whoever created this animation is highly skilled, i think few people understand just how many very complex parameters had to be created for the frame physics alone thats forgetting the quality of the graphical skin applied over it, incredible video that gives a very clear insight into how the rotor head works

First time ever really looking at a helicopter rotor mechanism. The people who designed this thing must have been absolute geniuses.

Agreed. I even think model rc helicopters are even more complicated in some respects.

Beautiful animation. Explaining further how the rotor system works, there are 3 inputs go to the main rotor. 1) Swashplate to the rotor, 2) Swashplate to the stabilizer bar, and 3) stabilizer to the rotor. The stabilizing aspects of the rotor mainly comes from 3). The stabilizing system is basically a mechanical gyro sensor with aerodynamic damping. Well, since this video was published back in 2012, all radio controlled helicopter manufacturers have moved away from such mechanical stabilizing system and moved to 3-axis electronic gyro system. The two mixers mentioned in the video have all disappeared since then.

I wouldn't go as far to say disappeared, but certainly less common. My 450 is a flybar, albeit I bought it used. However a few companies (Avant comes to mind) still make flybarred helicopters. For how much longer, is anyones guess...
@atomicskull6405
@atomicskull6405 6 лет назад
They still use flybars in industrial machines like the Yamaha Rmax and it's successor the Fazer (which came out in 2016). This is because a flybar is head referenced rather than airframe referenced and because it's completely mechanical there is no control loop delay (in a flybarless system the airframe most move before the sensors detect it, then an appropriate response is calculated and implemented by the servos and then the airframe must move before the sensors detect the change, and this loop repeats). In the case of the Rmax and Fazer, there is an electronic stability system similar to a flybarless controller in *addition* to the flybar. By doing this they get an exceptionally stable platform that has the advantages of both mechanical and electronic stability.

Excellent animated explanation - now if only I could make sense of it...I have one which I have rebuilt almost as many times as I have flown it - but I still do not really know what it is doing. The last time I really tried to figure it out -some thing flew apart inside my head.

Still excellent. These should be used in colleges and aviation schools. This should also be on display at hobby shops as this is a popular entry method of flight control.

Very well done congrat. The only thing I figured out so far are the cyclic commands (tilt forward, back, and both sides) this is done actually 90° before the actual effect is needed to take into account gyroscopic at play. Ex if you want your rotor disk to tilt forward the blae forward should lower it's lift (i.e. reduce it's angle of attack) and the rear one should augment it's lift (raise it's angle of attack) so as to create this forward lift and motion. But actually this action would commanded by the head rotor mechanism when the blades are on the sides because the resulting effect will only be felt 90° later. Pitch mechanism is far easier to grasp.

Unfortunately all parts are moving and the input is not very clear. This makes understanding the Bell rotor hub not very simple as was expected.

The videos of the Sikorsky rotor seem easier to understand and I think the Sikorsky system is simpler. The Bell rotor seems to have way to many moving parts.

Not really. Gyrocopters were made to avoid the pitfalls of a regular airplane that is prone to stalling. In theory a gyrocopter can never stall.

In a real chopper, your life hangs on each of these tiny linkages. If just one comes apart, the whole aircraft goes out of control and you're a gonner. It's scary.

it dose NOT show the effect of the fly bar that makes the video point less the cyclic control is done with the fly bar the fly bar is kind of controlled by the swash plate

Nice video but forgive my ignorance as I am struggling to see what it's for and Google hasn't helped! As I understand it it's some kind of servo mixer that mixes the pilots commands with commands from the teetering mini rotor, is that correct? not seen this on real helicopters so is it used today or mostly in models? what advantages does it have? also does the main rotor seesaw too, because I can't tell and it looks like it doesn't but I thought twin rotors usually do.it all looks really clever and if anyone can explain it or give me a link I would love to see your comments below.

This type of rotor system is rarely used these days since three axis gyros are now used. The flybar system is too stable for rc helicopters that want to fly extreme 3d.

Good animation. But I still can't make out anything. With a conventional swashplate, everything is clear. There's nothing complicated. And here there are so many rods that it is very difficult to disassemble what pulls. Probably I will figure it out only when I myself buy a helicopter with such a scheme.

I wouldnt worry too much. Most (all?) passenger carrying helicopters are flybarless. Model helicopters (like my T-Rex 450 SE) use this flybar style stabilization, though many (most) newer models are also flybar-less.
