Los Angeles is usually a vibrant and congested city, especially on Friday afternoons when rush hour is typically the worst. Due to recent events, things are very different right now in Los Angeles. To see what LA looks like from the air I flew my helicopter on Friday March 20th 2020 from 5PM - 6PM over the following areas.

I grew up flying cubs and champs, sometimes meddle around in warbirds. No rotorcraft hours yet..Working on getting into PPG..just not at the moment due to covid-19. Micah! This was so cool for someone who has never been there! The thing that made this so great was your verbal mapping and labelling where you were flying over. Still too much light pollution though likely. Similar to here in Vegas, Casinos may be closed, but they are still lit up like Christmas trees to the point where astronomy is still impossible.

I lived in the San Diego area in the early 60's. Even that ground traffic was considerable back then. We got tangled up in LA traffic a few times while we were traveling. The level of traffic you just showed is, indeed, unusual. Nice flying, by the way. I have flown fixed wing in real world and helicopter simulator over the San Diego and the East San Diego County area. Even the simulator showed considerable levels of ground traffic.

I was initially surprised at the amount of helipads downtown. In retrospect, I'm not sure why I was surprised.

Michael Jordan for the longest time building downtown were required to have helipads and therefore a flat roof but they lifted the restriction. For example the newer Wilshire Grand Tower has some shape at the top and a spire w/ no helipad

never been in LA, I am surprised that the buildings cover almost the whole lots. In my country even in the city center you have to leave, like 30-50 percent free, you can build higher (8-10 stories) to reach the allowed floor to land area ratio, but do not cover the whole lot.

Down here in the OC, air quality has been fantastic, even considering the rain that we've had. Also, so quiet! I live 1/4 mile from I405 and can always hear traffic, but not this week!

Moonwalker The visibility during this flight was incredible. There’s a small island (San Nicolas) to the Southwest of LA. On clear days I can barely make it out when flying. When I shot this video I could see San Nicolas more clearly than ever.

For a little over 65 years, I have been driving all the LA area freeways (in 1954 the 405 and the 91 were being started or in planning stages) and this video brought back many nostalgic memories of each area flown over but not of the Friday rush hours that got increasingly worse as the years went by.
