If virtually no clubs are making a profit, that means the players are being paid too much. They are the principle cost to the club. It's a simple calculation. Just because it's pro and matches are shown on tv doesn't mean it's a sport that's popular enough to command high salaries. The exception is France where most Top 14 clubs lose money but their industrialist owners are happy to plough money into a bottomless pit because it buys them political favours from the city mayor and regional government. They get their investment back elsewhere.
