Helo wasn’t supposed to be in the series. We were just supposed to believe he died when Sharon left him behind on caprica but reaction to him was so positive he was brought into the series as a regular and arguably is one of the best characters in the whole show

Most impressive to me is the writers worked it in, and made it work So Darn Well. Sometimes when changes are made due to reactions, things suffer, because the writer is begrudging any changes to their plot, or completely winging it with no plan anyway. Here, they clearly spent the time to decide, OK, if we do that, how can it work and mesh with everything else.

crazy how that stuff works. like yoda only exists because george lucas thought it would be weird for obiwan to be sitting on the bench while luke was attacking the death star so he killed him off upsetting Alec Guinness who was promissed a bigger role for the 3 movies. and since his character was dead we needed someone alive to train luke. Poe from the newer movies was supposed to die as well but Oscar Isaac being so amazing got them to write in his miracle survival. i imagine this happens in movies and shows a lot more than we realize

It's also good to highlight sometimes that the proclivity to alcohol addiction is genetic. When you come from a family where there are addicts it is more likely that your reaction to alcohol will be similar. Alcohol can make everyone addicted, but some people just get there much faster than others. I personally am blessed with not having that problem, I always know when to stop, way before getting absolutely wasted, I also have no drive to try any other vices like smoking or drugs. I smoked the pipe and cigarillos in my early 20's but I did not stick with it for very long. I had picked a specific kind of tobacco and that went out of production and so instead of switching to a new brand I just stopped smoking. Other friends from my youth started to smoke at 15 and now 30 years later still haven't stopped. It's a type thing.

I don't think that even crossed her mind. She did it because, in the end, she takes her job seriously and follows commands. She may rebel and talk back, but she expects her CO to bring her in line. And when he doesn't---like with the pills---she openly tells him what he has to do as a CO. So, no matter how much she was begging, when the order came, she followed it.

The Original Battlestar Galactica from 1978 was a VERY different show. While it's basic premise was the same, and had plenty of dark moments, it was also very lighthearted and family friendly. There's even a little boy with a robot dog on the show. I would recommend at least watching the original TV movie, which was comparable to the two-part mini-series of the reboot, after you've finished the reboot series.

That ending with the baby being born is one of the scenes that stuck with me even to the end of the series. It felt so nice and relieving to have a little bit of good news, and the fact it was born on a ship named 'Rising Star' is quite prophetic, to use a religious term.

As someone who has never taken a sip of alcohol because of what he's seen it do to his family (plus being born with what we've later investigated to likely have been Fetal Alcohol Syndrome), I completely feel Kat's story. I've often been harassed to "just try it" or "come out drinking with us" or "You don't know you're addicted if you've never taken a drink" etc. At one point, a coworker and employer pushed the above daily and wouldn't listen to me saying no, to where after the umpteenth time I blurted out about the FAS. From then on, it was a running gag, "Don't invite him out or else you'll hear about his FAS" or something to that effect. I know, I know, I could have filed harassment in the workplace charges, but I had bigger issues I was dealing with. Kat, if you decide you need a DS9-fan to react to DS9 with you, I'm willing, lol. But excited to see what may come out of DS9 for you. As for BSG, personally, I couldn't get into the show until Season 2, and then Season 3 dropped out until the last season. It may have been related to personal issues, or something in a particular episode that struck a nerve or something, but I'm pretty sure the two of you will love the series overall. Oh, as for the effects for the Cylons, they really did use the "weaknesses" of that era's computer effects to their advantage. I always love when designers turn weaknesses into strengths.

Although, weirdly, the destruction of the colonies is WAY more violent in the 70's show. No nukes here, just vast amounts of firepower and people running for their lives as their world is destroyed around them. For that matter the destruction of the Atlantia is downright *shocking* with the camera being inside the exploding, collapsing and atmosphere-venting bridge almost right until the end. Doesn't help of course that she's the same design as the Galactica so the audience knows what can happen to our hero ship. Oh and the Cylons explicitly referring to the raiders making suicide attacks on her landing bays as "Atlantia Death Squadron".
@ala5530
@ala5530 5 месяцев назад
In fairness, they apparently got the actors to turn in performances like that, appearing incredibly tired, logey, and sleep deprived by... shooting the scenes when everyone was incredibly tired and sleep deprived. Not 200+ hours awake levels of tired, but apparently around the 50hr mark. I don't know for certain if that's true, but if so I feel sorry for anyone who wasn't expecting the miniseries/pilot to be picked up. That's one hell of a first episode to shoot (and it was literally the first one on the production schedule). Even if it's not true, it has been confirmed that the writers originally thought that someone operating that long on essentially zero sleep (remember, a typical REM cycle is around 45 minutes- you get woken up before then you're not really getting any effective benefit) would be suicidal and/or homicidal, but they consulted with specialists in sleep disorders, and actually listened, adjusting the script and directing to better reflect reality.

Regarding discussion of religion and genocide, keep in mind that 9/11 was still fresh on everyone's mind as this aired. There had also been major terrorist attacks in Bali, India, and Madrid, and the 7/7 attack in London would happen soon after season 1 aired. The writers have noted that if this show had been made before 9/11, it would have been a very different show. Many of the scenes from the miniseries of people first learning of the attack on the colonies were modeled after stories of how specific people learned about the 9/11 attacks. Even in this episode, the picture that the pilots touched while leaving the briefing room was supposed to be their equivalent to the famous picture of the three firefighters with the American flag at ground zero, and the wall Dee saw with all of the pictures was largely copied from the memorial picture boards that sprang up around ground zero, initially in hopes of finding loved ones but soon becoming simple memorials for the dead.

This is going to be an unpopular opinion from someone who adores this show, and is enjoying these reactions. Kat's love for Starbuck is misplaced. The very first thing we saw Kara do in the miniseries was get drunk at a poker game, and sucker punch an old man in the face. Then we learned she's a good pilot, but I don't think that makes you a good person. Then she confessed to Lee that she was responsible for his brother's death, because of her selfish feelings. And that she never told Adama, who has been treating her really well aboard Galactica due to their shared loss. Then at the end of the miniseries, Tigh swallowed his pride and went to her to mend fences and apologize. She callously called him weak because of his addiction, and told him to frak off. Starbuck so far kinda sucks as a human being. Jmho , lemme know if you disagree. Love talking BSG.

One thing I always say to people when they start the show... after you get a decent amount of the way in(like, the halfway point), come back and revisit how you felt about all of the characters at the beginning. Inspiring and affirming story Kat, thank you for sharing - I hope it gives a boost to those dealing with something similar. Twelve Cylon Models = twelve different forms; so Six (the blonde who hasn't gotten a 'human' name) is one, Boomer is another, the reporter guy is a third, and the smuggler from the anchorage is a fourth. We know four of the twelve models at this point. (Sorry if this was explained to death in miniseries comments.) Great reaction!

The 1978 show is worth a watch. It was "not renewed" for a 2nd season because it was too expensive for the network to keep paying for (The pilot miniseries was the most expensive production for TV ever made to that point). They also moved the show around the schedule to less desirable slots in order to try to counter high-rated programs on other channels, but of course then the show's own ratings suffered. It's like 1000% less cynical than the Moore production but it's not bad, just more "family-friendly" (i.e., kid-friendly) with less mature/adult themes and events.

Fun little bit of trivia on this one. If you watch the DVD with audio commentary they mention the original story included panicked civilians on the Olympic Carrier frantically waving in the windows. Even these guys (who showed a baby getting it's neck snapped, a little girl getting nuked on the agricultural ship and the bulk of humanity getting wiped out) thought, "OK... we better dial this back a bit."
@ala5530
@ala5530 5 месяцев назад
Even without that, there's a hint of movement through the windows in one of the shots, almost a blink-and-miss-it. They deliberately don't show anything in particular, but I'd swear (and it was mentioned in an interview that they were considering, as an alternative to the panicked civilians, or in addition to them) it's a reflection off a cylon centurion. It might be a VFX artefact, it might be a shot they failed to remove test footage of the originally planned sequence, but I'd swear it's there.

I'm enjoying your reactions so far... BTW, Kat, I was fortunate enough to spend time with both Katee and Tricia (who met on BSG and remain BFFs) at some charity events for the Humane Society and they are both as wonderful as you would hope they are. The original BSG was really just a way for the TV network ABC to try to grab onto the popularity of Star Wars - the creator of the show is Glen Larson, who was Mormon, so the general plot of a tribe of humans being displaced and going on a journey to find a new home comes from Mormon scripture, but the creators of this new version realized that the plot was perfect as a metaphor for the events of Sept 11th. So, yes, it's dark.
@mooncaketin
@mooncaketin 5 месяцев назад
Just as an addendum to answer Kat's question about if the original BSG was as dark as the new one: as @Timmayytoo said, the original was an attempt to cash in on the Star Wars craze, so IIRC it aired on Sundays at 7pm, when families could watch it. It also had action figures and toy vehicles marketed to kids.

From the wiki: Moore explained on his blog that the number 33 had no hidden meaning or significance, only that he felt it sufficiently long to allow minor functions like snacking, showering, or cat napping, but was too short to allow anybody to gain any meaningful sleep and recharge their batteries. Further, Moore intentionally gave the number no meaning to avoid creating and inserting unnecessary technobabble into a drama-driven episode.

The effects are pretty good(if repetitive) as they were done by Dykstra, the same guy who worked on Star Wars. The series had some cheesy moments, but the pilot is pretty straight and you will see all the bones of this modern Series present.

Kat, I am so happy you are open about it and willing to talk about it, aside from being grateful to hear about your struggle, I feel a kinship for another person who abstains from alcohol. I was never addicted, but when I was 17, and all my friends were getting drunk "for the fun of it" I recognized very quickly that I am too prone to depression to do the same.. the number of nights I had to take care of my friends while she was sobbing drunkenly on the floor just made me absolutely disgusted with the prospect of drinking alcohol, and the more I refrained from it, the better I felt - and the worse my friends treated my for it. I eventually dropped out of contact with them altogether, but I still have to to struggle while making new friends - because when we reach the subject of "what do we do Friday night" it's always a bar, or a drink that they think of, while I quietly pull away..

Kat, it’s amazing and inspiring how open you are about addiction. I wish I’d realised in my 20’s how destructive alcohol is. Unfortunately it took me until my 50’s and after 30 months sober I’m currently in relapse. The best advice I’ve had is “don’t stop stopping” and I know I’ll stop again soon. I love the reaction videos from both of you and re-found my love of sci-fi, especially Red Dwarf 🤟🏻

Actually, we didn't have to wait a week after this one as it originally aired. The first two episodes, "33" and "Water" aired back-to-back on the same night. They would later do the same thing with "Occupation" and "Precipice", the first two episodes of season 3. But waiting a week is no big deal. Season ending cliffhangers were already common as this aired, and season 2-4 (with 20 episodes each, unlike the 13 episode season 1) each had mid-seasan breaks as well, with cliffhanger endings.

This episode is one of my favorites in the series. The performances are amazing and you can feel everyone's fatigue. The best way to watch this one is right after the miniseries, carrying the tension and emotion of the miniseries with the fatigue of 33 then take a break( or sleep) and get ready for more.

I remember when this 1st aired, I watched it with my dad. When this episode ended I took a big sigh of releif, looked at my dad, and said "Do you feel really tired after watching that, too?" We both agreed watching this one hour of tv felt like an endurance test, but that this was already, after only one episode one of our new favorite shows to watch together. If memory serves me correctly, they showed the next episode right after this one.

Most reaction channels I watch/follow watch two episodes per video. It makes it feel like you're not just getting into the meat of the show and suddenly is over again. Gives the reaction more traction. The episodes do fly by... but they didn't back then. Sometimes more than a year between seasons. My daughter used to (and might still.. she's out there adulting these days) blast the soundtrack almost daily. Bear became the rhythm of life in this house for a good decade. I was a psych major in college during most of this airing.... and was seriously considering minoring in religious studies, thinking if could make me a better therapist. One doesn't have to be a believer to have faith, and for many, faith is paramount for healing and self reflection. The dichotomy of a pagan society, with 12 gods (12 zodiac signs, 12 months, 12 Apostles), and an "opposing" monotheistic religion (with 12 copies) with a singular god was/is absolutely fascinating. This show had some badass, experienced writers! I wrote MANY argumentative thesis papers with this show as a backdrop.... to the point that my teachers got sucked in and became fans.

You might not be able to make him out in this episode, but Boomer's new copilot, CashDown, is played by Sam Witwer who voiced Darth Maul in Star Wars: The Clone Wars among other things. This is one of his early TV roles.

Kinda cool how the cylons turning up every 33 mins mirrors how our most primitive ancestors would hunt by using our adaptation to stamina to just persistently run down prey to the point of exhaustion.

Glad you mentioned Black Sails - my favorite series of all time. It's a rated R prequel to Treasure Island and an absolute Masterpiece of writing and cinematography from beginning to end...and boy does it nail the landing. WOW! Please, react to it! It's a tightly woven 4 seasons with only 38 episodes.

I remember watching this the week it came out and there were plenty of live discussions IRL about at what point you shoot down a passenger airplane if it changes flight plan and drops comms. A lot of the moral questions this show posed haven’t lost a jot of their potency, but for it to have the courage to raise them in the midst of post-9/11 paranoia and securitisation was singular.

The film Blade Runner was a big influence on this this series. It’s definitely worth watching(I recommend “The Final Cut” edition), and wouldn’t negatively affect your viewing of the show.

20:05 *All* the armies in WW2 were taking stimulants. Mostly amphetamines and substituted amphetamines, like meth. In fact, the USAF only stopped using amphetmine as a "go-pill" following a 2002 blue-on-blue incident with Canadian infantry in Afghanistan

And let's not forget the British army is so reliant on them they designed special boiling vessels for their armoured vehicles to ensure a ready supply. They even installed a backup generator so that they could be run without main engine power along with such minor considerations as the radio. Hmm? Well, yes, if you want to be picky boiling vessel is a fancy name for a kettle and the stimulant is tea but it still counts!

So, 13 months passed between Mini-Series and Series in the U.S. on SyFy. The Brits didn't have to wait that long. They got to see it in the Fall of 2004 as it was mostly Sky Network's pounds that backed the show.....cause Brits love good Si-Fi!. And it was filmed in the 21st Century Si-Fi capitol, Vancouver, Canada :) And it will always be referenced in a 'blink' and you'll miss it line, but after Ep. 1 the survivor count stands at 49,998 (including the newborn)....So Say We All
@matthewbaur6875
@matthewbaur6875 5 месяцев назад
49,998 is the revised count at the very beginning of the episode. They lose 681 to other causes, and then another 1,345 from the Olympic Carrier, making the count 47,972 before they find out about the baby, who makes the final tally at the end of the episode 47,973.

Hey Gals, fantastic reaction to this episode. I can only wait with anticipation for your response going forward. I am an original followers of the original show and I gotta tell you gals it took about 5 episodes for me to appecept all the character changes they made to the show, I was not a fan. But now fracking love the reboot show, and it for this reason that I really suggest the you watch the original movie NOW and not later as there is a link between the original and the new coming up that I'd love if you were onload with before it happens, also gals Battlestar in 1978 was a huge success striking off the back of star wars and there is a second series it was called something different GALACTICA 1980 it was any good as if features the offspring of two of the main original characters. But really watch the original movie now just so you can get to grips with the original characters, and also, the original movie had some really big name stars of the time.

The main difference between the original series and the reimagined series is that in the original the Cylons where created by an ancient reptilian race that they wiped out. When they discovered humans they tried to wipe them out as well. In this series the Cylons were created by humans. There were no human looking models in the original series. The main practical difference in the mechanical Cylons is that in 2003 they were CGI and much more dangerous looking. In the original series the Cylons were people wearing cardboard costumes covered in aluminum foil. An interesting trivia fact is that in the 2003 mini series the colonial officer at the armistice station was looking at a drawing of what the Cylons looked like in 1978.
