Do you have birds or critters in your dryer vent? Learn how to safely remove them and prevent them from ever coming back, all for just a $6 repair. This is a simple DIY project that anyone can do.
#birds #dryervent #diy
Don't have access to a leaf blower? 1) Try using a shop vac or, if you have to, a regular vacuum. 2) Gather up the flexible duct hose and toss it. Putting a new hose in costs about $8. With the old hose gone completely, it should be much easier to push anything out that is in or near the exhaust portion. Plus, sometimes it's easier just to start fresh.

The $6 cover shown in this video is considered a fire hazard if installed on the dryer vent in some states so please check the fire code that applies to you.

Just FYI, iirc code says any kind of cover is not allowed on dryer vents and the vent must have 12 square inches of opening. So a typical 3x5 vent would be in spec.

@shaijuphilips

I'm not sure how dumb a question this is. Is there a possibility of the bird entering the dryer through the dryer vent? I had a bird in my dryer vent, but it almost seemed like it was in the dryer itself. I made some loud noises and turned on the 'air fluff' feature on my dryer, which ran for 20 mins. Now I'm not sure if the bird flew away or it got trapped inside the dryer. Worried

I have birds with a nest in an old exhaust area that is no longer used but was stupidly still open to the outside by prev owner. Do I cannot push them out since there is no inside opening. But I can hear them fluttering around. So HOW DO I FLUSH THEM OUT FROM THE OUTSIDE OPENING?

Wow we had the same issue when we went away for a month.. when we were back, I started hearing some strange noise.. later when I observed from outside, it was sparrows building nest. It was quite big nest.. Our dryer is in the 3rd level. Cleaning was a bit hard.. We hired handyman to put a cover outside…

I had field mice in our dryer vent. I put a square of wire mesh over the outside cover. Once a month or so I have to clean lint off the mesh. Problem solved for about 10 cents.

I actually bought wire mesh ($2) and was going to do that but the idea of cleaning it out once a month drove me away from this idea. I'm way too lazy :)

There are eggs in mine and I stopped because I felt bad. And the mommy bird is waiting in the tree to go back inside. After two days it was filled with nest again. I guess they like hot air.

Just posted it. I bought mine at Lowe's but the one on Amazon doesn't come with the screen. Technically you should't need it because of how the backdraft flap is built but that's up to you.

I have been having a similar problem. However my washer and dryer are one the top floor. I have no way of reaching it from the outside of my home to attach any cage. Any tips on what I should do?
@LRN2DIY
@LRN2DIY 3 года назад
I would see if you could put a small screen in the end of the hose near the wall from your laundry room. It might have to be a bit hacky but if it works then that’s something. Ideally either you or someone else would be able to access that outer area with ladders/scaffolding but if course you work with what you’ve got.

Hire a professional to clean the vent line. There really is no other resolution. Have the pro clean the dryer also. You'll be amazed at how much lint build up in inside a dryer. Screens, critter cages, etc., all trap lint and cause blockages, which is probably your problem now. Screens and such are often a code violation and fire hazard.

The nest I found in my old home oh boy! I didn't notice until it smelled like birds in my dryer. My laundry room was located on 2nd floor. I used a shop vac and a leaf blower. The exit was located on deck. Was fortunate that entire nest with 3 alive birds barely have feathers all intact. Momma never returned to retrieve nest full of babies.

Wouldn’t want any critters entering the house when you disconnect from inside. If any are there, simply suck them out with shop vac from outside.
