▸ HEL is an old Kashubian port city. It is also a famous summer resort located at the end of the Hel Peninsula, or rather, as the local residents say at the beginning of Poland. It is a charming place with the atmosphere of a small fishing town. Hel, until recently a large military base, is slowly regaining its tourist character. A large beautiful beach located on the Hel headland attracts many tourists to its sandy base. Hel is also a lot of interesting places. In Hel there is a Fisheries Museum with an interesting exhibition describing fishermen and their profession. The Hel Sealarium, i.e. the Sea Station of the University of Gdańsk, looks after the Baltic seals, but is also happy to educate everyone who wants to visit them. The Coastal Defense Museum was established on the site of the largest of Hel's 406 mm cannons, known as "Schleswig Holstein". In the museum exhibitions, we will see the enormity of Hel fortifications. The lighthouse with its surroundings is also an undoubted attraction. Climbing to the top of the lighthouse will reward you with a picturesque view stretching from its top to the sea, the Hel Peninsula, and for those with a keen eye, the buildings of the Tri-City.
The main attraction of Hel is, of course, the beach in Hel, as probably every seaside beach. Thanks to its unique location, Hel boasts two beautiful beaches. One is located by the open sea, mostly on the Hel Cape, known as the Big Beach, and the one from the Bay of Gdańsk - called the Little Beach between the seaport and the military port. Right next to this beach there is the Seal Sanctuary in Hel, which is part of the Marine Station of the Institute of Oceanography of the University of Gdańsk. The main purpose of the seal sanctuary is to restore and protect gray seal colonies in the southern Baltic region. The educational goal is also important, because thanks to a visit to the Hel sealarium, we can learn about the life of Baltic marine mammals. At the beach in the former 15th century church there is the Fisheries Museum in Hel, which presents issues related to the history of the Baltic Sea, fishing in the Gdańsk Bay and the Vistula Lagoon, the history of the Hel Peninsula itself, as well as contemporary problems related to the maritime economy. The front part of the building is crowned with a low, wooden tower that serves as a viewing point. It offers a beautiful panorama of the city, port and beach from the Bay of Puck.
It is not far from here to the port of Hel, which is mainly a fishing port, but is also a yacht port and a stationing place for cruise ships. It is worth taking a walk along the Hel breakwaters to get a closer look at the port. There is an interesting building of Tourist Information in the port area. When leaving the port, it is worth walking along ul. Rural, which is worth paying attention to among the crowds of tourists, to the half-timbered fishermen's houses from the turn of the 18th / 19th century, see an interesting church built in the 1930s.
Apart from the beautiful beach in Hel, there is a lighthouse complex consisting of a 42-meter-high lighthouse built in 1942, a lighthouse keeper's house (mid-nineteenth century), farm buildings (mid-nineteenth century). also the foundation of the first lighthouse from 1820. You can enter the lighthouse to see a charming view of the Gdańsk Bay, the Baltic Sea and the Hel Peninsula from the upper terrace.
Hel is also a former military city with numerous military fortifications. The Coastal Defense Museum in Hel takes care of the fortifications. The seat of the museum is located in the city's most interesting military building - the German artillery battery "Schleswig-Holstein".
