Your so right, I can't stomach the "new Helmet" due to the inability of the replacement drummers to even begin to replicate Staniers work.Helmet is not even half as good without him,and Henry as well, was really a chemistry thing musically between John,Henry and Page.None of them having a "true" hard rock background is what made the 3 so innovative. "thrist I had at last"
@Malpractice2003 I've always thought it was a song about scoring a drug fix. Street Crab being being the drug dealer pusher that "infects the water" meaning he is unavoidable. The first paragraph describes someone needing a fix. "Thirst I had at last, run the water". The second paragraph reads like someone who's gotten their fix" Safe and sound, like the perfect food" Then it later goes on to describe the street crab in a unipersonal light : "Every street crab will push the Vowels the same
“The ‘"street crabs’ were the guys who were selling the fake Rolexes. They’d be out on the street with their merchandise, and then there’d be one guy sitting on top of a mailbox or something, looking for cops. When a cop came by, he’d yell and they’d all roll up their blankets and run down the street. Being from a small town in Oregon and then settling in New York, I just thought it was a really interesting cultural thing. Like, "This is something I’ve never seen before!” - Page Hamilton
Another one of those vids you just can't get enough of.Every aspect of this song rules, best song off Betty, which also happens to probably be my fav. Helmet album, hell album for that matter.Pure masterpiece, this song just so comes together, and the footage shows it.Great lyrics,F**King incredible riff, insane bassline,Drums are a clinic, accept you can't teach to hit that hard. This really showcases Pages vision of rock,as did most of Betty. The modesty of Helmet just exemplified its supremeness.
Read this in Rolling Stone waaaay back in the day, they did an interview with Page, came to this video and and saw all these cats commenting about the meaning of the song and what were the 'street crabs', I couldn't find the mag that had the damn interview in it(lost it in my collection of old magazines somewhere, shit it's been years!), found the quote online, the Internet is useful at times! “The ‘"street crabs’ were the guys who were selling the fake Rolexes. Was the best live I ever seen. Best sound, best setup, best lineup, best Stoner Band ever. 1995. Saw them in the middle of 2000's, sadly not the same sound, poor one.
Could someone tell me: what the lyric's about? Who are the Street Crabs? I'm asking because i love this fucking song! ONE OF BEST SONGS OF THE MANKIND HYSTORY!
I haven’t seen the part of the video you guys are mentioning, but the concept of “hesitant fucker” in and of itself, is the sequel to street crab, for helmet

@bcastine1975 Oh yeah! It's makes a lot of sense, because Page was passing through some drug issues at that time...and your teory is more acceptable. The funny thing is that music makes me feel good, i think it's a very positive and "good-feeling" sound, i don't know...But yeah, i agree with your explanation!
This is indeed f**king awesome. I saw Helmet perform this song live once during their sound check, but it was without vocals. And no one was stage diving. BTW there's a live version of Street Crab on the Metallurgy compilation
I'll never forget how crushing it was the 1st time I saw the almighty Helmet opening for Rollins in '94 and they opened with Street Crab! They sounded fucking HUGE!!!

@Malpractice2003 I think the key line in the song is when he sings: "I'm not making sense/Just ignore me". I don't think Page places a lot of importance on the meaning of the the lyrics. Whatever meaning you take from the lyrics is worth a lot more than whatever he could want you to hear.
man, i really dont think you could be more wrong. the lyrics certainly do have some extreme vague points for the perceptive person to insert their own circumstance or feeling, but he certainly wrote with a purpose. look up the lyrics to wilmas rainbow, and tell me that isnt how you figure every man child cunt in highschool felt, if you werent one, like me.
