I ended up with a number of old 2 stroke jet skis, either by purchase or gifts, only to find out jet ski shops do not want to work on old skis. That reality has driven me into a world of trial and error learning with these watercraft. So, my content is basically video of my step by step process of learning how to disassemble and repair or rebuild engines. I use my videos personally as a blue print to put these engines back together and to help others possibly facing the same issues.
😢 I have a 1998 GTS 717 seadoo, bought new. Does the oil injector move with the throttle. What makes the injector move. I just installed carb & cables. The throttle operates great however the injector is not spring loaded & doesn’t move with the throttle cable. Does it move only when the engine is running? Thanks.
Looking to get into jet ski (a pair) with limited funds. Would have loved to buy a couple for my family. I'm new to jetski ownership - so you're channel is great source of information.
Are you sure it's not the good old seadoo pump rattle! 😂 You can rent that tool why buy it your only gonna use 2 times max. Good information anyway thanks.
@jaye68313 100% sure it wasn't the pump rattle. I think you can hear the pump rattle in the video. I have put off buying one for a long time, but I have 6 skis so I'm gonna need it .
Hi, since you know a lot about these two strokes, I have a 97 gtx. It just randomly shuts off. Like I loose all power. Pull the key and plug it back in and starts up. Any ideas? Thanks!
What are the best years as far as reliability for the older Sea Doo's? Like 1997 ish? I had a new 97, the top of the line model in like a forest green. I'm looking to get back into these but hear the DFI can be a nightmare from early 2000 model years? Anyway, what are some good years for the older 3 seater Sea Doo and Yamaha's? Thank you!
I think the scuffing on the piston sides might be due to not being warmed up fully before high speed use. Not sure though. "Cold seizure" it may be called? Doesn't look nearly as bad as some I've seen. 2 Strokes are very temperature sensitive. Usually on the exhaust side of the piston if it cold seizure. Hot expanding piston and a cold water-bathed cylinder. I may not be correct on this. Just something I heard about in places with colder water.
Hey mann, got one of these and chasing down a no spark issue. Think ive narrowed it down to the CDI after testing the ignition coil and the pick up coil (both ohm reading within spec.) Is there any other way yoy can recommend testing the CDI. Overall what caused the issue is the single wire coming out of the electrical box in the back was placed on the positive post on the battery instead of the negative. Thanks in advance
I have a 97 polaris sl 700 dlx. It cranks but no spark. Having a hard time finding any information on forums or anywhere that can help. Any ideas that could help me?
Well, I believe I have the same model Polaris sitting in my backyard. They are known for electrical problems. Your problem is the Stator or CDI box. There is an updated CDI box you may be able to find, but I think you have to replace other electrical parts for it to work. They are not cheap! Is there a number written on your box? If it is 447 or a number that ends in 447, then I believe you have the original, non updated CDI. I didn't try and fix mine because I didn't want to put that much money into it.
@papadonjetski9535 is there an easy way to check the stator/cdi to rule it out? With a multimeter? Having a hard time finding info on this. It's a super clean new looking ski that's been garaged by previous owner since 2000, so I don't really wanna let it end up as parts/scrap
Don can you make a video on the electrical of this ski? I have a 97 but has the 787 engine. I’ve seen your other videos only different mpem check. I’m lost on this one.
Can you be more specific? Does your ski crank over when you press the start button? Does it have spark? That 97 XP that I took the engine from had no spark. I figure it was a bad ground wire or stator because I believe the MPEM is good.
Hello, Your crankshaft appears to be fine, the other commenters are correct. Lateral play doesn't matter, ANY vertical play in that bearing (and I absolutely mean ANY), send the crank out to get rebuilt. The reason the lateral play doesn't matter is once the cylinder is on, the piston can only move vertically, which takes the lateral play out of the equation. Really enjoy your videos.
As far as starting right up, it fixed it. I haven't had it on the water yet because I've got a vibration going on. Either my engine alignment is a little off or I have a pump issue now. I haven't had time to get back to that ski yet.
Grease your wheel bearings. I slacked on it and saw my wheel rolling beside me on the highway. Luckily it only cost me an axle and some time along with a long wait for a tow since I could weld it myself.
I use 1/4 tubing on a syringe to suck it out from the SP holes. I do have to put the plugs back in and turn the engine over until it starts to hydro lock then remove the plugs and clear the cylinders. I do it maybe 10 times. About to do it today to get ready for Memorial Day.

I just bought two and they big down they have ran right but I can’t turn the choke all the way on that’s when they die but they go.about 3 miles an hour. What’s wrong
Well, it could be several things, but the first thing to do, if you haven't already, is clean or rebuild the carbs and replace the fuel lines. If they have set up for any length of time it gums up the carbs and restricts the fuel flow.
Who Don you ever dealt with a speedster twin 717 with a faulty MPEM keep blowing the 5amp fuse.and now more asseseries and not working blower dds starter.I read somewhere you could replace the diodes under the epoxy any one on the channel know about this? Thanks Don great service video's 👍 love it
I have not dealt with a twin 717 MPEM, but I did blow the MPEM on my 1998 Seadoo GTS with a 717 engine. I have a "No Start" video in which I replaced the e-box and wiring harness. My 5 amp fuse would blow when I connected the battery. I have not done the diode replacement, but I have watched at least one or two videos where it was done.
