HELP! I've damaged the crankshaft threads rebuilding a 96 Seadoo GTX engine.

I rebuilt the engine and was on the last steps of getting the engine ready to go back into the ski, but I discovered that I damaged the crankshaft threads. I'm looking for a solution.

Can you take a fine diamond needle file and clean up the threads. Just enough to get the die started? I would also get it so the nut threaded a bit so you can then get the die started. As a last resort, file or sand the first couple of threads that are jacked up so you can then get the nut on. The first few threads on the crank aren't what count, its the last few if you know what I mean. Good luck.

Thanks Alan. I tried the diamond files, but maybe mine were not needle files...I don't know. The file seemed to make it worse by altering the good thread next to the bad. I also tried my little rotary tool, but it was doing the same thing as the diamond file.

I've had this happen. It's normally just the outer couple threads. I use a carbide in the dremel to thin down the mushroomed edge. At the same time I add just a little bevel to the snout. Usually the nut will just thread right back on without even chasing the threads.

I tried my cheap little dremel rotary tool, but I couldn't control it well enough to keep it off of the good threads.

Or a sanding block

Take it by Fletcher's motorcycle off of airways he can probably straighten those threads out. Or Sandy's automotive off of stateline road.

Are these shops you trust?

@@papadonjetski9535 Fletcher is a good motorcycle mechanic and machinist. Been knowing him for years. Sandy's automotive is a good shop as well. They have worked on stuff for me a lot. I would try Fetchers motorcycle shop first

The die is tapered on one side. Use that to start from.

Thanks. It is coming, but I'm not very happy with it. My Gopro kept turning off on its own and the video as a whole was sooooo long that I had to do a lot of editing. Normally I try not to edit so much.

Don can you take a grinder and remove the damaged material

I tried diamond files and a rotary tool and I just seemed to causing additional damage. At this point I'm afraid of using a grinder because even the small rotary tool was hard to control.

I agree with what you are going to try. I wouldnt worry about the hex die further damaging the threads. Be nice if you had the tool to hold the die?

I had to drive 50 minutes just to find a machine shop that could bore 2 strokes, but thread repair should be simpler however they may want you to pull the crank out.

I just don't see myself taking this engine apart again and starting over. If it comes down to that being my only choice I'll do it, but I'm going to try everything else first.

I would try what you are about to do. I would also reach out to ericksons machine and performance via his youtube channel or email and put that question to him. He has to have run into this problem over the years.
