Henk Poort - Vincent | Beste Zangers 2019 Reaction! 

Funny to see the Dutch 'translation' of an originally English language song, translated more or less literally back to English in the subtitles. The Dutch text was written by the late, great Martine Bijl, who was a great performer herself, but truely excelled at rewording/translating foreign language texts to beautiful Dutch.

Cudo's to Martine Bijl for translating the song in this way. She could sing as well by the way (and a lot more, like acting, presenting, everything).

The Dutch translation is so poetic ... Don McClean's original is timeless of course, but I love the sheer poetry that the Dutch translation brings to the song.

I saw Henk Poort sing this live, he was sitting right in front of me and I cried my heart out. One of my favorite songs, ofcourse in English too and that week my husband was hospitalized because of leukemia, so I was there alone, missing him like crazy. It felt like Henk sang it for me alone, he kept looking at me, probably wondering why I was crying so hard.

Vincent Van Gogh was a Dutch painter so it is very befitting that this in in Dutch, translated by (the late) Martine Bijl into pure poetry. Absolutely breathtaking! Original of Vincent is Starry starry night by Don McClean.

Omg, Martine Bijl was really the best translating poet we have ever had! And what a beautiful soulful singer and whitty woman as well! This redition of Henk Poort magical as ever! when they recorded the show ( on Ibiza ) the woman who made te text ( the dutch text ) Martine Bijl was sick ,but in the week befor they aired the show she past away so in a way this also became a little bit of a tribute to her , she was a tv host and also a brilliant songwriter ( as you can hear in this song ) and a theather maker ,

I love one specific English version (request is on its way 😊), but I really enjoyed this Dutch version. Some mean neighbour must have started cutting onions the first time I heard Henk singing it. 😢

They are also intrigued because the story is about one of our national heroes. Vincent van Gogh was one of the best painters we had and has a museum in Amsterdam with only his work.

The translation is by Martine Bijl. She was beautiful, funny, did loads of translations, just a beautiful person. Sadly she had a stroke in 2015 and after a few years sufferering and being depressed she finally died in 2019. But she left her beautiful translations and this is one. Lot of people don't know she was an amazing guitar player.

Henk's voice is so soothing, and this sounds excellent in Dutch. Very different lyrics, but totally beautiful. Much prefer it to the original actually. BZ strikes again.

I grew up with this song. The album American Pie was once of first albums a ever bought. I played the guitar since I was 12. I learned to play Vincent from Don McLean when I was about 15. Over time I got better at playing guitar and my progression to me was measured by the way I improved my Vincent. Up until today, now that I’m 60, it’s the song that keeps coming to me whenever I pick up my acoustic guitar. It’s so beautiful!!!

The tour that Henk mentioned was interrupted by Covid, but luckily he's picking it up again. In November I hope to see him in a beautiful venue in Amsterdam (Carré), together with his special guest on that evening: Floor Jansen. Henk was Floor's special guest during her tour in January 2020 (and will be in September when she picks up her interrupted solo tour) and in November she will be his special guest on 2 shows. And hopefully Henk will join Nightwish in Amsterdam in November as well to sing the Phantom with Floor.....

Give this man a book and some guitar strings and he can sing a book for us all........

First time I heard this melody was by Julio Iglesias, Starry Starry Night 🙂, about 40 years ago.

I love Vincen Van Gough paintings. That’s what intrigued me to watch this. I have never heard of this performer before. There is a lot of deep feelings and beautiful voice. It’s soo good! 💜

In the past I have never really listened to the lyrics of songs that much, but listening to reactions I have been doing that a lot more and in doing that been appreciating songs so much more. Great song and reaction this was again.

The best thing is that the english was translated to dutch and then back to english and completely different than the original song but with the same meaning/intention.

It's the briljant Dutch translation, it's I think almost better than the original because Vincent was a Dutch painter and then Henks voice singing... Martine Bijl is so missed by all of us.

Someone need to make a translation of Boudewijn de groot - meneer de president. Such a relevant song, even 50 years after date.

I already wrote it but after this season I had a crush on Henk 😊 his voice is so beautiful and this song, original from Don Mclean is so beautiful. About one of the greatest painters of time. Beautiful lyrics. ❤

He is also singing about Vincents paintings, thats why everybody is quilt, seeing the paintings in their mind

For me, this is pure relaxation music. I can hear something like that in the evening to come down. But I prefer Henk even more in a language I understand. "Sommernacht" I understood 😁

A'dam loves NY and loves Don McLean. Henk honors them both. The most important relationship you can have in life is the mental relationship first and then the emotional relationship. The music I like depends on the mood I'm in. With some exceptions like this number. You can never get enough of listening to this . Poetry and emotion.
