Thank you all for being here with us on these watch throughs and thank you for always being a supportive and wonderful community!

@@TroyConvers5000 I'll agree, conditionally, on Homicide (and raise you with Thee Wire (also by David Simmons), the best dawn show I've ever watched in my life), but while DS9 was the best Star Trek had at the time, I don't think that's saying much, since I hold those shows in very high esteem. An opinion disputed by the majority of the fandom, granted, but still one I hold strongly.

@@sergioaccioly5219 I am confused you said it wasn the best Star Trek had at the time, but then say that's not saying much? Because you hold the shows in very high esteem? those things don't work together, that doesn't make sense. Either you mean that's saying a LOT, or that you DON'T hold those shows in high esteem. I genuinely can't tell which, because you next sentence doesn't jibe with anything previously said either. No one really disputes DS9 being the best... but if you don't hold the shows in high esteem(which would make the last sentence work) nothing else makes sense.

Episode 17 of this season is another one that is still very relatable with reality, you'll get it when you watch it. Also, keep notes on which characters you love/hate, and review those later. You'll be surprised on how things change. And one last thing: do a list of which characters you believe are Cylons. I think what makes BSG so good is that it isn’t like Star Trek. People are flawed and are under so much stress but I think the hardest thing is to really grasp the context of their situation. This is all that remains of your race. It’s like in one day the entire population of California was reduced to 30 people. Or LA reduced to 4 people. Or the US was reduced to 300. Planet wide it would be like we have 8000 people left and we have to travel by sea, not allowed to go ashore and we only have one small destroyer to defend against an enemy that is virtually inexhaustible and relentless. People are going to make some pretty harsh decisions. I’m actually surprised that it’s gone as smoothly as it has!

I'm mostly glad that people are giving you advance warnings, although I do slightly worry that the anticipation might just add to the stress / the general spoilery-ness of it. Having an episode-specific warning will absolutely change your experience of watching the episode up to that point. I guess you'll just have to judge for yourselves after you watch one of those episodes whether you want the warnings to continue / what categories of things you might specifically want warnings for. In terms of suggestions regarding 2x10... probably not super late in the day, so that you can plan something fun and low-stress for afterwards (e.g., watching a favorite "comfort" movie in warm jammies while eating your favorite delivery food). And maybe make sure you're as physically comfortable as possible, not cold or hangry etc., nothing that's going to compound with the difficult emotions from the show. Maybe have a stress ball / pillow / something else you can physically release frustration against without destroying anything? And then, yeah, take a break if you decide you need it. (All of this makes it sound like the most disturbing scene ever. It's hard to watch, even more so if your brain is especially good at filling in details that you aren't actually shown, but I've definitely seen worse. That said, I'd much rather that you have options available that you don't need, than need something and not have it.)

Speaking (okay, writing) as a veteran, the military is not as black and white as it gets made out to be. Gaeta ABSOLUTELY knew; most likely he was telling Dee to be a bit more careful, because if he could find out, well... Sure, in a combat situation, when the NC/OIC makes a decision, its made, follow it out. But you'll also notice how Chief pulled Crashdown to the side to tell him "this is frakkin' stupid", even though he was outranked. There are ways (and even "proper ways") around the hard and fast rules that exist in the military. The one thing that bugs me about this episode is that Boomer's last words were, "I love you, chief", but not "I love you, Galen"- like, you'd say their name.
@barreloffun10

@krashd
@krashd Месяц назад
@@barreloffun10 Bit of a silly excuse if you ask me, the scene would have been the perfect time to give him a name. You don't cast a sheep to play a dog in a movie just because you haven't decided what dog breed to get - you simply make the decision which dog to get. That is why showrunners/producers exist, to make decisions, if they mess up a scene just because they can't make a trivial decision then they are not fit to run a show.

Boomer getting shot is similar to Jack Ruby shooting Lee Harvey Oswald (who killed JFK). Another example of "It has happened before, it will happen again". This is a show where trying to ship some couples will break your heart, but also, in a couple of occasions, will reward your emotional investment. Some of the actors you like have had fascinating pre and post BSG lives; the guy Cassy gets into a fight with was on a Canadian teen drama and is now on General Hospital. One way that you two can get through these rough episodes is to take "commercial breaks". Remember, that when this show was produced it was done with space for breaks bult into it. So, after an upsetting scene, take 90sec to 120 sec to just process and feel. Do it on or off camera but just give yourself some recovery time.

Super Easy 3 step plan to survive BSG. This show is a true Drama and it will make you feel all sorts of emotions so every time it does: 1. It's just a show (Paula) 2. Acknowledge how you feel, the emotions the realism, it's familiarity to the real world, current and historical events and the familiarity of people and the human experience that the characters portray. 3. (And this is the key) Commend the writers, actors, the production and every one involved for their craft, skills and ability to create those feelings in comparison to other films, TV and stage shows or many other art forms. The engagement and emotion that you are feeling is a testament to the very best of the entertainment industry. Thank them and look forward with anticipation to see what else they can deliver through your screen.

The sport they are playing is called Pyramid. That's a carryover from the original "Battlestar Galactica" series, which relied a lot of a lot of visual and thematic ... but never fully stated ... links to Ancient Egypt. This version of the show has mostly dispensed with that motif, instead going for a more present-day USA visual style, and some ties to Ancient Greek cultural themes.

Here's the thing. There are a lot of tough episodes in this show. There are a lot of tough moments. But NONE of it is gratuitous. BSG is a drama that explores how people respond to being pushed to their limits by existential crises. Adama asks in the miniseries whether humanity is worthy of survival, and the tests that must be faced to answer that question are often merciless. But there are also moments of hope and grace and joy in BSG, and ultimately the story is inspiring.

On the ichy nose issue: Just tea or warm/hot liquids? Hot chocolate create a similar effect? This show always packs a punch hang in there a lot of this early trauma pays off as the show progresses

The game pyramid was in the original series too.

But in the original series, it was called "Triad". The card game they played (seems like some sort of poker variation, with the hexagonal cards) was called "Pyramid" in the original. I remember thinking it was weird that they'd swapped the names around in the reboot, but on rewatches I now can't find the reference to the card game as triad

Middle of Season 2 is the most intense part of the show thus far. 2x10-2x12 is crazy good though.

Great reaction, both. Especially when you commented that Richard Hatch looked like Apollo, and I shouted, “because he was Apollo” as I think you know. Keep up the great work, and thank you for picking up Lower Decks, you are going to love it. But because you have started watching Decks, you will also have to watch Strange New Worlds…. you will have to watch to find out why ……… Spoilers!!!!

I really don't think I watch TV the same way you folks do... Something like this happens and I'm shocked, but that just made me want to watch more. I had to see what happened next. The emotional response was not nearly as deep. And yet, there are other shows that AREN'T sci-fi that do leave me morose, depressed and not wanting to watch. I think the sci-finess acts as a buffer for me to allow me to disconnect a bit from the content so I can enjoy the twists of the story and such. That's probably why I like Sci-fi so much.

How to get through it? It was easier back then because it wasn’t necessarily bingeable so you had time to process for longer. But also it’s too good to not continue and what it’s talking about is too important and they do it too well. Just alternate it with Lower Decks 🙂

I get an itchy back after drinking diluting juice (that one part drink-five parts water stuff in case it has a different name in the states.. squash?). It's the weirdest thing, an itchy nose makes sense because tea is a herb and your nose is directly over the cup as you drink.. but an itchy spine from drinking squash? Beats me. Fuck! ..I could be a Cylon, next time I drink the scritchy fluid I should ask someone if my spine glows red!

I figure with as many nukes as they showed going off in the attack, that Caprica is always a hazy brown due to all the dirt, ash, and smoke that have filled the atmosphere and will probably take years or even decades to fully settle. I live in New Mexico and the whole sky is this color during sandstorms... or if California is burning. That's just one state on fire. Imagine every continent was burning. Kinda surprised the sky isn't even darker than this. Yeah, life will eventually bounce back(like Kobol?), but only after sweeping mass extinctions that will permanently alter the ecosystem in ways humans might not be capable of surviving. Nuclear Winter is Coming! I love that this show gives us that visually with the overexposed Caprica. This world is toxic now, the great dying is just beginning, and we need to get out of here before it takes us down with it.

You could take a break or do some grounding exercises, mindfulness, afterwards, it looks like talking about it helps too! You could create a destressing ritual after too. You had smiles on your faces at the end and smiling always helps whether we want to believe it or not.

If it wasn't a good show, it couldn't affect you this much. BSG is at its very best when it drops you to your knees and when it stirs your soul. This was the former, and the latter will come in equal measure.
