a number of different firearms (from pistols to submachine guns to rifles), he knows how to work with explosives (his grenade suicide vest, the aforementioned RPG-7, the bomb at the hospital, and gasoline bombs for Harvey and Rachel), he has organizational skills (he was able to get groups as diverse as professional bank robbers, street thugs, and the mentally ill to work efficiently to achieve a task), he is familiar with interrogations (being on either end of them), and his fighting style is clearly far more refined than street brawling, but lacks elaborate kicks or clean combos, it focuses on quick moves that are meant to seriously injure or kill his opponent (which is very similar to combatives taught in various armed forces). It is perfectly plausible the Joker was someone like a Green Beret or CIA Special Operations Group. Someone who is trained in a wide variety of skills with leadership ability and a significantly higher competence level than your average soldier. It's possible that what he had to and what he experienced lead him to become bitter and cynical and turn his skills against a society that he found hypocritical. Many war veterans talk about how war reveals the worst impulses in humanity on both the individual and group level and how quickly even otherwise nice and civilized men quickly become sadistic beasts. Of course, there's also the possibility he was always bad. Not every bad person in the military got that way due to trauma suffered in war or being brutalized in training. Some people go into the service fucked in the head. It's possible he was always a sick bastard and joined the military because it would give him the chance to kill people. Despite popular belief, the Special Forces tend to avoid letting in sociopaths and psychopaths (because they are unpredictable and treacherous), but some still slip through. His sadism and blood lust could have served him well in combat, but the skills he learned in the service just created someone far more dangerous.

I agree with you. The Joker’s story requires a man, a sensitive, intelligent, and passion man, to be crushed and then to rise again in a new form. Like the Phoenix rising from the ashes. Places and situations that can crush a man’s spirit include, but are not limited to, war, love, and dreams. When that part of you dies, what’s left is forced to remain alive and live in this world. It is the process of continuing to live when a part, a big part of you is dead, that a man chooses to be Batman or the Joker. Batman’s childhood died when his parents were killed. To continue living, Bruce Wayne became Batman. With the Joker, something he loved and cared for deeply died. With his choice to live, he became the Joker. It’s the same tragedy that Bruce Wayne faced. The Joker, equally as talented as Batman, simply chose another path. The Joker is a performance artist. Look at his face paint. The Joker, like an actor in a movie, is trying to tell us something. The message is: there are many here among us that feel life is but a joke. The Joker’s Nihilism is a reaction to severe emotional trauma. To get even, to prove his point, or to establish moral or intellectual superiority, the Joker is going to prepare his shit sandwich and make us all take a bite.

I agree with this theory, but with a slightly different spin on it. The writers said that they were working on the thought that the Jokers' Glasgow smile was self-afflicted. I think it was partly both. As a soldier, I imagine the Joker seeing his squad blown up in a truck that he was MEANT to be in, and perhaps either the initial explosion or some munitions that went off right after caused HALF of his smile and knocking him unconscious. Next, I picture the Joker, while recovering at headquarters, overhearing their officers discussing the operation he was a part of. When questioned about casualties, the officers respond that they were within "acceptable losses." This leads to the Jokers bit about how "nobody panics when everything goes according to plan. Even when the plan is horrifying." Also, it wouldn't be much of a stretch to imagine his squads callsign had "Joker" in it. Anyway, the realization that society at large is cruel and uncaring could make him angry and vengeful.

I've been thinking about this particular comment since I was it years ago. And this is my head canon now, even tho I have absolutely no evidence for it. Amanda Waller and her agency is one the big bads of the Nolan verse along with the league of shadows, Joker was an agent of Waller's suicide squad that went rogue and fell off the grid where he ended up in Gotham. Which is why they can't find any of his fingerprints or other dna on their database.

He clearly has advanced weapons training, interrogation and illicitation training, explosives employment and manufacturing training, forensic training, no dental, medical or personal records anywhere, knows proper drill procedures for a funeral, knows how to organize, recruit, and supervise a guerrilla esqe resistance against conventional forces. Not phased by gunshots, explosions, yelling or screaming, all of which are traits shared by many combat veterans, especially those who have high op tempo and deploy a lot. If you look at the premise of the movie it draws parallels unmistakably (almost painfully) to America's surveillance debate post 9/11. In which surprise surprise (and believe me I remember) a HUGE amount of people wanted to enlist into the military. Many of which came back with PTSD, missing limbs, dead family members etc. A tragedy.
@iank4028
@iank4028 4 года назад
i disagree for many of those points. For “advanced weapons training” he doesn’t handle firearms professionally at all and all while proficient with firearms, in no way utilizes them like a proper soldier. Advanced weapons training isn’t just about hitting your target, it’s about understanding the applications for different weapon systems and how to use them as effectively as possible which he does not show at all. For interrogation and illicitation i agree in some respects but i don’t think he needs to be a soldier to understand things that anybody with a degree in psychology knows. I completely disagree with explosives and demolitions as anybody with access to the internet and their local department store can create remote explosives, especially with field manuals such as improvised munitions 31-210 out there creating explosives is not something unique to military personnel. What you said about understanding basic guerrila warfare and destabilizing a formal opponent is also not exclusive to military personnel. My main point being while he might be proficient in certain areas that typical special forces operators are also proficient in, in most cases he could’ve have either googled how to do it, read a book on it, or just practiced a skill like hitting targets with firearms. edit: i didn’t bring up the records about dental and fingerprints in my comment as i have no clue as to how that is done but my guess is it was probably done to create a sense of mystery from a writing standpoint and wasn’t supposed to be a main plot point but if it was there’s many ways to alter or even remove your fingerprints through the use of acid and pins and i’m not too familiar with dental records so i don’t know about those.

I also reached a similar conclusion, though I'd give him a bit more credit and thought of him as a black ops CIA handler rather than a more frontline Special Ops. The skillset would match ever so slightly more: the conducting and execution of plans, weapons training and a better set of diplomatic skills which could also come into play on both sides of interrogation. Being a close tie to the CIA would also mean they would more readily be able to bury his details and deny his existence should his operations be found out (personally I think this happened and they used Arkham to hide him away from prying eyes). The fact mentioned that his clothes had no labels: this is something done by international spies to better conceal their identities should they be killed (thanks Unsolved!). The last thing left would be motive: The Dark Knight's Joker seem to care about nothing but anarchy as you've said: I reckon if he was a buried CIA operative, he'd have essentially spent a good few years essentially helping pull strings behind the curtains in order to maintain society as we know it, meaning that when he's made to disappear, he's been betrayed by the system he's helped preserve and his one real motive at that point (as an angry, dangerous man who doesn't exist) is to topple it, using insight he's gained from years of upholding it. I guess it also sort of represents a form of opposite to Batman, a man like anyone else (deep down at least) who clearly has a lot to lose and wears a mask to protect those things; vs the Joker, a man stripped of his position in the system, whose only sense of identity left is to put on a mask of his own and show the world just how little he has to lose and how much he can gain.

I have to say Heath Ledger did so well as the Joker he basically ruined the live action role, I'm not sure anyone can top his performance. This is also the most plausible theroy. A mobster or basic criminal wouldn't necessarily have the skills to take down a government, in this case a city but still. Not to mention go toe to toe with a master martial artest and tactician like Batman. A Spec-Ops guy however is a completely different story.

I know it's been awhile since you've covered this topic. I have an extra thought to add for consideration into this Joker's origin. I agree that the joker has extensive military training, but the loss of his original self could also be attributed to a long term, deep undwrcover spy. Having returned home after his mission was complete but with nothing to really ground himself to his original name. He would have lost himself between who he was suppose be and the character he created for himself during his mission. His facial scars would be some of the many he would have inflicted upon his body in a crazed effort to straighten his thoughts out. In the end leaving his memories and personality shattered. As the Joker once said. "If I'm going to have a past. I prefer it to be multiple choice."

It's weird to me that not only did Joker seem like a war veteran, his actions came from his beliefs on what Gotham should be. It seems like he's acting patriotic in his own twisted way, taking matters in his own hands for the sake of his country. This is supported by the fact that he wanted to prove that Gotham was never a great place full of good people. So my theory is that Joker wants to "upset the established order" because, the city is already corrupt and when people will finally rise up, he would've accomplished his goal of making Gotham a better place with acts of terrorism.
@turningwiseau5340
@turningwiseau5340 5 лет назад
Also I forgot to mention, the Joker did seem upset when the bombs on either ship didn't go off and he had to do it himself, but he probably didn't think that it was so much of a rising up moment and it was only a small sign of good people there, so he had low expectations and maybe he didn't think it was good enough. People are free to question me on this theory. Another reason why I had this theory in mind was that, Joker killed a majority of gang members in this movie. What Joker had in mind for killing the gang members was to show ultimately how much of failures these criminals were due to the Batman beating them up out there most of the time and how small of group they are now that Falconi's gone. However I think this is just so he can make his terrorist plan work so no other criminal can get in the way. Same thing applies to Gotham's police department. Think about it, these cops weren't really feeling like doing their job before Batman came around and a majority of them are corrupt, so Joker was trying to eliminate that majority in order for them to think about their actions. Joker also attended a march in disguise for Harvey Dent's DA election (or at least I think, my memory's all fuzzy since the last time I watched the movie) and tried to kill him to prove that Gotham has no savior. Batman couldn't be a savior either, because he doesn't have full trust of the people. One final reason for why the theory could work is that Joker was going to have an appearance in The Dark Knight Rises. Before Health Ledger died, the Joker was originally supposed to make a cameo in that movie. He was going to be in a prison cell watching the news where Bane is getting the public's attention by reading Commissioner Gordon's secret statements on Harvey and why he's not everything citizens think he is and this gets the Joker smiling. I'm sure you can infer on how that detail supports the theory if you seen the whole movie.

Them not blowing each other up wasn’t a sign of “good people”; it was a sign of weak people. No one wants to get their hands dirty, and no one wants to take action. His entire plot revolves around bringing the people to action. Ras Al Ghul even eludes to this innate weakness in humans. Specifically, he calls out Bruce’s dad for not having the gumption to act. The Joker was literally trying to beat that weakness out of people. Some people might point out that The Joker thought people could be “mad” just like him. Except, Joker doesn’t think himself as a madman. In fact, he thinks himself enlightened. When he’s first talking with the mob bosses, someone calls him crazy, to which he replies, “I’m not crazy...”. Later on, he tells Batman that he’s (The Joker) just, “ahead of the curve”.

Brilliant analysis, I’ll try to add on this. My then-gf saw the movie before me, was fascinated with the character and his background. She reached the same conclusion as our author here did. So she asked me to watch the movie, knowing that I have very similar background to the one Joker supposedly has. She didn’t say anything about her theory, but cautioned me that we’ll talk after I watch the movie. So, it’s an issue that I was drawn to very early on. My modest opinion: Joker was indeed an ex-military. Moreover, he was in a special operations unit, legit or dark. He operated behind the enemy lines (he wields a variety of weapons throughout the course of the movie). Moreover, he was in the military intelligence. His methods in the game theory,stratagem and negotiations with mob bosses all point out that he was interrogator of particularly hard cases. A complete lack of his data from the records indicate that even his military record was erased (not classified, because police would get for his fingerprints a positive match, but would not be able to reach to the files). Interrogation scene is, of course, interesting. If Joker is such a vet, why he doesn’t fight Batman? 1) he doesn’t have to, he has all the cards; 2) he cannot defeat man in such suit, so he’s conserving energy “for the phone call”. Laughing on the physical torture is one of methods that members of special ops are trained to, by the way. But, it is probably not true that Joker has no people that know him, and he trusts them (children, siblings, parents, buddies from military days). His suit is custom-made, there are no indications on him from where is he. He is wearing paint to avoid face recognition software, as it has been showed in the movie itself, how the software was struggling to match him. Much like Batman, Joker is protecting somebody. In the end, he ended in captivity and was probably tortured and disfigured, and got himself from the captivity or with the help of non-government agents. His resentment, accompanied with PTSD, probably many other issues turned to the “moral code” of the “civilised people” as highly hypocritical (a common theme among ex-military vets). My apologies for such a long post, but it has been a recurring topic of some movie discussions in my past 10 years.

That's what I liked most about Heath Ledger's portrayal of the Joker: You really didn't know much about his origins other than his early childhood abuse at the hands of his father. He remained a mystery, an enigma, someone who you would use your imagination to try and solve the puzzle regarding his background, but could never quite piece everything together. Was he a disgruntled war veteran who felt betrayed by the very government he once trusted with his life? Or maybe even a former police officer who grew bitter after being wrongfully terminated by the same system he swore to uphold? Or maybe, he was simply just some delusional mental patient with a twisted grudge against society for no apparent reason whatsoever. Perhaps he really DID want to "watch the world burn" ... but the question is, WHY? What drove him to that point? There's usually a reason for a retribution, but will we ever know the truth? So many questions, so few answers.

I dont think leto failed. He didnt have a real character build up like heath ledger joker did. Dar knight was like a 3 hr movie. Suicide squad was long but had to split time with other characters villains and the story line itself. Dark knight story lone was based soley on the building of the jokers character and the battle between batman. Dark knight is a master piece within itself. This Phoenix joker may be very abstract and not exactly like we see the joker. Itll have a more realistic feel to it. Like maybe the 20's and 30's scary clowns. Very distorted facial paint the creepy you out moreso.

I honestly believe that the Joker in the nolanverse was a cynical person that hated society. He then went to the military to give himself purpose in life. After he was finished, he probably still felt a void in his life and hated society even more. Basically, I believe his goal in the movie was to destroy society itself, the good and bad parts of society. And my guess why he antagonizes Batman is because Joker believes he gives false hope to a corrupt society. This was my own theory on the Heath Ledger Joker.

I think he was a soldier who had a very specific outlook on life. I think he gave himself the scars, possibly after suffering a ptsd breakdown after watching a truck full of his best friends get blown up. It showed him the irony of life, that one mayor is being threatened and everyone loses their minds, but nobody gives a fuck about all those soldiers that lost their lives. After that, he gave himself the scars, ran around ripping off mob dealers and learning the game for a decade or two, until he left his calling card at the end of the first Batman movie.

That is why Heath Ledgers performance worked so well, there was no clear confirmed backstory. Intentional or not, but it does seem likely they took inspiration from "The Killing Joke" -“If I’m going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice!”- If it was intentional in the movies to have it displayed the way they did, genius. If not, it worked out brilliantly. Each of the Joker backstories was presented to an audience that would sympathize with it (potentially) by which, with the audiences perception of the characters, would feel more real despite our distrust in Joker telling the truth. Parental abuse (mob) Wife [betrayal/abandonment?/](Rachel) potential reference to military past (Harvey Dent) and the opening at the end (Batman) where he didn't get to say it before he was interrupted. Out of everyone the Joker may have told his true story to, it would have been the Batman. That he wasn't allowed to, could have been a callback to the Killing Joke. 3 Backstories, with a potential fourth. Each one is plausible and relatable. Each one shows how someone in that circumstance could have become the Joker. You could pick any one and fill in his story and have ends meet. If you had a single or confirmed story it would feel dull. It was Jokers varied complexity of character, with all his examples on how he could have become what he was, that made him such an excellent personality or character. The audience could interpret any or create more backstories and they could potentially fit. So long as the endings met, The Joker was his calling card and himself. His past didn't matter.

Ty Nao We don’t really know since we don’t have a clear, canon answer to what he was like or who he was before the Dark Knight. That’s why we have this theory, there’s just enough to go on in order to make a theory like it. You said in another comment he was never accepted in society “since birth”, how would you know? If that was a common fact we wouldn’t have these theories. But it isn’t, meaning your word means just as much/little as this RU-vid video. And if you think he would never have been accepted into the military for whatever reason, I bring you: every serial killer who use to be in the military, however long it was (Jeffery Dahmer most notably), you can literally just look that stuff up (“you didn’t bring examples off the top of your head this doesn’t mean anything” yeah yeah well that’s why I said look it up, because it’ll still be there). And considering I have friends who I know after their military years will definitely not be mentally well, I’m sure the “they wouldn’t accept them” attitude means jack and shit. You just don’t like this theory, that’s all you’re bitching about, but hate to break it to you but it’s just as valid as any other theory because of how little we know of the character in this movie.

You're spot on with everything except him being a Green Beret. Green Berets are usually a bit older because they're training takes so long and because they spend such a long time out in the field. The Joker is still a fairly young guy for a Green Beret with ptsd. Also, Green Berets are the most compassionate of all special operators. They're motto is to free the oppressed. They're main specialty is teaching uneducated freedom fighters how to wage war on war lords. And most telling, Green Berets fingerprints and ids aren't removed from federal data bases. There's no reason for it. I believe The Joker was probably a Ranger, specialists in the things he claimed to love, explosives and bullets. They are also usually very young when they start seeing action. What I believe happened was that he was extremely good at his job and maybe enjoyed it a bit too much. So he was probably recruited by the CIA. The CIA loves to recruit exceptional Rangers. They would've taught him interrogation techniques, espionage, counter terroism tactics, and how to endure torture. The CIA would also have removed all of his fingerprints, ID, and other records from all data bases. As is their standard operating procedure with spooks. He was probably on a mission that went south, resulting in his scars, probably from being tortured, and the CIA just cut him loose. Abandoning him to his fate and disavowing all knowledge of him. He eventually escapes and returns broken, with a new desire to watch the world that abandoned him burn.
